An open letter to FDev regarding grind and accessibility issues with Odysey.

I have been playing Elite off and on since the middle of the Horizons season, but the longer I played, the more I began realizing the game wants you to work it rather than play it. I mean many of us have billions of credits and nothing actually worth spending them on other than buying more ships to engineer, which takes work, buying a fleet carrier, which takes work to upkeep, and now buying gear for the new on foot mechanics, which, guess what, requires work to upgrade. If credits are easy enough to obtain, let us do more with them than just buy more jobs to do.

Solutions for this would be quite simple, let us trade credits for engineering materials or upgrade mats for on foot gear, or at least make pre-upgraded gear more common to find than it currently is. You could even go as far as to implement a player economy for these with a widespread trading network, players put mats or pre engineered modules/gear up for sale by depositing it at a station and the buyer would make the purchase and either have to fly to the pickup location or pay some extra creds to have it delivered, just please respect my time and let me have fun with the game's systes and mechanics instead of paying for more work to do.

Next are the numerous accessibility issues introduced with Odysey. You shouldn't have to track down a screen in a settlement just to find the location you're looking for. wireless communication clearly exists in the Elite galaxy, so give us a portable data pad that can access this info from anywhere or at least let us get the info we need before leaving our vehicle. The orange color scheme continues to be a visual challenge for certain color blind players as well, and the new galaxy and system maps lack many of the conveniences found throughout Horizons. This feels like a major step backward in terms of UI usability.

To this end, I will be stepping away again after only 2 days of exploring Odysey content until these issues are resolved, but honestly I'm not holding my breath. I truly want to love Elite again and I was hoping Odysey would bring me back out into the black, but in its current form the only thing it does is make me question why I was even looking forward to it in the first place. Please consider these issues while you're working hard to optimize the technical issues out of the game.

Before I go though, I want to offer a big thanks for enhancing the docking computer to make surface landings away from settlements or surface stations easier. It took me forever to find suitable landing spaces and now I can just let the computer do it, which is honestly faster than me trying on my own. Keep up the awesome work and look for new ways to improve accessibility and I'll gladly return with cash for arks because I love some of the new on foot livery designs, but as you want to make me work instead of play the game I paid for, I'm making you work to get that extra cash out of my wallet.

Sincerely,
CMDR GlitchedVission
long time player and hopeful fan.

Nope, no more open letters, been playing a lot longer than you, the new DLC has some major issues (for some players!), which FD need to acknowledge and fix quickly, but we don't need another opinionated forumite, taking it upon themselves to tell FD what the rest of the player base is meant to be thinking.

Post your views, leave until they fix it and play another game, but stop with the "Open Letter"

I totally agree with you concerning this neverending grinding quest to hope for more fun. It's way too long and can be improved.

But I totally disagree about the galaxy Map. It was a PITA to use, and I find it a lot more clear and ergonomic now.

To my view...

I like the clarity and the bookmark separation that is now present, but in the Horizons map, bookmarking a station directly would allow you to plot the route directly to that station. Now in order to do that, you need to drill down to that system's map and find the station you bookmarked. If it's on a planet, you need to drill down even further just to do something that took only a couple of clicks in the Horizons map. so yeah, new design +1, removing already existing features, -2
