My bad - RTFM!

"Working as intended"

I now have a working cockpit light switch :)

Thanks again

I've modified the OP and the d3dx.txt (rename txt to ini) file to allow ambient lighting (dark shadows) to be toggled with the F3 key. There are places where ambient lighting makes sense, like when your ship is parked on a brightly lit planet surface. Here the reflected light of the ground will illuminate the bottom of your ship and the shadows it casts.

Another use for toggling ambient light is to couple it with the old lighting system (PrototypeLightingBalancesEnabled = 0). With ambient light off, the dark side of a planet is black as night, even using the old lighting system. However, if there is a bright moon or planet in the sky, this is not realistic. The old "bright nights" lighting system actually makes much more sense here.

When I encounter these scenarios through my natural game play, I'll post some images to help demonstrate these points. In the meantime, feel free to download the new d3dx.txt file and try it for yourself! Don't forget to set PrototypeLightingBalancesEnabled to 0 in GraphicsConfiguration.xml if you want moonlit nights and realistic canopy glass darkening!

hey @Old Duck , first things first: thanks for your work and for sharing it, the experience really changes with these settings. now there is a cold, vast space around you. i also removed the spacedust in supercruise, this makes it feel even more empty.

i played around for a week with different setups but couldn't figure out how to change the "space clouds" to my liking. i've tried a lot suggested in the forums but the entrys were old and some had the wrong or no effect with the newest game version.
i do like the dark space but i wonder if you could turn off the clouds but keep the nebulae (i just love to look at them from some 100 lightyears away. i know that you would not see them like they are in the game but its the future, there could be some sort of filter in the hud to see them, or directly in the eye of the pilot :D). this would be my perfect setup: really dark space, no dust at all, no speedlines, dark shadows, no weird sun glares or godrays, no clouds but nebulae

if someone knows please give it a shot.

Unfortunately this is likely impossible with the software I am using. The "background" for the skybox shares the same layer, so clouds, nebula, and the galactic core all are part of the same "picture". Thankfully the stars are on a separate layer, or there would be no options at all.

Now there IS a way to turn off the clouds (for the most part), but it has its own side-effect which I do not like. You can set LocalDustBrightness to -0.1 in the GraphicsConfiguration.xml file and turn down the gamma, and this is what you'll get (see attached images). I'm sure you can see the side-effect I'm talking about. Some people might actually like this, but I' personally want a night sky / Star Wars look, not a No Man's Sky / Star Trek look.

These images were taken in the Bubble not far from Sol. For those joining this thread late, these images in this post do NOT show what the OP mod does, but rather an alternative to using that mod.

@bobbysopor - Another option is to add a toggle to turn black skies on and off with a keypress, allowing you to turn off black skies as you approach a nebula and turn them back on when in the Bubble. The .ini file should give you an idea how to do this, but I can also provide a snippet of code for you if you need help with this.

I was playing around with the different parameters and the old and new lighting parameter in the config myself but i couldn't make it look somewhat realistic. when one thing looked good, another got horrible. i stick to yours. I really like the look of the game now with your tweakings. but sometimes, just sometimes i miss the nebulae. so a button for turning them on and off would be a great compromise.

I ruined the GraphicsConfiguration files several times and had to start over again, hackerman style . but my knowledge goes as far as what i learned in the forums so i would apprechiate a helping hand for the keybinds. i dont think a simple "F4" or similar after "endif" will work 🤷‍♂️😅

For my own personal use, I've tied space "snow" to the HUD, so that when the HUD is switched on (thank you so much @ifthisworks for figuring this out), the space snow is also visible. Having debris floating around in a combat zone or planet ring, the two places I use HUD, actually makes sense, and it does help a lot with visualizing ship vector and velocity.

I've not updated the file on the OP yet, as I'm still playing with this.

Thanks for showing us this incredible tool, Old Duck, I really liked it. I found a side-effect, unfortunately, it conflicts with the Steam screenshot key. I had it at f12 and it's no longer working. I tried moving it to shift-f12, f11 with no success. Then I remembered about the 3dmigoto and once I uninstalled it, I had my screenshots back.

I think I'll try tomorrow to see if I can exclude the function keys because I really liked E: D with it. By the way, I'm still using the original ini file you posted, without any key shortcuts in it.

Psst. Go to Steam/settings/Ingame and change your shortcut for screenshots!

I think 3DMigoto is overriding Steam, since they are both external "overlay" tools competing for keyboard focus. If this is the case then you may be in a pickle, though I have to ask - why not just use Elite's own screenshot key? As you can see by this thread, it works perfectly with 3DMigoto.

I just did, it doesn't work. I don't use any more steam shortcuts, just for screenshots, but from this sample I assume that everything gets intercepted before getting to steam. I tried f12, shift+f12, f11 and ctrl+=. Nothing works.
It's ok, I can use Elite's built in functionality q. I was just frustrated because I didn't know why it broke. And I prefer 300kb jpgs to 6Mb bmps. Unless there is an option to change the default screenshot type in elite.

Yes, I guess I'll use Elite's. Is there a way to change the output folder and file type? (Sorry for hijacking the thread)

I don't know. What I did was create a shortcut in my Pictures Folder linked to ED's screenshot folder, and then I use GIMP (insert your own favorite photo editor here) to touch up the images I like and then save them either as JPG for sharing or PNG for archiving. I then delete the BMPs.

New Feature using OD's Graphics Mod, transparent side panels. This may be the result of my HUD colors which were changed for colors I like.
Are we looking for something other than the transparent background? That effect is optional, BTW. You can turn it off by inserting a semicolon in front of the Handling=skip line in the appropriate section.

I've added the artificial horizon to the toggled HUD "collection" on my own setup. I really don't like how this floats OUTSIDE our ship and SRV in VR, but it's very useful for things like landing and getting compass bearing. For just flying and driving around the planet, however, I prefer it off with all the other HUD clutter.

If anyone is interested, I can upload the new .ini file with this addition. Just let me know.

There are some very smart people in this thread, so if anyone is looking for a challenge, consider the following image:

middle display.jpg

I really want to get rid of that "SUPERCRUISE ASSIST ACTIVE" display. The entire "panel" can go (scan detected, frameshift drive charging, etc). In VR this panel floats in my face like an annoying fly that needs swatting, and I can live without the information that's displayed in this panel, since most of it ends up in the info panel anyway. I've tried to disable this using all the standard shader tools, like I've done with many other things in this mod, but to no avail. Disabling this panel takes other stuff with it. I'm thinking there might be a way to identify shaders based on where they are in 3D space (this panel exists in a unique 3D quadrant), but I'm not well enough verse in the 3DMigoto tool or shader programming to figure it out myself. Perhaps somebody in this thread is.
