An investigation into Frontier's actions on Combat Logging

I don't recall putting 'git gud' in there though... [arrrr]

Perhaps you should have. The irony for the majority of the players who refuse to "git gud" is that if they actually decided to knuckle down and "git gud" then most if not all the things they complain about would no longer be a problem for them.

I play in a Private Group.

Just pointing out that being annoyed by pillocks is different than being afraid of pillocks. Something that people who talk in terms of 'having a spine', 'being afraid', 'hiding in solo/PG', 'cowards' fail to grasp. And it really reflects poor on those people if they think in those terms about a game.

I've often found that highly competitive people can only see conflict (and indeed most things) in terms of "competitiveness". Yes, it's a bit of a generalised statement, but such people seem unwilling or unable to accept that some people simply are not interested in competitiveness - and therefore must be "cowards", or need to "git gud".

Here's an idea I've not heard floated before- why not have a small "bubble" area around Eravate, perhaps 2-3 systems in each direction, where PvP is not allowed?

I applaud your objective but not the proposed 'Hand of God' method.

What has actually happened is that Adle's Armada has protected the starter systems for well over 18 months - both saving thousands and failing to save other thousands of Sideys.

AA went on to gain huge traction with this community in terms of its BGS, to win Season 1 of the PvP League and to win the right to compete in the Rise to Power as a wildcard.

That is the rich, engaging solution to PvP aggession - living, breathing PvP response. A huge part of player-driven Lore would be lost otherwise.

As Cmdr S!lk (AA Founder) has said, what is really needed is a hybrid solution - let AA do its PvP thing but helped by more aggressive NPC cop response, so BGS guys could do their bit my making the starter systems high sec.

So, why don´t we take a short cut here? I would like to have an option to block certain players from being instanced with me. I think this would have a self cleaning effect, because over some time the known gankers will be sorted out and will only be instanced with their friends.

Overnight the principal sidey-slaughterers would block Adle's Armada, invasive PvP-ers would block system defenders and Powerplay merit-grinders would block Powerplay attackers, while Powerplay underminers would block defenders.

'User-defined Open' would give the PvP bottom-feeders what they've always wanted: a Galaxy containing only them and PvE randoms who don't read forums or know anyone's names.

Not sure I've seen much acknowledgement from the PvP fraternity that some amongst them are actually part of the problem ...

I'm sure there's some PvPers that recognise this, but it doesn't seem to get acknowledged much in these sorts of discussions.

This is true and fair.

I am new to online gaming but as a PvP-er I clocked something early - the unwritten rule - we don't criticise each other when conversing with PvE-ers.

(Of course, between ourselves we call each other useless pilots and combat loggers who talk smack yet hit like a wet spaghetti noodle, all the time ... and do it publicly ... but that's different.)

This in-group / out-group mentality bears some similarity to how certain minority ethnic or minority sexual terms of abuse are considered acceptable if used by those within the minority itself, though not otherwise. (Presumably due to similar feelings of persecution, whether justified or not.)

ideally if the devs had such a magic wand, they would also wave in

state wide bounties
refused docking for enemies of the state
an end to the suicidewinder
waves of bounty hunters "you should not have messed with CMDR X" etc (aka like in 1st encounters)
potential to be kicked from the pilots federation (i believe lore wise they do not like their members killing their own without good reason)
and insurance company should also not take kindly to a handful of cmdrs costing them billions.

serial killers and terrorists, if we accept exist in real life and therefore its fine for them to be in game, should exist on the fringes of space shunned by society..... if they wanna role play that role, then they should get it with all its glory.

bring in all the above and i think some would accept the odd pointless destruction

Not to mention that terrorists generally attract attention from whole countries, each with very large armies and navies, a lot of soldiers, a lot planes with a whole lot of bombs and ammunition.

This game? It rewards griefing and punishes those who try to play it like it was envisioned.

And others realise that an online game that is evolving with the community demands and expectations realise that what was sold in Kickstarter was a concept and as such it's a moving goal. Just quietly... time to let the past be in the past....

valid point - not one i accept but fair enough.

I wonder if the star citizen backers will feel that way if SC launches in 18 months time with a minimal viable product with half of the stretch goals canned?.

what you are suggesting as far as i can tell is I give up ED EVER having a sensible, realistic/believable BGS and economy.

I am not at that point yet

Indeed.

