News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

The Outsider code will become your first-person walkies in ED
I don't mean to be critical of you, but you don't know this ... do you? My point was there has never been an official statement on The Outsider, and I've never seen a statement that Frontier even use technology they learned from previous games in future titles. Yes I suspect they used crowd behaviour technology they learned while developing RCT3 in Elite Dangerous ... but there's never been a statement to confirm that.

And that is why, I asked (and not for the first time recently) about the status of The Outsider, because getting an official statement on it has been bugging me since before the kickstarter.

As predicted. Coded in directx, designed for the xbox controller.

Why just XBONE though?
8 million more PS4s have been shifted.
Thats a lot of fifty quids you would be missing.

They already have a working relationship with microsoft. They said they're not ruling out other platforms down the line.

Sorry I think it's a bad idea also as development will be bound by the limitations of a console, lowest common denominator will rule. Now like many here I also am a console owner, I'm not bashing them, but the expectations of the mass of their user base and the technical limitations (particularly the controller) will be detrimental to the future of ED as I see it, though not to FDs piggy bank I know.

In terms of the controller limitations, I had a go playing purely with an xbox pad a few weeks ago. Dunno why, maybe I felt a disturbance in the pc force. The only thing that I found annoying was the galaxy map, which I reckon I could come to tolerate. Any limitations of the controls are already in, and have been for months.

As for everything else, the Xbone has at least as much grunt as my middle aged gaming pc which currently has no problem maxing the game at HD and above. In 5 years time? Who knows. But past evidence suggests there will be a lot more juice to wring out of the consoles as the devs get right down to the metal.

Check the DDF & DDA for more or less hints of what's been dropped.

Dropped?

Same thing could have been said about the wings functionality I am now enjoying. It was also mentioned in the design proposals, it was also not in the game at release and yet here we are. I think it is far more safe to assume that they will keep on working towards implementing those features as time goes on even if certain specific features indeed might be dropped at some point due to many different reason. Or replaced by something else entirely that fits better into what the game is at that point. Or maybe even expanded upon. Or...

This is indeed a ligitimate concern. We've got 9 months to finish exploring the galaxy to prevent this, we better get a wiggle on.

Nah...we only need to explore outwards a certain distance. I think there is a rather strong correlation between bad usernames and the distance they are bothered travelling before turning back. :D

And so the PC version of Elite is now forever tied to the hardware limitations of the Xbox one.

Yeah, it's a real shame my copy of the game running on a 3.5Ghz machine with 16GB RAM, a GTX 980 all driving a 4K monitor is massively held back due to Frontier's support of rubbish systems like 2GHz CPUs, 4GB system RAM and slow/old cards like the GTX 260 at fiddly little resolutions like 1920x1080.... except... hang on a second, what are these settings here in the menu? You mean that the Cobra engine is flexible enough to allow the game to run at multiple quality settings and scale itself according to the system it's running on!?

This is nothing but good news, and I'm looking forward to hopefully picking up a second copy some day to play on my PS4 when I fancy slobbing on the sofa for a change.

There's nothing in DB's original post about it being an exclusive.
i'd be a bit disappointed in Frontier if that was the case. It flies in the face of their original Kickstarter ethos, to keep the big boys away from having a say and investment in the game. MS no doubt pay big for exclusivity, but is that the only control asect they'd insist on?
I think unless FD actually need the money to fund the port, and that money also outweighs the potential profits minus the porting costs of a PS4 version, they'd be daft to go exclusive.
But then MS are aggressively pursuing exclusivity because every review compares XBoxOne vs PS4 versions and the XB loses out badly against the PS4's effortless 1080p.

Its good news for Xbox One fans and for E.D. More people playing the game and more support all over. And Frontier makes a healty profit.

Console gamers have a VERY short attention span as it is. Unless there's a massive mission overhaul, and we know there won't be because Michael has already said previously it'll require a lot of work and time, there's going to be a negative backlash with the big lack of content that's available and very simplistic missions

BREAKING NEWS: Xbox One announcement unites PC gamers! Have you read these forums over that past 4 months, many PC gamers also have a VERY short attention span.

Have you seen the keyboard add-on for the Xbox One controller ?

Have you ever plugged a USB keyboard into an Xbox One? I have and it works just fine, if FD are allowed to use it in game then Xbox One players can play with a keyboard and controller, which is just how many PC players play it today.

I'm quite surprised by this announcement, it seems to be a risky bet to me. Hopefully the game will be successful enough to be profitable, but I'm not quite sure this is the kind of game Xbone players want to play.
