News ANNOUNCING ELITE DANGEROUS: HORIZONS

Suits me fine. By the time the price I've paid $150 for the game, I'll have been playing for maybe 2 years. $150 is pretty good value for hundreds/thousands of hours of gameplay. I could spend that on one night's drinking.

And for me, that figure is dwarfed by the amount I've spent on hardware just to play this:
- Windows 8.1
- 64GB thumbdrive to install
- TM Warthog
- TrackIR 5 Pro
- MFG Crosswinds pedals (on order)
- new gaming PC (not yet ordered, but inevitable)

Totally agree. Put over 800 hours into £40 Elite. About 15 into £40 Arkham Knight. Enjoy both immensely but value for money Elite smashes it.

He did explicitely say they will not be part of this season (Horizons) and will be released further down the line.

Which is a bit of a reorganisation of how the expansions were described previously. I think most people got the impression before that you could buy into a 'planetary landing' expansion, or a 'walking around the place' expansion, or both or neither. What's described now with 'seasons' is more of a time frame of updates as they arrive, without an ability to pick and choose the things you want. Nobody will be able to get the 'season 3' update without also buying into the 'season 2' update. This totally makes sense from a development perspective but is a fair bit rougher from a consumer choice perspective.

So
Base game $50
Moon landings $50
Atmospheric landings $50
---
Total $150

After all that, once your soul and wallet is crushed under the gravity of planetary landings, you can spend another $50 for walking in ships, $50 for walking in stations and $50 for walking on planets. After that you can sacrafice your firstborn to get everything else they promised to deliver, and your grandchild so they fix all the bugs and balance game mechanics.

Check out the prices for Star Citizen:

Ship starts at $25,-- going up to $19500,-- (yes, really) for the whole collection of ships.
Then there is monthly subscription: $13.10 for the basic, $26.20 for additional beta access.
Then there are extras: paint jobs, upgrades etc. from $6.55

Sounds more reasonable now?

But is this a separate game from ED, or is it truly an expansion so that the existing game is all part of this landings stuff? I would hate for it to be an OPTION you choose at the startup screen. Basically being the original ED we have now, and the Horizons game another choice, but not both are happening together.

I am assuming this is an add-on, but some of the wording made me question whether this was a stand-alone thing. Sure hope not! That wouldn't be nearly as cool.

Also... Is this for Xbox One too? Or just the PC and Mac platforms?

Just click on the dev icon in the top corner of the first post and read Michael's replies, they will answer most of your questions.

No and Yes are the short answers.

I don't think you could really say most people would have thought that I'm afraid.

Interesting. So you're in SC, slow down to set distance near planet, option to enter OC, enter OC, game generates planet terrain via similar type screen to exit SC, then you enter the planet and can fly about at will??

Too early to be sure I guess.

...funny how it was all seamless all the way back in 1993. Too bad they made this game an MMO - they had to sacrifice all the cool game mechanics from Elite II...

I really enjoy Elite: Dangerous and wanted to pre-order the expansion when I heard about the news. However like some of you, I decided not to because a few things concerned me:

1. I already paid US$60 for the base game, why am I paying $60 again for the same game with some new features?
2. The community announcement says 25% off for players who already own Elite: Dangerous, but ATM it's only 10% off in the store
3. Lifetime expansion pass is $195?... Really?...

It seems I'd get more value by just playing the base game and getting the expansion when it gets cheaper.

Integrated. Yeah, it sounds suspicious, but this got asked a lot today.

Ah, thank you very much. Wasn't about to scroll through 92 pages of content to have one simple question answered :p

If I may one more, then: anyone knows if the 130£ Lifetime Expansion Pass also gets the 10% loyalty discount?

A bit confused here...

MB stated that the lifetime expansion pass-holders, would not have access to the beta, unless they were a premium beta etc...
in my case I bought the Beta + The pass, (not the premium beta), However the FAQ states:

Do I also get to try the beta of Elite Dangerous: Horizons?
Yes. The Lifetime Expansion Pass also grants access to the beta of the Elite Dangerous: Horizons expansion season when it's available.

So which is it?

Game at release, beta access, starter ship, hangar and Arena commander playable now = $54
The rest is optional and in no way locks any part of the released game
Subscription has some benefits but does not conatin anything you cannot do without so a slightly skewed comparison.

I agree. People will start to realize that after the hype slows down. And let's not forget that people buying the expansion now will get it and ED for 50 euros, while us original owners, that paid 50 for the original, now have pay another 40 for the expansion, only one year later. So FaIR.

Not sure what you are talking about. I bought the original game for 50 and I now had to pay 40 for the expansion.

The only people not having to pay for this are the hardcore backers.

The only thing I see here is that you are looking into the future and say things that you have no clue at all to actually _know about_.

At this point I would call you a false prohet. :)

They specified planets will be gigantic and you will be able to go everywhere on them, I don't think there will be walls, probably not event between areas, I guess the only wall will be space, when you go about a certain altitude you will probably have to hit frame shift drive button to get into Orbit, it's not like your ship will suddenly reach orbital speeds, you will need your FSD for that

Probably something along those lines yes. I would imagine (not expect) that going from a planet to space will probably be seamless and controllable all the way. You will probably get an escape vector like you do now if you SC too close to a planet. Going from space to a planet though might not be like that and might require a little more 'automation'.

I am just bummed that we won't get to land on planets that have atmosphere's or pop into a gas giant any time soon. Looks like we are going to have to wait till 2017 for that.

I thought, it would be a year or more until we will see such stuff... and i always lamented about missing the lifetime beta access... Today i got two presents at once... I now own lifetime beta access and i am looking forward to get my fingers on all the new stuff... Thank you frontier, for early Xmas this year :). Keep up the awesome work!

Yes but SC is not even complete yet, only features are "arena commander" and the hangar, they don't have the Universe yet and it probably won't be released for years judging by their pace, that's why I'm avoiding Star Citizen altogether
