News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

While I have nothing against you guys developing it for other platforms I really do hope that will no slow down the development.

Besides, what's coming in 1.3 besides another new ship or 2? Any news on that? We knew what's going to be coming in 1.2 during the 1.1 launch could we get a heads up on 1.3?

Tweet from frontier "coming to xbox one first - we'll talk about other platforms when we have more to say on that."

So it might come to PS4 afterall.

1.2 isn't out yet, it's in beta, but I'm pretty sure that we'll get updates about 1.3 in the upcoming weekly dev updates and the newsletters... you know, as has been the standard procedure for some time now.

Your average console user is going to love GALNET.

They're going to love the constant stream of shiny medals, rewards, high fives, "you are awesome's" and SE horse armour too.

Oh, wait.....;)

But seriously, I'm a little nervous about it, but it was always going to happen. Just very difficult to see how the lifeless ED universe (as it currently stands) is going to develop in a way that it might address the console market.

Let's face it, currently it is light years away from engaging at that level. Much work to do.

To those of you who think this is bad and that consoles ruin everything, have you ever bothered to look at what has kept Frontier Devlopments in business all these years?

Console and PC games, they are a multi-platform developer, they have also been at the cutting edge of developing for the Microsoft Xbox360 with some of the most popular Kinect games.

I was playing Screamride at the weekend, and seeing the Frontier logo on my Xbox One brought a smile to my face, the game brought and even bigger smile to my face as I thought about all the posts about how FD don't know what fun is. They do.

Setting a fast time on a racing coaster game, isn't that different from getting a fast lap in a Star Citizen racing module, and I couldn't help but find myself wishing that when planetary landings arrive how it would be great to find a coaster ride down there on the planet surface :)

Lets Play Screamride

That's my point, it already has been dumbed down. And today it was confirmed why.

Then wake up Sully, because it was confirmed 1.5 year ago, when FD confirmed their console ambitions.

Do you guys even read ED FAQ which is first hit in google? It clearly answers all questions about other platforms, *consoles* included.

Provided FDev have enough control over the network stack side of the Xbox One and the relationships between that and the other threads running, then there should be no technical reasons why cross platform cannot mean everyone in the same instances. Afterall its positional and status updates not English vs. French (the client server background stuff which is not so latency critical is "trivial").
.
Personally my only concern is that the Cobra Engine's capabilities are still pushed forward, but provided FDev are still committed to the two major/paid expansions (planetary landings and first person), then I'm agnostic about consoles. Some things do seem to have been dialled back or put another way maybe not accelerated into implementation, but its still too early to say whether this is due to prudence with the engine overall or to align with a console release (easier to port fewer features than many and may explain why such an "early" release onto Xbox One).
.
One consequence I hope for, is that we will see the last of (as I have mentioned many times in threads) calls for Executive Control, which will almost certainly not be coming into Elite's universe, because the UI would not be possible, with the myriad of windows required to enable those features and maintain feature consistency with both PC/Mac and Console platforms.

According to David, it's called 'Powerplay', and I guess new trailer gives few hints about that.

It's all we know really.

And here it comes..

Uh oh

So, essentially all those features that were supposed to be in the game at launch, are missing because resources had to be allocated for console port development?
I couldn't help but to notice that no answer has been given to question, concerning whether partnership with Microsoft will delay patching the pc game. Few other concerns have been addressed by the devs, but not this one, no and i think we all know why.

And then there is this:
"Elite: Dangerous on Xbox One will be the complete and authentic Elite: Dangerous experience. It will not be 'dumbed down'."

This one really triggered my radar. Console version will not be dumbed down? Well yes, because you have to dumb down the "lead platform game" so it can be ported over to consoles. That is how it goes with pretty much every console port. It would be an immense waste of resources to have two different versions of the same game developed at the same time. Solution? Make them identical and in this scenario the weaker platform dictates performance limits. This one answers the question about patch delays, too.

If i'm wrong and pc version will not be dumbed down -including any future content, nor will the patching get a whole lot slower than it is now, then it is going to be some sort of a record since a lot bigger studios/publishers have taken a different route on this.

This explains why the main focus has been PVP. Ah well, was a fun ride. Will see how the game plays at the end of the year. Have fun ya'll.

I think David should have a long talk with mr. Roberts.

Just on the first point, If FD haven't been developing with consoles in mind from the very beginning I'll eat not just my own hat, but any three hats of your choice. (Barring novely hats used to promote beverages. Bad experience with a guinness hat back in '02.)
