I think that's a misinterpretation on your part. All these 1.x patches have done is fix bugs (some introduced by the preceding patch) and deliver planned content, charging for such code would lose even their most loyal supporters.

Now, if they release a major update that changes the game from its designed release state by addition of content (e.g. ED 2.0), then of course FD would be charging for that, the same as any other publisher. But the subsequent point releases would all be free because it's inevitable they would introduce more bugs with such large change, and the onus is firmly on them to fix their own stuff.

Thank you, that's why I asked. My English is poor and did not know if I understood right.

So glad this game is coming to PS4, just sucks that X1 gets a timed exclusive.. damn MS first you jack Tomb Raider with a timed exclusive and now ELite Dangerous.. dang it lol

Thank U. I have the expansions. But what I meant was that in the text I had the impression that the update 1.3 will be the last (free of charge). And I think it's too early.

English is a remarkably imprecise language, unless you go out of your way to be precise. FD are extremely good at making statements that are very ambiguous. How deliberate this is open to question, but it seems to be firmly entrenched in the way they work.

If 1.3 proves to be the last free update, the statement that you read would be consistent with that. The statement DOES NOT say that 1.3 will be the last. It is also consistent with FD underlining (for various reasons) the fact that there have been 3 free updates since general release. Personally, I think the latter reading is much more likely, but this is FD and they do like to make ambiguous statements.

Just a quick note, we're disappointed at the number of derogatory terms for console and/or PC users we are having to deal with in this thread.

You want us to come up with new, different, more creative derogatory terms?

David Braben plays with an Xbox controller, want to tell him he is wrong?

It's a falsehood that you are spewing but a good direction for Elite to go in none the less, yes.

The average console gamer is 31 years old

Did you actually ever looked in controls section in menu ? I guess not.

David plays with Xbox controller on the pc wich is still has keyboard and mouse connected to where is a lot of controls bound to this 2. the average console user will never go with keyboards and mouse on they console.... The logic is simple ( have asked many times by ppl with consoles this question ) why I schould buy/ connect keyboard/mouse to my console? For this I can simply can go over to PC.

You get the point now? Lots won't do have/ buy those two only to run ED.
So the FD will have to dumb down controls to meet the most majority of the Xbox users with only controllers with very limited buttons compared to pc

I still don't understand why people on this forum who don't have an XBox or aren't going to play Elite Dangerous on XBox even care why there is an XBox version? I don't have or ever will have an XBox and I don't mind in the slightest there is an XBox version. Would I want a PC only game? Would I want a PS4 version? Maybe but there being an XBox version makes no difference to my game at all ... or at least, at this moment in time it doesn't, we'll see how things do or don't change when the XBox version is being played by people.

I think you do understand..

Some people are unhappy because it's now obvious to them that certain things in-game (ie:- the quite horrible UI) and certain limitations and graphic downgrades (yes, for some reason certain things looked better in early beta) that the game was designed from day one with consoles in mind and this has ALREADY hurt the PC version. Not that it will change the PC version but it already did.

Yes, I have seen this said on this forum before ... but I've also seen it said that the only reason we're debating this is because of the Kickstarter. If the game had been developed without the Kickstarter, the first we'd see of the game would have been maybe Alpha, for a lucky few, Beta for a lucky few more and pre-release media for most of us. We would not have so many disappointed or rage-quitting.

In your opinion ... I dont see anything currently in ED thats being limited by the fact that console versions are coming ...

What you would consider a horrible UI, others would consider perfectly usable ..

In the end FD have taken the middle ground approach to this in that they always knew a console version was coming and have built the game with that in mind, but at the same time made it perfectly playable and usable on the PC. I dont see (IMO) anything in the PC version that is being held back or 'dumbed down' due to the impending console versions.

FD also have to cater for PC players who don't want a cluttered overcomplicated game / UI as well you know ... Just as they have to cater for those with lesser PC specs. You cant create a game which is so complicated and so technically challenging that only a handful of 'Elitist' PC players get to play it.

It's more the game itself is very simplistic (not in itself a bad thing, many simple games are tremendous fun). In all honesty I think it was always apparent that ED was a very simplistic game, considering modern technical capabilities of even an average PC, and I really felt the reason it was simplistic was to be able to move to console without seriously amending the game, and I seen to remember that Braben was quite open about this early on anyway. It's very much an arcade shooter rather than a sim of any kind, and even the very limited list of trade commodities was a pointer to the fact it was recognised by FD that it would be onerous using a gamepad to traverse an ambitious list like the one in the X games. I don't really have an issue with any of this, as an arcade space shooter ED can be fun and the way I view it, the console market could throw FD a much needed lifeline and that's only going to benefit the Elite fans in the long term. I have consoles, PCs, Shields, tablets, they all serve a purpose to a gamer.

