AMD RX 6000 series driver issues & workarounds

Back when I was using my Nvidia GTX 970 I had constant TDRs while playing Elite. Elite was the only program that would TDR the video drivers. When it happened, it was always while approaching a landable planet.

The "solution" was to underclock my card. Apparently, the factory OC was just unstable enough and Elite is (apparently) super sensitive to that instability.

I didn't like that the solution to my problem was "make my video card worse" so, ultimately, I just dealt with it for a while and accepted that if I was approaching a planet there was a good chance my game crashed.

Haven't had any issues after upgrading to the Radeon 6700 XT that I'm currently using (aside from the corrupted orbit lines).
You can fix the orbit lines using this guide.
Works fine for me (RX6800), you only have to reapply it after every update.
Otherwise no problems with this card for me.
I bought it second hand, it has even spent some time in the 'mines'.

FWIW, I tried some minor overclocking of my 4090 and RAM, and also some underclocking of my 12900k (in various combinations). The system appeared stable but Elite got unstable. After going back to stock and XMP profile all is well and no strange crashes anymore..

Note that I didn't do it all at once, but it seems that Elite quickly brought out any issues with overclocking. I've concluded that for me personally a few percent performance increase just isn't worth the hassle...

Has anyone else had an issue with the 24.x.x drivers playing ED:O? I have this weird issue where the game screen freezes but everything continues to run in the background. If I switch to desktop and back, the screen unfreezes. This only happens when menu elements are on screen e.g. galaxy map, station boards, carrier admin. I thought it could be an issue with low GPU usage scenarios but the same thing happens in the outfitting screen where the game is continuing to render stuff in the background.

I know this is a driver issue because it is also happening to me in other games including Helldivers 2 (the only reason I updated from my previously working drivers!)

I know it's a bit of a niche issue but there are some really knowledgable people here who may understand what's going on.

I'm also back to having horrible issues with screen tearing and jittering framerate when using freesync and ehanced sync. AMD seem to continually break and repair these features!

With the exception of the long standing orbit line aliasing issue, I haven't had any driver related problems with the game on any of the 23.x.x or later drivers and my RX 6000 series cards. I currently have 24.4.1 on my RX 6800 XT system with none of the issues you're reporting.

I have had the "freezing" thing happen a couple of times. The game didn't really freeze, but the mouse pointer seemed to be something like 5 cm off, this happened only in menu's.
It happens every now and then since i have set it to Borderless windowed mode, so i can switch to background programs faster, like Firefox (inara), and Materials Helper.
I have no issues with screen tearing or frame rate.
I have a RX 6800 and driver 24.4.1
You might try clearing the shader cache, so it can be rebuilt.

It's about 6 months since I last experimented with drivers for my 6600 and settled on 23.7.1 as the most recent one that didn't cause universal stuttering in all my games.

was 24.9.1 crashing for you? thats what im using and i keep crahing randomly with the 0xc0000005 error code, its driving me crazy trying to find out the problem, on AMD RX6600
😭😭😭

Anything more recent, and the FPS in all games is around 30-40% lower both before and after compiling shaders, than with the 23.7.1 drivers. I've still been unable to find a driver that doesn't have this issue. I check in every six months or so and try a few that have dropped in the meantime, before restoring my system image backup when they inevitably all have the same issue on my 6600... And yeah, sometimes I've also run into crashes while testing, but the biggest problem is the horrible frametime spikes on any more recent drivers. It's like the experience of playing the PC port of an Unreal Engine 4 title, but for every game.

Odyssey is very borderline on 8GiB cards and it's possible recent drivers either aren't as efficient at managing VRAM or aren't as aggressive in evicting assets. The only 8GiB AMD GPU I have is an RX 580 2048SP and I haven't had any issues with it with 24.9.1, but I also have to run at pretty modest settings and it's still near maxing out it's memory.

My only RDNA2/6000 series parts have 16GiB of VRAM and while it's been several driver versions since I've tested Odyssey on them, I haven't had issues with post-23.7.1 drivers. I'll probably retest with 24.10.1 over the next few days.

This error code reminds me of "Access denied". Maybe anti-virus is too eager? What does the event viewer show?
Edit: I can't remember the code, it could have been 5c or c5 and I'm wrong, but check the event logs...

Thanks for all the replays! to replay to all of them in order:
Hmm... no, no unusual crashing with 24.9.1 here. Did you already try the 24.10.1 release ?
Ill give the 24.10.1 a try today. I deleted everything to do with Elite dangerous and am going to reinstall it while running epic games as administrator.

I'm running Medium low settings, only thing i have on high is texture quality, and skybox quality and epic.

Nope, no antivirus. Ran sfc /scannow and disk check, and neither fixed it. going to delete all ED files and reinstall while running Epic Games Launcher as Admin

Here's a picture, if it helps!

Still disappointed they never made laptops with AMD's 7900m available over here or I would have picked one up immediately.

DIdn't know there was issues but my 6900xt was constantly going to a black screen with the most recent adrenalin (I think the driver would constantly restart) in certain areas. I since downgraded to the Pro drivers on AMDs website which are older and the issue is gone.

I sometimes get this with my 6600 but not only in this game. Sometimes, this happens while working on my desktop as well. I already changed the cable but that did not fix the problem. It seems to be a driver issue, it started about a year ago but not with all driver versions. Strange...

Yes, I've seen it a limited time here and there but mostly in Elite. I also ran into another issue, the Pro driver works fine for elite, but for BF1 it comes up with an missing driver error, so now I've downgraded to a adrenalin driver from 2 years ago and I didn't have any issue last night, so it's definitely the more recent drivers causing the issue.

Hey all, I have an annoying problem.

I'm running a rx 6800 xt and I get these odd lighting effects, like someone is turning a light on and off very fast, it's on some carrier parts and inside stations while taking off and docking. It's not 100% consistent.

I didn't see these on my old gtx 1080 so I imagine it's a driver issue. But I can't find much on it, except people being cross. Is there nothing to be done to resolve it?
