Are probes going to use another module slot limiting explorers

My Beluga Explorer is armed - two beams, 3 slugged PA’s, and makes for an impressive combat ship, despite being built to explore. I get WHY people don’t take weapons - it’s all about how far they can jump at one time. Not what I think of when it comes to the unknown, but I did grow up on Star Trek, so I expect to find that not everything out there wants to be my friend.

I am pretty sure existing scanners like DSS are not going to change, we will just get extra probe launchers that will give us aditional info about what is on the surface or the rings. Such device only makes sense if it is installed in the hardpoints, after all it is to be aimed and shot (shoot? damn english...) :)

And other that neutron stars and some random pvp commanders prolly lost in space, what other unfriendly stuff have you found?

Possibly. They could mitigate this by combining the discovery and planetary scanner though, although they probably won't.

Exploration ships will most likely get specific module slots like combat ships and passenger ships.

This would be Asp Explorer, and Diamond Back Explorer, exclusively. They are the only two dedicated exploration ships. But I would not assume anything.

Well, apart from maybe Anaconda also getting one of these magical slots because of course it will. Never mind, then.

Frontier's problem is "there's a module for that" mentality that is creating endless new modules; we have module proliferation in a game with ships that do not have fluid internals. If the DSS can now magically control probes, why the hell do we have eleventy limpet controllers given they do basically the same thing?

I believe Frontier probably need to have universal modules, than can accomodate a number of tasks, rather than endless module proliferation. This allows for considerable customisation, still consumes otherwise flexible module bays, but doesn't create a TARDIS situation, of endless specialised slots because that's become convenient.

Exactly. Not only will the on tonne DSS module, that already has a defined function, be able to control probes at supercruise distances. It will be able to control multiple probes, which an equivalent limpet controller would need to take a slot at least 32 tonnes.

It's okay; i'm sure we'll be able to deploy multiple prospector limpets at relativistic speeds whilst cruising above a planet's rings from the equivalent 2 ton module. Right? Yes? .. don't look at me like that.

I love frontier but they desperately need to make some decisions about module proliferation because this just opens up so many questions about prior decisions given that, really, it's just hilariously convenient that a DSS can drive 'probes' which will be the functional equivalent of limpets. I've given up asking for consistent mechanics though; that way lies true madness, i'd just settle for some consolidation.

I think there is a misunderstanding somewhere in that sentence.. the scanning probes are not controlled after being fired.. oh, it is the same as with the current limpets, so all good! :p

Few more posts and we will be arguing about the feature that only exist as a concept, and even it's creators are not sure how exactly it is going to work - welcome to FF :D

Probe Uranus.

Because the thread would be incomplete without it.
