Anti-Aliasing in a Nutshell - Odyssey

AA_in_a_nutshell.png

I'm posting this hoping it helps Frontier to fix a potential root cause for what is being reported as "AntiAliasing not working as intended"

It seems that there's a "Microsoft Paint fill-like" effect being applied to several surfaces throughout Odyssey, which generates an indentation effect on surface edges.

This image was taken from a regular Habitat door at a Tourist settlement and it can be spotted in any/every one of them.

Bonus points if Frontier could also fix the invisible part of the door which is from inside the room and has been missing since day-1, so it doesn't have anything to do with any eventual culling applied by Frontier after Odyssey release.

Edit: fixed some typos...

The impression I get is that this isn't something where they just press a button to fix it.
I'm giving the "benefit of the doubt" to Frontier on this one because it has been pointed out by us players as an AntiAliasing issue... and FD might have been searching for the problem which may not actually be what's being reported.

One thing I find funny, though.... I've played many games from many developers and I have never came across such "Microsoft Paint fill-efect-like"... ever! Also this seems to be exclusivelly to Odyssey and couldn't find it in Horizons.

What is your Texture Filter Quality set to?

Frontier mentioned a new anti-aliasing module coming into the game in Q3 of last year. It has not been mentioned since.
This actually is the whole point of the original post... what have been reported (big maybe here) might not even be related to AntiAliasing itself but is also causing the heavy indentation effect.

There are several other edges and boundaries on the picture and they are just "fine"... it seems that something else is going on here, besides just AntiAliasing not working properly.

Just to make sure I'm not dismissing AA as being at fault and I do welcome any fixes Frontier makes towards improving AA.

Frontier as much as admitted that the current implementation of AA was poor. Hence the new module being develolped.

It is poor in EDO / EDO but probably more noticable in EDO due to the improved graphics in many areas.

No doubt the module will arrive eventually, until then it is just make the best possible with the settings given in-game. (which appear to be worsened if upscaling is also used as it allegedly relies on good AA implementation to produce a quality upscaled image.)
