April Alpha

I think it is perfectly fine that alpha lasts 5 times longer than what people paid for, and everyone else gets nothing, not even a spinning ship although the delivery date has passed months ago.
Really, nothing wrong with it.
Do it the right way, the Frontier way

Lol. I think your problem is you're viewing the alpha as a reward being held back from you rather than a stage of development. You're not being denied something you've paid for, the game is just developing at a slower than expected rate.

I really don´t have a problem, I totally agree, it is completely unnecessary to offer a basic "demo scenario" to backers who expected some download in January, February or March.
After all, there are youtube videos to watch other people who climbed the paywall flying around in spaceships.

I am eager to get my hands on the beta version but would be very disappointed if Frontier compromised any of their ethics to appease people who 'demanded' the game because they have already paid for it. Game development takes time, it is as simple as that. They are building this from scratch not using a 3rd party engine so just be patient as it will all be worth it in the end.

Personally, after watching the alpha videos (thanks Cmdr Kerrash Landing for you videos and get well soon as you are missed) I am amazed at how polished the game looks already.

After waiting 10 years for Duke Nukem, I think I can wait a few months to play the beta.

No rush Frontier, you are doing a fantastic job so far.

It would be a nice gesture from Frontier Games - because the Premium Beta is so much late from the estimate - to allow premium Beta subscribers to join the Alpha 4..

It'd be a nice gesture to the beta backers yes. But not a nice gesture so much to the alpha backers.

Why not? The premium Beta was supposed to be released a month after the Alpha phase according to the Kickstarter estimate. Also, it's not like the Alpha backers couldn't access the game anymore.. lol

It would be nice to have a big retail launch on Elites 30th birthday

In his recent interview with Scott Manley David Braben was asked when the official release would be and it was put to him about releasing the game to co-inside with the 30th anniversary of the original game would be a good idea and if this date was in Frontiers thinking. While David didn't deny this outright going by his body language and the way he laughed I'd suggest that this was their original plan.

for my personal experience (as amateur developer)
imho... it's too early for beta.

remember what is it the beta: testing the real game (the whole game, not only separate sections) preparing for the final official release

to have a beta we should have at least:

as space station: at least another kind over the corolis one + further updates (as the ships/cockpits).

until that time it will be always an alpha stage and nothing more.

In that same interview David did mention that there will be other types of space stations. He confirmed that the one from FE2 shaped a bit like a steering wheel will be in the game and said that there will be others. I think these other stations will appear in the next phase of the alpha. One thing that David did mention that kind of tickled my funny bone quite a bit was that at some point in the future, but not on initial release, the game will have inflatable space stations that we can purchase. :D

If anyone hasn't seen this interview with Scott Manley then please go and check it out because its really interesting.

Alpha 1 for single-player only, maybe, if anything.
However, I imagine Frontier would be averse to having the stressload on the Alpha servers increasing by what, 400%? 500%? during the final part of the Alpha.

I don't see the necessity for any early releases, myself. Personally I am fine with waiting. A longer than expected duration for alpha suggests a longer than expected duration for beta, so I think all backers will end up getting value for money. And at least the E: D waiting room is more entertaining than the SC waiting room. Although it does lack a fish tank.

Yeah, They paid £200 for exclusive Alpha access.
Won't be fair if they feel like they haven't got their monies worth.
It's not like they backed the game just to get the game made is it, they paid that money just so they could lord it up playing the Alpha while the scrub tiers below them have to scratch at the window watching them play.

I'm in Premium Beta, and I can wait... But I can understand peoples frustration at the delay, Alpha backers and those that went up much higher in the tiers on kickstarter got exactly what was promised to them (Alpha in Dec 2013) and three and a half months later we are still in Alpha, Now I think everyone knows that this delay is necessary after seeing the polish that has gone into the game and the hard work going in to make the game as near perfect as they can before Beta.. The question is do people really think that Frontier Developments were really so naive to believe that Alpha testing would last a month? ... I doubt it, they have been making games for a very long time .. which begs the question why the completely unrealistic estimates?

Well since Elite Dangerous uses p2p for the multiplayer and 32 player instances, all the stress load is under the players' network, and it doesn't make a difference how many players there are in the game..

The only reason I am starting to getting frustrated, is that £100 is a lot of money spent, and I might have just waited for the proper release at this pace..

exactly, I´d also ignore that alpha was supposed to last one month, from December to January according to Kickstarter. It now happens to last from December to May, or maybe June, who cares.

I can totally understand the entitlement to be part of this little exclusive paywall VIP club 5 times longer than planned, and everybody else getting nothing.
Without a doubt, the delivery schedule just has fairness written all over it.

Poor alpha backers. Please, please don´t upset them.

I would agree with giving the Beta backers access to Alpha one, just so they can learn to fly the thing, which would allow them to start testing beta straight away when it comes out .

Good. I'm glad we're in agreement. That would be a total waste to resources.

Except that the Alpha can barely handle the volume of players in the alpha currently, and you want to open it up to everyone? No, that's all but halt the normal development of the game while hotfixes for this demo is rolled out.

Like it or not, just waiting till it's ready is the fastest way to get into the game, without upgrading.

Ok so it's now April, and Alpha backers await the release of Travel & Trading.

How about an update from Frontier Developments on when we might reasonably hope to see Beta. Y'know, that Beta we thought we'd paid to see 3 months ago.

You must have some idea of when you hope things will happen, and not really think it's OK to just trot out the line "when it's ready".

Oh I think its ok...;)

I'm going to sound like a broken record here, but isn't ED using p2p networking and 32 player instances, meaning that there is no multiplayer dedicated servers on the game? Or is the Alpha using a dedicated server for the multiplayer?

If it takes till June or later to access the Premium Beta, it means that its going to be more than half year late, and the least Frontier Games could do is to offer the possibility to cancel our pledge and refund our money if we wish to do so..

Except that the game is still in alpha stage of development. Sad fact of the matter is that BETA is not ready.

Alpha and Beta aren't DLC demo's, they're development stages. I expect the Beta to be longer than a month too.

I think you may be misunderstanding the difference between backing a project and pre-ordering a game. ;)

Exactly. I also think it would be an impossible task to re-label
Alpha 1 as Gamma 1 and add it to every backer account as an immediate download.
