News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

Very true. I can nearly entirely play the game using the advanced gamepad controls. With button combos, I'm able to map just about everything. The only elements I feel could come up short are comms, I refuse to use voice, humans sound dumb, and the galaxy map.

With text comms, there will be no fast interface for quick text messages. Xbox players would probably limited to voice comms.

The Galaxy map is pretty useless if you can't type in system names. It is likely that FD could implement a floating on-screen keyboard, which works in a pinch.

However, both problems are fixed if Microsoft makes Xbox work with keyboards.

Cortana?

I wonder if they'll be able to change the HUD colour in Options while we fiddle with the config file ;)

And the Xbox has a keyboard already. This is not a showstopper.

Ah Edward ... I've seen the "We'll announce something when we have something to announce" comment on this forum since The Outsider was "officially" cancelled ... which actually prompts a question that I think only you, Michael or David could answer ... what is the current status of The Outsider? On hold? or Never going to happen?

The Outsider code will become your first-person walkies in ED

Sorry I think it's a bad idea also as development will be bound by the limitations of a console, lowest common denominator will rule. Now like many here I also am a console owner, I'm not bashing them, but the expectations of the mass of their user base and the technical limitations (particularly the controller) will be detrimental to the future of ED as I see it, though not to FDs piggy bank I know.

This kind of optimism is catchy. :)

<shrugs>Looks like the game will not become worse than it is now (pretty nice already IMHO), so I'm good.

Doesn't many of us play Elite Dangerous with a controller already? At least I do, with a Xbox 360 controller.

Not gonna lie, I'd prefer FDEV would put more effort into expanding the core gameplay before expanding to other platforms. :(

As far as I have bits and pieces about FD development, they have their own internal engine team doing this plus QA of course. So work goes in parallel. Release is already this summer, so they have already done majority of work it seems.

Yes, it is safe to assume the scope of the next expansion will be limited by the console's hardware restrictions. What a shame :(

BTW...I have a MacBook Pro. Love it to death when used for music creation, but it is NOT a gaming platform. ;)

Why would you think that? It seems have engine capable to work on PC and console, while not compromising quality of first one.

Diablo 3 was first Pc only, than they made a console version and the pc playerbase was angry because the console version was a lot better and all people that bought the pc version were only beta tester for the major release of the console version players claimed. it takes Blizzard now 1 year to release a patch for D3 on PC, what you think will happen to the patch interval of ED when the Console Version comes out. The playerbase of D3 on Pc is nearly dead. lets see!

It's a desirable feature, and we're assessing the viability. For now we can confirm it will share the same evolving narrative and galaxy state between PC, Mac and Xbox One.

In my serious opinion, this [players on any platform playing together] should be considered a baseline requirement. If it isn't "viable", M$ should have no deal.

As predicted. Coded in directx, designed for the xbox controller.

Why just XBONE though?
8 million more PS4s have been shifted.
Thats a lot of fifty quids you would be missing.

Fail move..... With coming fail results......wich will lead that the game will be dumbed down so hard to meet the limited console controls.

Realy shame. Did not expect to look for alternative so soon but it seems there will be an reason very soon to do so.

Just looked outside the sky has not fallen in... Unsurprisingly there seem to be a thousand and one conflicting opinions and very little critical thinking.

There will be no more swarms of pirates than there are already the P2P nature is what governs the amount of players in an instance...

I believe the thinking behind the limitations on group size in Wings is more to stop a overwhelming number of players grouped together totally dominating an instance...

Some console players will love ED some will hate it... However Microsoft have yet to have a killer game for their console so one might assume that Microsoft needs Elite more than Elite needs the Xboxone, that is was said from the get go that FD was intended to be release on other formats so that is not news.

As it stands at the moment the hardware performance requirements "min Spec" is outclassed by the Xbox One...

  • Direct X 11
  • Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
  • 4 GB System RAM (more is always better)
  • DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
    Nvidia GTX 260
    ATI 4870HD
  • The game client works in conjunction with server-based code to deliver its functionality / experience, and therefore requires a continuous internet connection.
That the Xbox is in simplistic terms windows 7 but with only one hardware configeration, does point to making the port less of a start from scratch...

DX12 is coming to PC, some people will not be able to run it though on there systems without upgrading to windows 10 if the buzz is correct, so in many ways it is likely that the real worry... ED will not take advantage of DX12...

So all in all OMGZZZZZZZZZZZZ the sky its still up there...

Edited to add the gamespace ie the galaxy could take every gameplayer on planet earth and still you might not meet another play dependant on your location...
