ANNOUNCEMENT April Update - Coming 23 April 2019

Seriously starting to regret spending money on this game now, cmon man. It's been 5 freking years
Seems a little entitled to be complaining that you only got five years out of the game.

The problem is though, that if the big reveal doesn't include atmospheric landings or walking around, then Elite Dangerous is dead, no-one will continue to support this game, or possibly even Frontier, at that point. I don't think Frontier comprehend this. I truly hope I am wrong.
I don't think you need to hope for that. :V

Fair enough, can't help you there. I have the two HOTAS parts at either end of a very old Compaq 101 keyboard with room for the mouse pad to sit right in front of the joystick so it's a pretty close fumble to find in the dark (even without any hair on it, lol) and the mouse wheel click is bound to my head look.

With only one pinkie 'shift' trigger on the X52, choice is disappointingly limited.

Funny story, my first HOTAS, a T-Flight X had 4 'shift' buttons and could do pretty much everything without the need to take your hands off the controls at all. Alas, it broke and I'd upgraded before the old one was replaced under warranty. The new one has more buttons, but they're annoyingly on the base.

Nothing worse than having to let go of the throttle to deploy landing gear, weapons, cargo scoop, select next target en-route, engage hyperspace, open either of the maps, engage silent running, blah, blah...

In short, the X52 Pro is a dud, and will be going back under warranty yet again.
I like the Oculus Rift setup with voice attack.

But that doesn't make sense, because this is just the opposite. It's one thing to say, "Only admirals are allowed in this briefing room." It's quite another thing to say, "Only recruits are allowed in this room - Admirals may not enter!"

I hope these are new worlds, because some of the current starter worlds are actually unique and beautiful, like Azeban(sp?) Orbital. If I'm locked out of these, well that would be a shame.
I agree. Maybe make it that if your elite status in the starter zones then you cant attack anyone, buy anything or mine etc.... I could see alot of PKing going on if its not locked out for some.

so wouldn't it make more sense to just roll these features along with the old docking computer into ship functions altogether? for one, it would finally settle the whole "docking computer or no docking computer" debate. it just seems like it would be a much more graceful fix than adding 1 or 2 module slots to every ship in the game. take ships that are already unbalanced in their class like the vulture for example. right now it has 1 C5, 1 C5 military, 1 C4, 1 C2 and 2 C1 slots. after this that number shifts to 4 C1 slots, further distancing it from it's small ship brethren. You could lock these new modules into only using the new modules, but then it becomes kind of like the planetary approach suite (why is this still a module?).

I Have to agree with you.

To be honest i never understood why the auto-docking and cruiser assist wasn't imbuilt in the first place. (those things aren't modules they are more like softwares)
Even cars in real life can park by itself nowadays and you have a ship that can make a quantum jump and can't auto-dock or do something basic as control the speed and auto exit supercruise? I mean really?

By making a module only the rookies are going to use it.

Everybody else will use the slot for any other reason really. (i love the supercruise assist but in no way i'm going to trade one slot for it)

Thanks :D

Erm, that was sarcasm though. I set a bind, I think, but barely use it :p
OH. Ok. I use my Flight Assist binding all the time. I use it to slide left or right to line up for docking. Or when over a pad on an outpost, at a dead stop, I disable it and then give a tiny burn of the top thruster to gently settle onto the pad. I wouldn't have to use assist off but I'm flying a spaceship, not an airplane. I let the computer keep me stable for the most part, but there are times when that can be counter productive which is why I use full manual in those instances.

Great improvements, as usual! Just a few questions:
1. If I already own a ship which has a Standard Docking Computer, how can I upgrade it to an Advanced one? By going to outfitting? Or will it be done automatically? It says everywhere that it will come in only new ships. Will I have to self-destruct and then rebuy it?
2. Will my ship also automatically get the additional slot?
Can't wait for the update to come out! Cheers ;)

I think the trick is to let them roll them out as modules. Then they put in extra slots. The after a while complain they should be in the ship so we get both features!! ;d

It's possible that FDev don't want to implement one or both of those but they don't want to cause a riot by saying so.

Tbh, I don't want space legs myself. I can't come up with a scenario where it doesn't slow me down in getting stuff done. Don't want to have to get up and walk to the back of my ship in order to access the FSS, tyvm, nor do I want what will amount to an extra cutscene between me and the mission board or market. It will get old very fast. I'm happy with ED being based in the pilot's chair.

Missing atmo landings is hard to excuse, but I hope it's because they want to do it really, really well, rather than half-**** it and it end up looking like Frontier.

Totally agree. Keep it simple; space legs and FPS shooting would kind of take away the simulation genre from the game. You are the pilot, inside your ship. You don't have to get out and fight. I'd also prefer atmospheric landings to be done properly; not a cheap effect, but rather aerodynamic simulation, weather, temperature, etc... Perhaps they could start with the moons, which don't have any water or vegetation.

2. Yes

If you watch the early dev diaries it seems more likely they'll be introducing gas giants before populated atmospheric planets, even if they only have non-sentient flora and fauna. Giants have been discussed in more detail and we've already seen cloud based engine video that hasn't materialised in-game yet.

There are also clips of Sandro describing ship boarding parties, which need legs.

I am not saying we shouldn't have space legs. I'm just saying that if they introduce FPS shooting, it would kind of ruin the definition of the game.

Valid points but I found the lateral and vertical thrusters to offer a greater level of control. I did try using a brief FA OFF when landing on higher gravity planets instead of downward thrust to avoid hitting the deck too hard. It was an ok solution but now I've probably just gotten a bunch of lazy bad habits, as you do.

If I had to pass my driving test again nearly 30 years on I'd probs fail that too, lol :p

I'm not sure a half way measure would be feasible. Ok, let us get up and walk around but what are the murder hobos gonna do if they see you in a station, attempt to ram you to death? No, if we get legs but not some kind of defensive sidearm the forums will be inundated by tsunamis of salt on a biblical scale.

It will be hilarious to see stations unleash instagib on no-fire-zone offenders... :D

Yay for updates !
It all sounds good.
The only thing that raised my eyebrow was beginner zones. My curiosity scratches at the door wondering what's in there, but I won't allowed in. Lol.

Just legs?

I do wish frontier would LIST the bug fixes like the old days, how do we know what's fixes and what's not.

I had hoped that Suri b the elite down time till 2020 they would focus solely on bug fixing to bring the game right up to speed, I would prefer that than new content right now...?!

Also Devs please please buff the exploring screens and usability, more info, better understanding of what is on planets i.e #other have you figured out what that is yet as if it's a bug then was fix it, as it's not showing anywhere on planets or in the nav panel. Also the zooming in on pla ets info panel why do you have to zoom twice to see the Info?? Thats another bug.

Now not having players the game for some of these very reasons I do hope they have been address on your bug fix list of which there is not one to read for players.??
