News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

If we are going to be able to play with Xbone people, I think sadly I'll be switching permanently to solo mode.
I "experienced" some of those people when a friend lent me his Xbox 360 for a couple of weeks. *shudders*. ..never again.

It will depend on the demographic of the XBox players that buy ED. I'm pretty sure it won't be given away free with a copy of COD.

Your unthinking prejudice does you no favours, good luck in solo.

I agree with Steve50. And I think the demographic will be the same...

In either case; We'll both probably be playing the game Solo.

As a mature console gamer, and a player of Elite back in the day, I'm prepared to invest a lot in this game to make my experience as good as possible. I just hope we get some flight stick options for the Xbox One announced. Though I hear that people using the wired PC/Xbox controller say it works pretty well. I'd be very interested to see what people on here think about using the xbox controller. :)

I think people worrying (quite rightly) about the mouthy, spotty adolescent console crowd they fear console sales may attract may be a little misplaced. I think people that will buy Elite dangerous will be either mature gamers, or sensible kids. That's how it was with the original in my day. The idea (I feel) of a game of this type just won't won't appeal to your FIFA/COD crowd, and the ones that slip through the net wouldn't stick around for long, anyway when they realise the amount of time you have to invest to get the most out of the game.

Has anyone heard any rumors for sales options for the X1? As far as I'm aware, the PC version is currently only available digitally (is that right?) and only from Frontier directly. I'm wondering if they will go digital only with Elite Dangerous on the X1. Advantages would be because it's a unique game that may not appeal to mass market, they would avoid the risks inherent to manufacturing and shipping costs. :)

That would make a lot of sense, and I would not be surprised to see, on the amount of total sales for ED so far that the percentage of disk V Digital versions being quite small. Be an interesting set of figures though.

Any word on if Alpha and Beta players will get the xbox one version for free or at least at a discount?

Why would they? There's been no word, but I'd expect it to be a full retail product. I doubt MS would let FD give it away to existing customers.

I didn't get Minecraft for free on the XB even though I've bought it several times for the PC for example. Just because you bought or Kickstarted ED on PC (and Mac as that was included), doesn't mean you get it for free on *any* future platform.

Indeed .. Kickstarter backers shouldn't get any console version for free... However I think FD should leverage the existing alpha and beta backers to at least use them to test the initial version of the console ports. I wouldn't expect that to be the case of course, but it only seems logical to do something like that.

I would expect them to ask people to apply to be in the Beta, if they have one. That's usually what happens with Xbox games when beta testers are required, as I've participated in a few. :)

If you have the PC version why would you want an xbox version anyway? Seems like a backward step to me unless you wanted to lay on your sofa and watch it on a big tv which from my experience means seeing it in the same aspect, as the tv is further away. Maybe I'm missing something.

That depends. My TV is 60". My XBox One has body tracking and the best Mic array in the business (TrackIR and Voice Attack anyone?). My sound system is 5.1. The only thing holding me back from embracing the XBox is the lack of a proper flight stick.

Well yeah, I have a 50 inch thing with amp and 5.1 but thats no real difference to my 28 inch duel monitor and 5.1 surround on my pc. Im 1 1/2 foot away from the monitors. Im sitting at a desk with a comfy office chair, my x52, ed tracker, voice attack and mumble with my mates while watching star trek on my other tv and browsing the internet . I cant see any advantage to an xbox . That's why I don't understand , its just me . Besides the wife would go mental if I said "Off the sofa dear I want to play ED , you can record Eastenders and watch it after I go to bed at 2 am" :)

I concur. Anyway, one thing you can do is to mute any offending player, though " jet ramming" would be very annoying to see in ED. It's a bit like going to a pub , you may meet decent people, you may encounter muppets.

One observation I am going to make is prefaced by the amount of you tube videos that I have been watching and the fact that I have a 22yo and a 13 yo COD and Batttlefield freaks in my house. As long as making money is harder than ten minutes worth of work. Very few players will be wasting their time ramming ships or doing strange things with their ships and their money. They may not care if they die, but they will care when they have to log another ?? hours to make enough money to buy that ship again. ED is a commitment really, even if you only spend an hour a day you are committing to how you play in your universe. I can't wait. Admittedly I haven't played yet, I can't wait. I will play it on the Xone and I will hope for a stick and good voice control. I look forward to some of you sticking your nose in the air as my ship flies about, but for the others, if we can play together, I think we can have a great time!

I play the game with an xbox pad anyway, i even have a HOTAS stick but prefer joypad. I really don't understand what the fuss is about HOTAS anyway. Its just overcomplicates things, whereas for me personally, a controller streamlines. I also have 5.1 surround sound, and a 42" TV. Much prefer gaming on my xbox over PC as long as the graphics aren't hugely different. Which they won't be, because PC hasn't overtaken the current gen enough yet for their to be any huge disparity. Add to that there won't be any hackers, and bugs will be easily found and dealt with.

So yeah, i would like to be able to play ED on my xbox. What would be awesome is if i could play on both with the same commander....

In all honesty I have played games for decades on various formats online and off. One thing sticks out , there are (insert adjective of your choice) on all formats, in all games so I don't think the demographic of console players is at all relevant here. All that matters is that funds flow into FD so they can actually make the game what it should be and not compromised by limitations of one system or another , whatever that may be.

If we are all honest, all we want is a decent game, preferably what we signed up for. If the best way to fund that is to bring in the console versions then that's fine by me as long as Elite develops as a game and not as a 1st person shooter with no content with rooms full of deathmatch / capture the flag tournaments