The most fun 3 months I have had in this game, heck in any game, was during the DWE. No shots were fired, no combat took place and at times I was afraid I was going to need a grinectomy from all the antics I took part in.

What you are talking about has nothing to do with "logging" (writing a log file): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logfile

You are talking about actively pulling the plug or something to avoid ships destruction. 100 % of the time when this has been reported the human's intention to "cheat" only exists in your mind.

There are a LOT of other reasons why a cmdr may disappear suddenly. Especially in a game that carries on a growing bag of worms. A game that freezes, crashes to desktop and delivers connection failures all over again! [mad]

Bullcrap. The absolute dregs of the Elite community are the ones currently playing the forum meta-game - SDC. You guys don't even care about the game - this much is clear from watching your member's twitch streams - so don't try and come off like you lot are somehow trying to make the game better - I will laugh in your face.

And yet we spent 2 months of time and effort to highlight a problem which clearly matters to a great many players, the result of which is this thread and one of the most upvoted and commented threads ever on the ED subreddit. Whilst it may be correct to say that some members of SDC have lost their passion for the game, others still care very much and hope that the raised exposure to the issue of combat logging, and more importantly developer dishonesty, will spur Fdev on to higher standards in both areas.

A moral victory there but a shallow one. I concur, however FDev are the endgame winners. - they already have your money and my money - they dont care whether or not you and I play anymore, they are only focussed on new sales and player turnover to keep their shareholders and end of year surplus looking good.

Often made point, and not completely wrong, but it neglects one thing.
People who don't fly there ships are also people who don't buy skins for their ships, or other items from FD store, which is one of Frontiers sources of income.

And you mean standards like these quotes taken directly off the About Frontier Developments web page ?? :-

"QUALITY. Quality in all aspects of what we do is our primary objective, and the key factor in what makes a successful game. Our highly talented people use robust processes and tools to deliver innovative, successful, top quality games on time and to budget."

"CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. We are 'only as good as our last game' and strive to always improve every aspect of our performance."

Hmm is there a fail anywhere here...??

Essentially you said that every Cmdr death not caused by cheating is the fault of the Cmdr. So provoking crashes that lead to the destruction of a Cmdr ship by the station is just the Cmdr's fault because he was speeding, nothing else matters. Well, nice that you have such draconian punishment in place for speeding, while killing Cmdrs just for fun in secure systems just gives you a completely irrelevant Wanted status.

Yeah, you can just say that these are the rules. Doesn't change the fact that many players think that these rules suck, that your crime&punishment system sucks, and that these are key issues preventing players to even bother with Open.

I think there is a big difference from playing in solo or private group and logging out of the game when you are beat in combat.

the polls attract a slightly biased element as well, that said a ingame survey might be better rather than forum surveys

Slightly biased but overwhelming is overwhelming. This forum isn't that biased that a clear conclusion can't be drawn from the results.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! More bullcrap.

Translation:

"We SDC know exactly what we're doing : we see the holes in the game logic. We also love blowing people up. Therefore, we will use the holes in the game to cause even more players to blow up. Because we love mining salt. We also do not care one whit about the actual game content. To us, the players themselves - and their reaction to our actions which consist mainly of indiscriminate blowing up of players for no other reason than to mine their salt - are the sole game content. So what better excuse to do this than to discover every single hole in the game, and exploit it to its fullest. Bonus: we also get to play the forum meta-game, which mines further salt."

See thing is, I'm completely on to you.

I've listened in on SDC streams for a long time now. The lot of you absolutely care not a jot for any of the content FDEV put into the game. At the same time, FDEV are being monumentally dumb in giving any of you lot an ear, and falling for your meta-gaming.

Just keep trying to portray yourselves as the self-righteous police of the game. Anyone who isn't a <ahem> can see right through it. You claim to highlight combat logging - yet, by your very actions - indiscriminate player killing - you are actually baiting people into combat logging. You know fine well that by your actions, you are actively baiting players to do that. Of course, the stupid players who do combat log are playing right into your hands - you can then post your videos, make your reports, create a lot of self-righteous noise - and hope that FDEV fall for the meta-gaming tactic. There will be a lot of people who fill fall for this deviousness of course. I'm not one of them.

I agree, and I wasn't addressing the combat logging issue. Merely commenting on Ziggy's observation that there are many reasons some people may want to use Solo etc.

There's a lot of different discussion threads going on in this thread now, quite a few of them only tangentially related to combat logging. :)
