Why would they drop support for oculus home? You can buy the game through them.
Drop DK2 support from Oculus home, they only promised it till the end of 2016 and I assume they'll have some version this year that disables support. Obnoxious I know, as I was perfectly happy playing with my DK2 with supersampling cranked up! It's hard to whine at Oculus too much tho since developer relations sent me a Touch kit and CV1 last month. After getting used to the annoyance of god rays, I'm quite enjoying it. The extra resolution helps, the built in headphones are far better a feature than you'd think, and the screen/lens tradeoffs seem more suited to Elite than the Vive I muck about with at work. Not sure if it QUITE justifies an upgrade from DK2 at the current price if you're not a raving VR maniac, but Touch DOES make the package.
Hey man, you just have to install the Oculus drivers (Oculus Store) as long as it's running when you launch ED it will start in VR. You can launch from Steam or the FD launcher it doesn't matter and you don't need SteamVR installed, as mentioned I removed SteamVR as nothing seems to need it, at least not that I play.
There's tons of games and experiences on Steam that do, tho most are geared towards motion controllers. As mentioned, once Oculus drops DK2 support from Oculus Home, you'll still be able to use SteamVR to play Elite. By that point it might be a good idea to upgrade, perhaps some of the cheaper $300-400 Microsoft Holographic-branded HMDs launching from various manufacturers this year might be a good option for those wanting an upgrade and not interested in walking around the room swinging your arms around.
(that's a blast tho!)
Works very good, in fact, i prefer it to vive for ED.
I will not give DK2 away for another reason - native Alien isolation support which together with ED ist the best game ever made vor VR.
Agreed on all counts! I miss Alien: Isolation a ton, I never got a chance to try it with supersampling set to 2.0, say. But I still remember the locations in the game in such a creepy way, as if they were spaces I actually was in. A surreal sensation, how I wish those devs had the support to polish their experience a bit and release it. They did such a brilliant job on mood, lighting, and modeling, ratcheting up the tension to unbearable levels. By the time you actually get to the alien, wow...
