An Open Letter to FD Regarding the Zapper Tool

The zapper should be a non lethal alternative to dealing with scientists. Why no "game designer" thought of this obvious mechanic is baffling.
I think it should be both, depending how long you hold the trigger for. As you charge it up, a gauge shows you it's strength, from "low", to "stun" and to "lethal". Too much and it'll kill (useful when you actually want to kill, you just use it how it works now). Too little and it does nothing but hurt them, knocking off a little health. Somewhere in the middle is the right amount to stun.

My personal take on it anyway.

Lol, drop onto a settlement with a T-9 and start enslaving everyone, LMAO!
Exactly. Think about how cool that would be - flying from one end of the bubble to the other, just enslaving people along the way.

  1. The zapper tool should knock people unconscious
  2. We should be able to carry bodies
  3. Numbers 1&2 provided, we should be able to enslave people and sell them to market provided we have available passenger space
Make it happen, FD.

Zapper default should knock-out. "R" mode, illegal mode?, could still be deadly.

#3... !!!! YES!!!! Let's sell illegal slaves. Mega bux galore.

Ye of soft heart, wanna save the poor innocent scientist. Did you forget they're crazy lunatic psychopaths testing protomolecules on people??? :D Just kiddin'...

That's what i was getting at though. By all representation in the game it is nonlethal... it's just for the purposes of event triggers requiring death (e.g a murder bounty), it is. It's quite bizarre.

Melee on foot would be the equivalent of ramming fights in our ships.

It would be a lot of fun.

I think someone pointed this out already, but your Energy Link Discharge DOES Knock people out, and doesn't kill them, this is reflected in a little "Dizzy Stars" Icon in their nameplate.

However, the game doesn't register it, as there doesn't seem to be any state besides Alive or Dead, so you are still charged with murder. It seems to me like it's an intended but unfinished mechanic.

Also if you take someone out without anyone detecting it. Should be no bounty
I disagree with this - there has to be some consequence for doing illegal stuff.
Yeah.. this is one of the things i allow cognitive dissonance about.

You might not be detected right then, but after you leave, someone would probably find the body, an investigation would happen, they'd realise "the only person who came in was this guy, who just happened to go all these places in the base without triggering an alarm... it must be them" and issue a bounty; we're hardly sam fisher here.

But it needs to be an instantaneous bounty, otherwise you get into relogging exploits and stuff to avoid bounties, or a persistence of instance mechanism, neither of which is plausible in the current context. So, it's a bit clunky, but getting the bounty makes sense.

It's no more problematic than other instancing issues.

Unfinished. Yeah.
Like something couldn't be worked out, so they just went with the basics.
Hopefully they'll work it out.

Considering how long crime and punishment has been deeply flawed mechanically, I wager nothing will change for the foreseeable future. Even a game like Morrowind or GTA III from the early aughts has a more nuanced Crime system.

Yes and yes, this would make some assassination missions much easier

No! I am not that evil. But stunning and carrying people to your own ship would make the Bounty hunter business more immersive.
