An Open Letter to FD Regarding the ESC Key

What, Did FDev reassign the "ESC Key"?

Say it ain't so.....
I can't say for certain, but it has been a long time gripe of mine.

Some UI elements in this game close with the ESC key, some don't, and the inconsistency is maddening. I really would like it if the ESC key only took me to the options menu when I wasn't interacting with any other UI element.
 
I don't get it. I don't use the esc to back out of any map or menu, why would you? You can double assign any key to be a map/menu back.

I think he's saying he wants escape to not back out of menus and only function to bring up the main menu.

Escape will automaticaly work in the same way as the UI back key, whether you want it to or not. So if you're in a menu like engineers or looking at a terminal, hitting escape will flow back up to the top before entering the main menu screen. Ideally, escape should just have one function if we've mapped a UI back key.

Also, a lot of Odyssey windows don't have any way to back out via mouse/button. Only UI back works (and escape does too).

To clarify, if I am in a menu, the ESC key should function as a UI back key. Same with the GalMap, same with System Maps. Any time I am not just staring off into space.

Do you people even play this game, for god's sake?
Hah! As if. The UI keys are all over the place. Try to do a ship-mission in Odyssey. Here you have to use keys only, there you have to use mouse only, and over there you can use both, but then... they work different here and there and over somewhere. Bleh. No consistency.

No.

Escape does not function universally as a UI back key. It needs to, but it does not.

I'm going to make a video now. I am not near a station, but I am going to open every menu/map that I possibly can, and back out using only the ESC key.
Any time you see the options menu pop up, the ESC key has taken me directly there.

edit - I need to go back to the FC first

Yep, I also pointed this out during the alpha. The ESC key is not coherent in the UI.
 
agree 1000%; also the no ship interiors ever dialog infuriates me.
But Braben said that we will have ship interiors, he also said that Raxxla is in the game. Two things I have never seen in Elite in 36 years, maybe we only have to wait a little bit longer.
 
Yeah, the inconsistency in UI is driving me crazy. But I am sure FDev are not aware of such issues, they think everything is awesome.

I use my right mouse button as BACK button (NMS taught me that and it's great when it works) but of course it doesn't work consistently in ED.
The same goes for the ESC key and I would really love if it worked as a BACK button throughout the whole UI.
Or if that can't be achieved then I would like at least the assigned BACK button to work consistently. But not even that does the trick (I can't exit GalMap/Ssytem Map with the assigned BACK button for example).



Just be careful about FDev fixings stuff because even that can be botched.
Example:
Since the alpha I have repeatedly reported the issue where the BACK button in the Mission screen (you know, where you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO click one more time to select a ship mission or passenger mission) did not work.
With the last patch they fixed it... only now the BACK button doesn't take you one step back (to the station menu) but takes you back all the way to the ship menu.

I mean how hard can it be?
