Are mining Hotspots actually Coldspots?

I don't understand how the mining hotspots work. I've traveled to several of them and I just find lepodite ,coltan very rarely osmium or silver in very small amounts. Its just an exercise in wasting prospector limpets. Do the rings run out and revert to basically garbage? I mined in Delkar a few days before the type 8 patch and was getting pretty good osmium, plat, painite. Wasn't even in a hotspot! Now its just a bunch of trash!

Sounds like you don't even understand the basics of mining. Hotspots increase (slightly) the percentages of the stuff that's present in the ring. If you are at a crap ring, guess what? You get slightly elevated crap.

Last I know of everything gets replenished on the Thursday tic... So yeah, if you go mining Monday Tuesday and Wednesday the hot spots will feel a little weak cause that's where a lot of miners go. at that point you are better off dropping in away from the center of the hot spot and be more likely to mine in areas that haven't been touched yet. If that info has changed maybe someone will update me. But also, When you see glowing rocks, that doesn't necessarily mean Core, they also glow from subsurface deposits (subsurface can bring in almost as much as cores, but you should really do them in FA-Off to make it easier to tether to the SSD point)... and High-yield Laser mining has nothing to do with the glowing rocks. But when you do see areas with multiple glowing rocks it does often mean you will find some nice non-glowing rocks with high-yield for laser mining close by.

Edit:
Also having multiple friends Prospect the rocks will increase the rocks yield... and one more thing it use to be that mining in the Hazrez will also increase the rocks yield, but I usually only do that to have the challenge of fighting NPC at the same time as mining. So if you do that make sure to mount a Point-Defense on the underside of your ship to defend from Hatch Breaker limpets.

Indeed! Thank you for the tutorial link.

Thank you for the reply and your insights into the mining mechanics!

I've not mined in a while. Last time I did there had been some changes since the time prior to that. I visited numerous "hot spots" and found precisely NONE of the "hot" material, despite checking out dozens and dozens of asteroids. Needless to say I was in Pristine Metallic rings, but found nothing in an hour of prospecting on a number of occasions. The only place I've had reliable success with certain materials, was the overlapping double hot-spots, but I read that they were changed to yield less some time back.

Not done any laser mining in ages, not really compelled to go back to it either and I use to bloody love some relaxing mining for an hour or so.

Btw: I read elsewhere that depleted asteroids usually refresh after a couple of hours, not on the Thursday tick. Did something change? As mentioned, not done mining in a while, other than a quick "I'm here for MATERIALS" run in a random location. That went pretty well... for raw materials, didn't care about anything else.

Hearing you say that does sound very familiar... I could have been confusing the Thursday tick with something else... I remember telling myself to stop using Supercruise Assist to avoid dropping in on the same repeated spot and getting dead rocks... I was mining a lot mor frequently back then.

That depends on what you were mining. In some rings the hotspot material might only be found cores.

I’ve just been mining the last couple of days trying a T8 as a miner (I quite like it btw). I’ve found cores quite rare, saw quite a few yesterday before work but none last night and only 1 in my quick blast this morning. Do cores get refreshed on the Thursday tick? I was in an double-overlapping platinum hotspot in a pristine ring

I’d never really tried core mining before but it’s quite fun.

An exploded core will appear as exploded for everyone visiting the ring - no matter the mode. So if you see an exploded core, you know someone was there rather recently.
Cores are normal to be rare - usually it's like 30 to 50 km between cores, with some rather rare occurrences like finding 2 cores in like 10km

Laser mined asteroids refresh at 2 hours
Exploded Cores iirc refresh around 6-7 days, but i dont remember it being tied to the Thursday tick.

I think I really like the T-8 too and want to spend a bit more time in it. Right now, I have been absolutely burning myself out trying to re-engineer a lot of my bad built ships over 4 accounts because I've been afraid that they might nerf the materials increase. I know it's not good to grind that hard but I get a little OCD about things.

I have several mining ships for different moods. My pure laser mining ships make me feel 'easily-productive' because I know I can always drop into the Delkar 7-a ring and fully load up a couple hundred tons of Osmium, Panite, Platinum etc...
For Cores I usually only find 1-4 in an hour, So I only go Core hunting in very nimble ships like thew Challenger (and maybe now the T-8) so I can Hoon the field and mine at the same time. The Challenger only has 64T cargo space when fully shielded, but that's enough space for the 4 cores that I could get anyway (plus it has room for all the other mining tool plus guns).
But my favorite mining ship right now is my 7 laser Anaconda because unlike the Corvette and Cutter (all with 3 normal medium lasers and 4 of the Tech Broker modified size 1 lasers, that combo will strip rocks in about 10 seconds without draining the (engineered) distributor or overheating), the Anaconda has that 8th hardpoint for the Sub Surface Displacement missiles and the SSD is by far my favorite way to mine. There are lot's of rocks with SSD deposits available and it's very engaging to have to keep a lock on my tether point in FA-off, not crash into other nearby rocks, monitor the drilling depth, and monitor the percentage of material left so I'm not wasting ammo. To me it is the most rewarding way to mine to feel like you're doing something skillful and not having wasted time.

About the Thursday thing, I think Northpin has the correct info. And I think that's what started me dropping into rings hotspots manually without Supercruise assist a long time ago to avoid dropping into 'used' areas.

Definitely agree that subsurface mining is the most fun and is the hardest so most rewarding way to mine. Core cracking is fun but not very difficult once you’ve got the hang of it.

The T8 makes a good miner, 192tn cargo with 3 class 5 collectors and shield. It has enough hard points to do laser, surface, subsurface and cores and is nimble enough to get into the cores for the surface bits revealed.

I’d imagine an Anaconda set up for laser mining is probably the best credits/hr way to mine provided you can offload that much in one drop
