Anyone still using DK2?

Works fine with both, hell -- better than ever. They'll presumably drop support for Oculus Home this year.

Hey mate, would you mind explaining how you're up and running?
Do I have to download and install the latest version of Oculus home, or can I just plug it in and play directly from steam?
I read somewhere that certain recent OH runtimes broke DK2 support, considering getting a used DK2 off eBay for ED,
not sure of the best way to get it working.
Thanks!!

I use DK2 with elite and works fine(aside from color banding issue which is suppose to be resloved in next elite patch).
I don't use steam. I downloaded oculus software directly from oculus site, and elite dirtectly from frontier.
Just dont run the oculus calibration.

Edit: Color banding seems resolved now but forgot to mention the awful black smearing in dark space when moving your head and generally bland colors.

Yep still using my DK2, I'm waiting for the price of the CV1 to come down a bit.

Runs perfectly fine on my media PC with extended HDMI/USB cables so I'm sitting on the sofa playing VR, love it.

Modest PC, i7 3770 & GTX970 runs it med/high details smooth, running direct from FD launcher as I didn't want to install the game again (prefer Steam's auto updates) I have 16gb Ram but it ran just fine when I had 8gb.

Of course I have Oculus store/drivers installed/running. No SteamVR as I got fed up with it launching every time I start a VR game even though I disabled the option!

Why would they drop support for oculus home? You can buy the game through them.

Hey man, you just have to install the Oculus drivers (Oculus Store) as long as it's running when you launch ED it will start in VR. You can launch from Steam or the FD launcher it doesn't matter and you don't need SteamVR installed, as mentioned I removed SteamVR as nothing seems to need it, at least not that I play.

Works very good, in fact, i prefer it to vive for ED.
I will not give DK2 away for another reason - native Alien isolation support which together with ED ist the best game ever made vor VR.

Drop DK2 support from Oculus home, they only promised it till the end of 2016 and I assume they'll have some version this year that disables support. Obnoxious I know, as I was perfectly happy playing with my DK2 with supersampling cranked up! It's hard to whine at Oculus too much tho since developer relations sent me a Touch kit and CV1 last month. After getting used to the annoyance of god rays, I'm quite enjoying it. The extra resolution helps, the built in headphones are far better a feature than you'd think, and the screen/lens tradeoffs seem more suited to Elite than the Vive I muck about with at work. Not sure if it QUITE justifies an upgrade from DK2 at the current price if you're not a raving VR maniac, but Touch DOES make the package.

There's tons of games and experiences on Steam that do, tho most are geared towards motion controllers. As mentioned, once Oculus drops DK2 support from Oculus Home, you'll still be able to use SteamVR to play Elite. By that point it might be a good idea to upgrade, perhaps some of the cheaper $300-400 Microsoft Holographic-branded HMDs launching from various manufacturers this year might be a good option for those wanting an upgrade and not interested in walking around the room swinging your arms around.

(that's a blast tho!)

Agreed on all counts! I miss Alien: Isolation a ton, I never got a chance to try it with supersampling set to 2.0, say. But I still remember the locations in the game in such a creepy way, as if they were spaces I actually was in. A surreal sensation, how I wish those devs had the support to polish their experience a bit and release it. They did such a brilliant job on mood, lighting, and modeling, ratcheting up the tension to unbearable levels. By the time you actually get to the alien, wow...

I still run a DK2.

Are Oculus Home upgrades "forced upgrades"? If they aren't forced, then the solution is to just never upgrade Oculus Home.

I am

Still loving it. Running at 1.5 and things look sweet!

Dead jealous of the 45 FPS with ATW on compared to DK2 37.5 but 37.5 is defo OK and I come from 120hz monitor

Been forced for a while, yeah. You could use the older runtimes like .5 or .8 of course before CV1 -- would those still work with Elite, anybody tried?

Hi Guys,

I'm considering buying a used DK2 to use with only ED. I'm a old guy at 50 with glasses so figure it would be smart for me to test out VR without spending too much.
Couple of questions:

1 Would I have to uninstall/reinstall the game to setup the DK2?
2 Are there any other items I'd have to purchase to get it up and running?
3 Would my graphics card be good enough to test with, GTX 750 TI? I ran the Oculus test and my system passed except for the graphics card. If I were to enjoy VR I would then upgrade the graphics card. The rest of my system is good, I7 6700K with 8GB, win 7 64bit.
4 What about extension cables etc? I'd hate to get it in only to wait for cables I'd have to order?
5 What is the life expectancy of the DK2? I'd hate to get it then ED stop supporting it very soon?

Oh I don't use steam if that matters. I bought the game ED Horizons directly from frontier. Also it's the only game I play currently.

Thanks so much for all your help!

If you can find one cheap - go for it. If not cheap, I'd stay away. Remember that it may have been abused or damaged, and will in all probability have hours of wear from sweaty neckbeards with unmentionable skin conditions :(

A good cleaning will be in order!

1: No - it'll work as soon as you plug it in, set it up, and tell Elite to use it.

I'd upgrade the GPU anyway. Any lag or freezing in VR will make you very ill very quickly.

If it isn't sold as a complete kit with cables, then totally forget it. Extensions are not recommended at all.

I doubt ED will stop supporting it. Oculus already stopped support and can mark the driver as unusable at any time. Hopefully they wont - but anything is possible.

If you do go for it - enjoy! VR is something you have to experience for yourself - some hate it, others are meh, but when done right it's just indescribable.

Thanks so much Asp Explorer, you alleviated many of my fears of setting this up. I'll give it a good cleaning for sure when I get one. I'm about to bid on Ebay now!

Thanks!!!

If you don't already have a console controller or a HOTAS, I'd suggest you pick one up too. Doesn't need to be too fancy - but in VR it'll save you lots of headaches.

Thanks for that. I happen to already have a hotas. That's one reason I asked about having to reinstall the game. I use voice attack and have spent a lot of time getting everything to work well. I wasn't looking forward to redoing all that if I got a DK2.

Last question, is there a huge difference between the DK2 and CV1 in ED? I'm not concerned with other games now, only ED.

Thanks!

I've tried the CV1 and the Vive (and some other stuff) - and can honestly say that I prefer the DK2. There are benefits to the newer gear, but for playing Elite, they are not big enough benefits to offset the cost.

The lenses in the CV1 are particularly disappointing, and the increased resolution is offset by needing a more powerful GPU.

The DK2 can be tweaked to mitigate some of the drawbacks, but things like the SDE, limited tracking and fogging up issues are just inherent to it's design.
