News ANNOUNCING ELITE DANGEROUS: HORIZONS

Great to finally see the good news. To be clear, I paid quite a lot for the Kickstarter back in the day, so ill be getting this for free, and access to the Beta I would guess.

Having said that £30 for this pretty big expansion sounds like a decent price. Frontiers Devs HAVE to make a living, so on-going revenue has to be pulled in in some way. Its either this, or a subscription model. Personally, I think this works out to be a lot cheaper for pretty much everyone.

Airless planets first, as expected. DB has stated this would be the case on other occasions. Simply because airless worlds have no (low tech) life and no atmospheres, and even when inhabited by peeps, it tends to be "moonbase" type structures, and no having to model metropolises.

Really looking forward to giving it a spin when the beta hits.

Trying to charge a PB backer

Yes you do - Premium Beta access or above includes the lifetime pass.

Michael

Anyone else having this problem - I am a PB backer but when going to the Frontier Store and trying to order ED:H Beta it is trying to charge me £39.99 (£49.99 less £10 loyalty discount).

Surely it should be charging zero in view of my PB status. Or is it simply that they have forgotten to factor this into the store yet?

I was going to say... I hope someone was going to mention that at some point.

As always, I could edit :D to become :H to keep the tradition alive... but that'd look funny. :p

To be honest I'll probably type E:D:H jut for the heck of it !

Just to confirm Xbox preview players who paid £24.99 for the access, will now be asked to pay £39.99 minus £10.00 discount (£29.99) = £54.98?, and yet new players can jump in at £39.99?? I must of read this wrong please could someone tell me where Xbox One preview players stand in regards to this announcement.

Thanks

So the question is...

Seemless sandbox... or lots of min-games?

Can you fly down/around a whole planet? My spider senses say no, but then it does mention dog fighting in canyons? Fingers crossed!

Can we fly down seemlessly to the planet, or is it done via a new "jump mechanic" so we lock onto a planetary location, and then press a jump button and are taken down there (automatically)?

Will the things you can do on a planet simply be (more) self contained mini-games (again)? ie: Find a rock to mine, mine it, onto the next? Fight for the base, and then what? Next time you log on someone else is in there? Or are we going to get the broader mechanics? Find a location, and be able to "build" upon it/utilise it in someway?

Mother nature? With all these worlds be completely dead? Not even ice geysers or volcanic activity?

Guess we'll find out how deep the sand is in this sandbox over the coming months...

Just my guess: if they start with airless planets first, that means that flying into planets with atmosphere is going to require more work. Why would it require more work if you would just push a button and taken down? So, I think you will actually be flying down, otherwise, they would support all types of planets.

From the community website announcement:

"These worlds are gigantic, and - like the open galaxy - you'll be able to go anywhere. You'll be able to fly over the surface in low orbit and choose your spot to land"

It says you'll be able to go anywhere and fly over the surface and choose your spot to land.

Again, this is just my guess.

If you have PB then you don't have to order anything to begin with so there is no problem. ;)

As I understand it, if you are a premium beta backer you don't need to do anything - you will just get it automatically.

If Horizons come for the Xbox, that's pretty much it yes. That's what PC users have to do - except we had to pay £40 or more.

I suspect it will get added to your account in due time since the beta isn't even live yet. They only just announced it today!

You don't need to buy it if you have the lifetime pass.

Apologies in advance for not being able to plow through an 84-page threadnought, but I still recall planetary landings in Frontier and was wondering about two things:

1) Airless rocky planets in Frontier and FFE sometimes had surface starports. I think there may be some systems in the ED map that had their surface starports from FFE moved into orbit. Will there be surface starports on airless rocks in EDH?

2) Anyone remember the MB4 mining machines? Will there be some equivalent?

I wonder how Frontier done to develop the 2015/2016 season Horizons with all the future expansions in this season. There are thousands of collaborators ? Extraordinary !

So their expecting people who funded them to pay more for the same content than people joining after full release... absolute joke.. I'm sure this extra content will make this game even more amazing if not even the best game ever and I'd love to play, but if that's how they're going to be, me and friends are out it was hard enough trying to get friends to buy it for £24.99

Not sure if someone's already asked this but I wonder what a non-PL purchaser would see when a PL purchaser flies down to a planet. If it IS actually a seamless experience for the player performing the landing and both PL and non-PL owners share the same universe, it seems to me that this scenario could easily come up.

OK, planetary landings. Very well but i expected that this was the big Gamescom news.

The trailer looks really good but we already know that Frontier is good with this stuff.

Personally I think it's a little bit early for landings. IMHO the main game lacks a lot of things more important than this...

They will hopefully work on both fronts. But I am optimist.
