Anyone Using Track IR?

Some great advice here as usual.

I got sick of the cable.

TrackIR5 has to be the most revolutionary gaming peripheral that I have come across in my many years of gaming. I CANNOT live without it now and wish it was utilized in every FPS game that involves vehicle use. Oh GTAV why no TRackIR support! ;(

Fluid and intuitive real life head tracking motion is imperative for simulations like this. You don't realize it until you use it and then have it taken away. Being able to scan/pan and track an enemy during combat looking up and out your canopy gives you such a natural sense of position and direction that CANNOT be simulated in any other way, period. It really will improve your game in that respect.

Anyhow here's my DYI setup using the standard clip affixed to my headphones instead of a getting the additional trackclip pro with superfluous wiring.

BTW, and for someone that said there is no 6DOF? Track IR 5 has the ability to track more axis than people may be aware of and THIS is the added bonus!

You not only track up/down left/right, If you move your head "in" towards your hud, your view zooms in as if you were actually leaning forward. You can zoom in the same if you look at a panel and move your head closer to the panel it zooms into that panel a little bit more. Same with pulling your head back and zooming out.. It's fluid and dynamic mind you NOT an "on rails" type of zooming.

Also, if you are looking at the screen and "tilt" your head left or right, the view rotates cw and ccw to the same degree as your tilt. This zooming and tilting works seamlessly throughout all axis and is amazingly fluid.

This really is MORE than just "head tracking" for me and more like pseudo VR experience. It is that amazing for me and hope more people try it out. Once you do, I can guarantee you wont go back.

BTW, I also use VoiceAttack which I can't live without either. Esp. the macro voice commands for various power configs. Saying "Shields" or "Combat" to change pip config (full pips to shields, Combat config, defense config, etc) is awesome. Plus VA is spot on. I can whisper and be marginally clear and it picks up perfectly every time.

Anyhow, I use VA for binding the "center" key command for TrackIR.. Sometimes its necessary for me to say "center" and re center the view esp if you moved your chair or position a bit.. Easier than taking focus off to press a key.

Anyhow Take Care and thanks to this community for making Elite so awesome for me (an everyone else)! :)

I have a TrackIR 3. I did test out a TrackIR 1 & 2, the 3 was the first one to have a clip. The previous versions had foil stickers you glued to your head. Yes.

TrackIR is stupendous if you play flight sims, driving sims, and Flashpoint/Arma.

Does a game support TrackIR? I get that game. If it doesn't... then not so much.

The IR-emitting clip is more precise than the hat clip, and you can operate it in more varied lighting. Recent drivers and advances in the receiver have made TrackIR very accurate anyways, so the emitting clip isn't much of a bonus anymore. Also the cords are a pain. It's not that bad, but the clip is much easier.

Like I said earlier, got my TrackIR 4 today. Ebay vendor had one for 99 bucks new plus TrackIR ballcap included. That seemed to be a pretty good deal. A 5 with a ball cap would have run me close to 150.

Tried it today on Elite. Pretty cool I must say. I really like it. It's nice to turn it off using F9 when in the station though otherwise it plays hell with your Station Interface. I just turn it on before launch and it's good to go.

No calibration needed. The basic clip that came with it is good enough for me and no wires.

Where it really shines, though, is Flight Simulator X. OH MY GAWD..... That's a new game with a TrackIR. Using virtual cockpits and a hatswitch was a serious PITA. The track IR makes flying very natural like. turn the head to see the runway, let the plane follow your gaze.....Sweet.

Yes, definitely worth the cash. Especially the 4 with the discount. I don't know if the 5 is THAT much better, but, this is more than good enough for me.

I have an additional question on it; getting ready to decide if I want to get a TrackIR or not. Is it worthwhile even on a small screen? I play with a 17" monitor, seems like this would be more useful on a large screen or multiple screen setup.

Any thoughts?

Size doesn't matter in this case. :)
TrackIR would add experience even to mobile games if they were supported...

