So, I am returning to ED after a 3 month sabbatical. The road to Elite status is long an treacherous (and boring sometimes
) but IT MUST BE DONE. Anywho, I know this question has been asked and asked and asked (ad infinitum) but since the forums require a search query to be a minimum of 4 characters long, it makes it difficult to search for "API", I will ask it again.
Any news on the long awaited client side API? I am not (yet) a programmer but have been watching (and using) several amazing third party tools to enhance my Elite experience, but sadly some elusive options in those tools is still missing. Like the ability to build a space sim cockpit at home (or at the very least, a control box
). The problem is, these tools cannot query the client for basic info, such as landing gear or cargo scoop status, current fuel level, or even the next destination in my jump route. I dream of a panel on my desk that has a backlit landing gear button that springs to life when that little box in the lower right hand corner fills in, or sounds a tone when you try to jump with your scoop down. In my wildest dream, I am sitting in a custom built cockpit with a 56" curved LCD gaming display in front of me, a Thrustmaster Warthog in my hand, and two 21" touchscreen monitors on either side displaying my cockpit panels (If you gotta dream, dream BIG!
)
I know the old saying, wish in one hand and crap in the other, see which one fills up faster, but my hopes have been up ever since reading the "API Requirements thread" started waaaay back in Feb 2015. Unfortunately we have seen vary little from FD on this subject since then. When I saw that thread last year, I could HEAR the gears of the app devs collectively grinding away thinking of cool things to do with their apps. I felt the disturbance in the force as the hardware geeks and flight sim cockpit builders began to drool over their Teensys and I-PACs. Then a month passed. Then two. Then a year. And the sinking senation that we may never see a client side API has begun to solidify.
Again, I know this has been asked and asked, but come on FD! Any news at all? I liked the Engineers update and am looking forward to some of the 2.2 changes, but at least designate that pimply-faced youth from the local community college that sits in the back of the meeting room just to be near the amazing talent of Frontier Developments to look into an API. And more importantly, TELL US ABOUT IT, I BEG OF THEE!!
Cmdr OmegaPrime, signing off! See you out there, Commanders!
PS: PLEASE don't take this as criticism of FD and the amazing job they are doing with Elite! I'm not trying to start a flame war here. I'll play this game until I am old and gray with or without a client side API!