For me the main issue is that it's now apparent that the PC user base was relentlessly gouged and bore the brunt of a botched release, merely because they were seen as beta-testers for the console version. Many of us said the game was released still in beta, and this largely tends to support that view. Now, FD are not the first company to do this (ZOS famously just did this with ESO) and they won't be the last, but as someone put it to me the other evening, in the process Braben has fallen from childhood hero to a simple cash grabber. I personally thought of him as this early in the ED story due to the excessive gouging, but I can see how a new wave of people will react to this latest round of news by forming a negative opinion of FD and Braben. Of course, he doesn't care about this, because since the Outsider failed and nearly brought FD down, Braben has been on the ropes trying to save his skin and his company, so he will simply follow the money.

Sorry, but I'm going to disagree with this. When The Outsider was dropped*, Frontier had already released Lostwinds and Lostwinds 2 ... possibly their most successful titles. Which would suggest to me that they were far from the situation of "trying to save the company". If the kickstarter had failed, we'd not have Elite Dangerous, but Frontier would have continued to release other games.

* We still have not had an official statement on The Outsider ... Michael, care to comment?

I always felt that the UI was actually designed for the Occulus Rift i.e. you could do everything need without having to take it off every time you docked. I might be wrong right enough as I frequently am. I can't see the problem with an xbone version, loads of games are cross platform why should ED be any different? I do wonder how successful it will be as I would have thought this is a very different game to the usual ones that sell well on the consoles.

Well, if you look at their cash situation (I don't have it on my desk but you can look at it on Duedil or suchlike) they were in serious trouble at that point. They probably had a couple of months worth of wages in the bank and that was it. So, perhaps they had assets but without cash at hand they were in trouble. I agree that the Kickstarter was not what saved them, it was the IPO (although made to look enticing by the Kickstarter).

The gamepad and OR work really well together in ED but you end up taking the OR off in flight on pretty much every trade run, as you need to write things down or screenshot them and refer. When I was still playing I actually ended up ditching my OR and using 1440p monitor instead, the game looked awesome still but I did not have to keep taking my OR on and off!

However, just because it is obvious to them does not necessarily mean that they are right. Michael has explicitly said :

Consoles weren't a consideration when we developed the UI for the PC version.

Michael

Are you calling him a liar? I for one can happily believe him on that statement, if only for the even more obvious (to me) position that the UI is as it is for the Oculus Rift. And, of course, I may even be wrong on that one.

I DO, FWIW, believe that the game has been changed, and will continue to be changed, because of consoles. But I say that because I believe the assumptions that FD are making about the needs/wishes/desires/whatever of the console market are taking the game more towards pew-pew and away from the 'trades are balanced/naughty things are allowed but there will be consequences' position that they started with. For me, personally, that makes E: D a worse game. I'm sure there are plenty who think that it improves it. C'est la vie.

We are hardly Beta testing JUST for the console version, we are also beta testing for the PC version as well .. And at no point did FD disguise the fact that ED was going to be anything but an ongoing development (ala Minecraft)

in the process Braben has fallen from childhood hero to a simple cash grabber.

You really dont understand how real life works then do you ... David and the rest of FD are not just creating ED or any other game for the sake of it, they have bills to pay the same as the rest of us do as well.

Are there people here who really see the xbox as a powerful system? Are you playing on potatoes?

I _could_ have played ED on my 'old' pc (Athlon II 4core 2.3ghz, Radeon Hd 7770, 4 gb Ram, it wouldn't have looked anywhere near as pretty and probably would have juddered a bit but it would have run. XB is better than that.

We still have not had an official statement on The Outsider ... Michael, care to comment?

In 2001 Braben admitted the Outsider was cancelled. He later denied it.

https://web.archive.org/web/2011012...20/frontiers-the-outsider-has-been-cancelled/

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has received word that David “Elite” Braben’s much vaunted next game, The Outsider, was apparently cancelled yesterday.

Edit: David Braben has confirmed to us that development on The Outsider has ceased, explaining that it was due a “change [in] priorities” with regards to unannounced projects, telling us that he is “very sad” about the resulting redundancies. The full quote is below.

Edit edit: Braben has since claimed to Develop that, “There is still publisher interest in the project, and we haven’t cancelled it.” So it’s all a bit confusing. We’re currently trying to establish what “changed priorities” actually means, and have got back in touch with Braben for clarification.

An article in the media is not an official statement. Please link to where on the forum The Outsider was officially cancelled in a statement by a Frontier Employee. (Hint: I haven't seen it and I've been here since 2008)

its about time this has come about . I have always wondered why consoles cant compete with pc's.
im wondering now. if the xbox/xbox live is fee driven gaming. does this mean frontier are going to start charging to play pc version like xbox live?

As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

Braben has slagged off just about every single past publisher that took the risk of a Braben space game. Including the last one Gametek which was pushed to bankruptcy by Braben's last game First Encounters.

Frontier Dev has never completed a Braben game. The last attempt was the Outsider and it lost millions for its backer Code masters.

No wonder that Braben could not get any publisher to touch ED. Braben had to publish it himself and it is fitting that he is now himself being forced to pay the punitive cost to reputation and business of publishing a Braben space game.