Have a play with the 'curves' Alec! You can generate a happy medium to your liking by making making the curve ignore small movements. You can do this on any axis individually. Makes a huge difference to the twitchyness!

Now sorted. I ended up just using the "smooth" curves for pitch and yaw, the "deadzone" curve for roll and have turned off X, Y and Z. Seems pretty darn perfect to me now.

I have started using my Android phone taped to my headset using FreePie and OpenTrack. Works really well and is FREE!

mine works fine, as long as it's dark, and the aircon is on full. I live in a bright, hot part of the planet, so when the window blinds are up, the tracking is awful, it just jumps all over the place and I need to turn it off. If you have a window behind you where you sit, you're going to need blinds/curtains for it to be closed. If i'm at all sweaty, this messes it up too, so I need to have the aircon on. Sometimes even if it's bright outside and the curtains are down, it'll still be a bit flaky. Works best at night for me.

When it works, it's great. Only thing I don't like about it is how gimpy it is having that pronged metal thing on my head as it does not fit flush with a cap or golf visor, nor is it configurable. I'd honestly prefer a sunglasses/google glass type clip or frame for it, (to attach the reflectors to 3D glasses for example) or to be able to detach the reflectors and put them onto the edge of the headphones and not have that silly "T clip" sat on top of my head, like I'm waiting for aliens to communicate.

The LED ear clip is too fragile to bother with from all reports, and also even more $$$.

I used track ir for a while but stopped using it as I got sick of looking at the roof of my ships interior every time I have a drink of my beer.. Which is often

I used EDtracker. Uses a three axis accelerometer/gyroscope. Built it myself for about £20 but you can buy prebuilt ones from the guys who put it together. Its excellent, changed the whole experience for the better. http://edtracker.org.uk/

If you are looking ONLY for ED, then edtracker is great. However, if you have other games that benefit from head tracking, then Track IR is the way to go. You can get a trackIR 4 for 2/3 the cost of a 5 and still provides excellent performance. Although I do get the "ganky" comment about the default clip.

There is no real elegant way to implement the system especially when dealing with the full 6 degrees of freedom, which ED only incorporates minimally (zoom in and out)

All my reservations, evaporate, however when I zoom in the screen and am able to look over the panel of my cessna and look down the nose of the aircraft. Beyond cool.

I disagree. EDtracker can be used on any game where you can map a standard axis, it works on driving sims etc the same as trackir does.

This is my DIY "standard" non pro clip attachment for my headset. I do not like caps and use my headset so this method allows me to slide the clip on/off my headset no differently than off a cap. Works awesome and I love it. No issues with directional lighting since I have dark surroundings and no windows. I really did not want the active led pro clip since I didn't need it. Also it is fragile from all the user input and breaks easily along with the additional USB cord that needs to be affixed to the headset. In that thread I also went into how I fixed the interference/glare from my prescription glasses via the sensor settings and mount angle while using camera view.

DIY - Attach Standard "Cap" TrackIR Clip (Non-Pro) to Headphones

And how do you like it? Worth the $150? Is it worth it to buy the Headset adapter too?
I treated myself to a TrackIR 5 with the LED track plus clip back in Feb. Like most people have said, once you try it and see how well it works you'll never go back. ED, Flight Sim X, Warthunder, whole new experiences. I was actually very surprised by just how well it worked. Just plug and play. And yea, you will have an advantage in combat.

Guys, just bought a track IR 4 from ebay, comes with the cap clip. Have no idea what to do with it, but I do know I hate wearing caps. Ideas?

Not sure if this is a TrackIR 5 thing alone and will work with the 4, but i use this device with my IR5. It fits onto the headband on my headset and works better than the cap thingy!

http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/02-products/product-TrackClip-PRO.html

That's what I have too.

But even with that, it flat-out doesn't work if the sun is shining. I'm not talking about direct sunshine on the clip or the camera - I even have the (non blackout) curtains drawn, but as soon as the sun comes out, the game starts spinning around and around like crazy. Other than buying blackout curtains/blinds, the only solution is to turn off head-tracking.
