Are hull reinforcement packages and armour pointless?

because that's the way the game mechanic works.
some hits just pierce through the armour and hit the modules, without hurting the structual integrity (hull) much.

but i have to admit: it doesn't make much sense (unless the hits hit a hole that was previously punched)

It makes sense. A lot of targets are outside ie engines sensors weapons shield unit. Others like powerplant drive have a hp, lets say 200hp for powerplant. 30 of those hp are hull (you only need to make a hole once) the other 170 the powerplant.

Perfect sense.

What makes no sense to me is that the powerplant, which is the critical element of the ship, is also
the weak point of it.

Besides, a fusion reactor should not explode (not enough fuel in the reactor at any time,
and any breach to the containement vessel would just vent/cool the plasma, stopping reactions).

What should happen in my opinion is that damage to the plant should have a change to provoque a
breach => plasma loss => ship temp up => plant repair system activate / reboot of powerplant.
Also add backup power for each powerplant modules that provide some power in (MW * s = MJ, like capacitor,
but larger. then you have survive on it during the reboot). I think that would be awesome. With some red lights in cockpit please :)
