Hardware & Technical Am I the only one unimpressed with Oculus DK2?

Low res true. A real shock at first, but I'm not going back even while I cannot use it in anger due to AMD SSE4.1 lack of update from FD.

Am I the only one who feels this way????

You're not - entirely - alone. I tried it, and I think the sense of immersion is absolutely amazing. It's much better than the TrackIR I normally use. Unfortunately, the low resolution and general blurriness is not as impressive. It's near impossible to read text, unless it's in the middle of the screen and you hold your head very still, and you can't make out any fine detail. I won't be getting one, at least not this generation :).

So how many of those people agreeing with the OP or saying that ED tracker does a better job have tried or, even better, own a DK2?

Simple fact is it is not for everyone but, for me, there is no going back. ED and LFS just make sims on an ordinary monitor obsolete to the point that I will not play iRacing or any other sim until DK2 support is added

and full support coming to iRacing in the near future too.

I bought a Forte VFX-1 over a decade ago and swore I wouldn't touch another HMD until the resolution improved to the point where you can't see lines and/or pixels. Sony very recently commented on how 2K screens will be wasted on smartphones due to battery efficiency issues, why not then target HMD developers. Heaven knows I have been praying for a device that offers high resolution and low enough latency that I forget I'm wearing gear at all, but even current day HMD's still do not impress me enough to try them.

Having tried one, it's a nice piece of technology, a step in the right direction, and it's promising... but it'll have to do a whole lot better than that to meet expectations.

I wouldn't say it leaves me "unimpressed" either, but then I certainly agree with your arguments, there's a whole lot of room for improvement.

I sat my wife down and put the DK2 on her head. She looked around the cockpit and said "Well, I guess it's a nice cockpit to look around, but ..." *shrug*

Then I put her hands on the throttle and stick, and told her to push the throttle forward...

She went "SQUEEEEE!" - and said it was loads of fun.

That's pretty much the reaction I had when I first tried the DK1 on Eve Valkyrie - as soon as the action started, all the problems vanished.

Now, one of the problems in my mind is that a lot of Elite consists of looking at walls of text to determine what to buy or sell, and the DK2 isn't great for this, but for dogfighting, I absolutely love it.

Yep, better support needed. A hotkey to change to 2d monitor view would be a start.

As you say, perfect for dogfighting. Dog fighting with triple is lame by comparison even with Track iR.

I have tried it out for a reasonable length of time. I decided that it was an awesome product which I would like to own, but would rather wait for one with better resolution.

How does that sound?

Me too. When it actually has graphics equal to its promis Ill pay up for it too.

I find it quite unimpressive as well due to the bad resolution.

Can't wait to try Sony's VR tho.

are you serious? The CV1 will be higher res than the Morpheus.

Morpheus is confirmed at 1080p 60hz.

the DK2 is already 1080p 75hz, so in most ways already beats it.

sure, pentile display lowers the effective resolution a little but this is a dev kit.

Oculus could not have been clearer... unless you are a dev and want to use DK2 to start to make code (which DK2 is more than fine for) DO NOT BUY A DK2.

sure... many of us completly ignored him (I did) and went and got one anyway, but, FGS dont judge and complain that it is not up to snuff yet.

Oculus /KNOW it isnt. that is why it isnt CV1.

To be honest Oculus has been pretty much guilty of doublespeak.

They say that it is a prototype dev-kit and it is for developers only yet if they really wanted to limit to developers they could have at least some form of check or validation rather than just selling it.

It seems that they think that they can get around getting CE and FCC certifications and by not offering any support or returns by labelling it as a dev kit.

I wonder if next year we shall see the Dev Kit Mark 3 with all the same caveats while they are still working on the consumer version.

suckers

Well here we have the truth on this steaming pile of nerdgasm, I myself use a Sony HMZ T2, which some fanboys got quite upset about the other day when I taunted their oculi, I can read text clearly, shoot at ships at distance clearly and all in 3d yes, with a track ir as I suspected my experience with the HMZ T2 is far superior to the rift in it's current state..

