Python? Hell yeah it's versatile as can be. With the right load out, there isn't much it can't do.

You Need a ship with a good number of Utility Points because what mainly matters is shield Booster with restistance.

I fly the python and the annaconda. Both are Killers. The Python for ist a lone is general better for fighting but the anaconda with the fighter is a flying tank where you have the freedom to fight in a super light wight agil fighter which gives you the best of both worlds in a package. And additional Crew Audio. Last made me move zto the conda because what is a Crew good for if you can't use it anywhere ina python?

Ok, best multipurpose ship in the game is the Cobra Mk4. Its got a cheap rebuy and can do anything... well, its a bit sub-par for combat, and it needs some engineer love, but trust me, once you go CM4, you'll never go back ;)
