News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

It's a really good game and had so much potential. I was planning on playing it properly but due to bad matchmaking and a small pc community I quit after a couple of months. The only modern shooter I've liked since quake.

On the plus side I can dedicate all my time to elite instead :D

I really had fun with it too and feel the same as you about it, it just didn't have long term appeal for me at the time, I should revisit it for a few rounds some time.

It's a desirable feature, and we're assessing the viability. For now we can confirm it will share the same evolving narrative and galaxy state between PC, Mac and Xbox One.

In a galaxy as large as EDs I say the more the merrier when it comes to player interaction. Especially since it sounds like we will be sharing supply, demand and community goals either way. I know in the past FPS games and tested cross platform play and realized keyboard and mouse was superior to the game pad, so they tossed it out. I don't think that would be a issue in ed at all where balance would come into play (pvp) with the many controllers for xbone and the general idea of joysticks being the way to play I don't see any imbalance that doesn't already exist in the current game.

The idea of being able to play with and or against players from xbone and mac is more exciting to me then any update or expansion mentioned so far. I hope the only thing holding them back is IF it can be done and i hope they figure out a way to do it! Either way I'm glad it will be added to xbox as it's more funding for the game we all like to play.

Yeah, that's just not that case.

Each console, despite being the same at the very lowest level, is not just a PC. There are hundreds of thousands of lines of code running in the OS of a PC, Mac, and XBO that are totally different. While many elements will port across no bother, there will have to be work done. It's not just a BUILD > XBO button that will magically make it work. They have to integrate it with the XBO (granted much of this work will be done in their previous development on the cobra engine) so that basic things like saving a file, or sending network traffic work. Additionally, they will need to spend time getting the graphics set up just right.

It's not as complex as it used to be, but it's not a trivial job either. And they don't just have to do it once. Every update has to be built and tested on multiple platforms.

Yes, maybe I was a little too trivializing, but basically you still make the case. Every xbox1 is identical. Debugging for PC with multiple configurations, graphics cards, drivers, OS levels, etc. also presents issues for support (just ask players on the forums that still have random explosions, stuttering and other issues while most have no problems). And while configuration has to be done it isn't like coding for a completely different target architecture like a Cell processor.

I expected this announcement but maybe after the Mac release. FD have talked about it for a while and given their background and praising their Cobra tech as multi-platform, it was no surprise at all. I hope MS gives them good co-op dollars for temporary exclusive on consoles, as well as attracting new players of course.

Doesn't that sound familiar....

The difference is ED has a lot of potential and is only at the start of it's development. Wings is a big step up, once they overhaul the mission system it will have a good future. With the xbox announcement FD will have more revenue and ED has more chance than ever before to have a long lifetime as more of a mainstream game instead of just being a niche pc title as it was up until today.

Titanfall had numerous chances to change the matchmaking on pc and followed up with lackluster badly made maps for it's dlc that missed the fundamental points of the game.

ED was made for pc first and that's always going to be the more superior platform and then ported to consoles. Porting a console game to pc has always been the problem.

Remember, the cobra engine has always been designed multiplatform, they mentioned multiplatform on the first FAQ point on the kickstarter page and FD have financed their business with console games for the past ten years.

FD aren't suddenly going to release a patch in the summer and set all gfx options to 720 and 30fps. They're not suddenly going to stop you being able to bind keys to your keyboard or hotas because "it's not on an xbox controller".

They're making the game they want to make on pc and that's not going to change.

+1, honestly this is the first game, in a very long time that consoles will be getting a PC PORT.

They're making history here.

So, without reading through 11 pages of content (at 20 posts/page), am i right in thinking this is the first cross platofrm online playable game once Mac (and XBone) versions come online?

That's excellent stuff, and I hope XBOne brings with it a lot of online playing folk.

Pretty sure it's shared Galaxy but not cross platform. Kinda like xbox owners all playing in solo

Thank you!

I cannot wait to jump into this game on my Xbox One. I'm so happy to see the Xbox get some love from PC game developers. I'm a huge fan of PC gaming though I don't do much of it. Last year I wet my feet with Eve Online for a few months. Now I'm biting at the teeth for Star Citizen.

But those were pipe dreams to come to console. I knew this. But now Frontier has answer my prayers with a chance to do something AMAZING on consoles. SO TIRED OF ALL THE DAMN FPS's!!!

.......Shut Up and Take my Money!!!!

In response to cross platform capability. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=121383&page=15&p=1880219#post1880219

Is the story of the Xbox One series going to be controlled by the Devs yet again, or are they going to have some sort of power and control over what they do.

I wonder if planet landing and first person are still on the agenda - would like to see something 'soon' regarding these future expansions.

Personally, I'm glad FD have partnered up with Microsoft to release ED to the console market, for no other reason than it, hopefully, produces a nice strong revenue stream for the company and the game itself. That said, I certainly hope the past plans for the expansions have not been muddied or changed... with no one saying anything to the existing, invested, backer, community, because we all know how well that goes down, don't we!
I Wouldn't spend time worrying about that. We'll give regular information out to you guys on these topics when that information is in a communicable state.

On the one hand, Edward's comment is very re-assuring, like taking Soma or a Jedi mind-trick.

On the other, it is like taking Soma or a Jedi mind-trick.

Sorry Edward, not meant personally. But it sounds like FD is in the midst of a communicable information disease outbreak. We need to be protected from the ghastly 2013 outbreak of sharing concept art, WIP pictures and plans beyond a 4 week horizon. I remember the backer reaction to that. Gads it was horrid. :)

No the worst outbreak was one of the devs confirming they've been working on different module types that were craftable in some way but wasn't 100% sure they would be on the roadmap. Luckily it was confined to a single thread so I think a lot of people missed it ;)

Whaaaat??? lol

I think this is great. Sure my initial reaction was CONSOLE SCUM NO! But then after a few minutes I realized that it will enable so many new people to play Elite. My son will be able to learn easier. Once he is old enough. Same with my nephew and niece.
More people buying, more people flying, gives me confidence in Fdevs future for the game.
Still kinda going no inside a bit though.