Anyway I digress from the reason I made this post, I had the cheek to claim that VR and the oculus may be a fad, because simply wearing something on your head is a pain I just cant be bothered with to play a casual game.

Anyway I digress once more here are the facts and why I entitled my post "Suckers".

Look how much the so called "DK1" changed from the "DK2" in such a relatively small space of time from using a gyroscope to using an ir solution combined, this means that anybody who bought a DK1 now has learned nothing about developing because the product has completely changed.

Nobody can tell me that oculus did not already know about ir tracking when making DK1, they just didn't include it because they wanted you all to wait and buy another set DK2, and so I predict a pattern will emerge from this, anybody buying DK2 for actual development is going to have a hard time migrating their newly aquired "skillz" to the "DK3" or final product because I think oculus will release umpteen DK's all with different hardware and never release a full version.
The DK2 is basically a track ir with a samsung phone screen and some lenses lets be honest.

Also I have seen the DK2 on ebay for like £500-£600, what's that all about ?they only retail from oculus at about £250

So here is the upshot of my rant
oculus are stringing you all along, they know what they need to do the job and they simply havent made it because it will cost too much money, they need twin oled's at least for proper stereo 3d with zero ghosting like the HMZ has, and oled's ain't cheap, just watch the consumer oculus will cost about £700 that's if they ever make it.

"oculus are stringing you all along" - Yes of course they are Mr Sony HMZ.

Putting developer kits into developers hands, so that they can create content for VR is really 'stringing people' along as you put it.

Oculus are changing the face of a platform that was heavily scrutinized by a lot of people, because expectations where high and not being met by many other crappy HMZ's on the market.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Honestly..

It was obvious that we weren't developers just by the numbers that were sold. I'm really glad they didn't do any checks to ensure they only ended up in developers' hands. That would've meant I didn't get one.

It is a shame for those people who weren't in a position to try it before they bought it. More resolution would be nice. I have to get myself a decent graphics card that gives me the opportunity to oversample.

I used a DK2 at Fantasticon, I was also unimpressed by the resolution.

Things will undoubtedly improve.

Hello! 2014 paging TheDoctor. This is the time of App Store, Steam and Kick Starter. Not all of it is great but development is not just for corporates anymore. Plenty of people doing good stuff by themselves. You can't possibly validate if someone is a developer effectively. Do you think Microsoft will turn me away if I want to buy some developer tools? No and why should they. Everyone who chooses to buy the DK2 knows what those initials stand for.

I took delivery yesterday and after a lot of fiddling have it working in E: D.

Yes, it's much more immersive than playing on a single monitor. The positional tracking is cool, and the general VR feel is great too.

BUT, the resolution absolutely sucks. Pixels, pixels everywhere. Hard to read text. Orangeish outlines around objects if not situated directly in front of the camera (i.e. if you slouch in your set). "White" stars with rainbow-coloured outlines. Not to mention is looks a bit blurry at times (have tried both lenses, and stuck As as my vision is 20/20). Oh, and the wires/leads are too short for anyone not situated at a desk. I realize some have had success extending. Also way too fiddly to set up - which of course can be partly excused by virtue of this being a development kit. Build quality is OK, but unfortunately my left side adjuster is loose, so it keeps "auto"adjusting when I take it off or put it on.

I'd give Oculus a 10/10 for effort, but a 6 out of 10 for execution. Perhaps my fondness for the thing will grow, but it's far from perfect. I may revert back to playing on a big screen TV for crisper imagery and forego the VR experience until CV1 comes out.

Am I the only one who feels this way????

It's good to see a critical review, because with all the hype it is never going to live up to my expectations.

+1 he has no idea what he is talking about.

I'll let you know when mine arrive.

It was just $500 including shipping and taxes after all, so I'm not expecting much. Still have TrackIR to hold me over for "consumer use" until the actual OR release.

If the unit is completely useless for [gaming] use, I can at least use it as a party gimmick, or dust off some old OpenGL code and play with it that way.

I must say that I'm most curious to see how the tracking compares to TrackIR.
