As an explorer, why should I get a Fleet Carrier?

Its pretty nice exploring in your Fleet Carrier. You can go where nobody has gone before (except cheaters.... interesting to see how many systems hundreds of LY from their nearest neighbour are already tagged by cheaters... and quite frustrating).
I recall reading that back when the jump range cheat worked, it was capped at 100 ly. So if you find some tags at distances beyond that, those were made with carriers, not trainers and whatnot. There was quite a rush when carriers first came out, after all.

I like mining and I like the peace and quiet you get out in the black, so for me a moderately equipped carrier is a great asset.

Check out my carrier, assets and cargo fully visible, link in sig.

Well, we are on dangerous grounds here in terms of forum rules, but for a long while it was not capped and FD were not taking action (whether they were gathering telemetry before whacking people or whether they just couldn't detect nobody knows) so people were jumping any distance with impunity. It was only much later, after FD started issuing bans, that the developers of the program put a soft limit on the jump range and warned people if they jumped further they could be detected and banned.

Couple of questions for FC owners as I've just purchased my first and want to prep for a trip:

1. how do I buy fuel for the FC? Obviously can't dock at a station :)
2. how do i buy/activate UC module?

The Pilots Manual isn't the most helpful document....

Thanks in advance,
Cmdr A

You buy Tritium at refineries, using your T9 or Cutter, preferable a dedicated tanker with cargo racks only :)
You may set a buy order at your FC to sell it to yourself... Stupid, but much faster than using the 'transfer' button in your right hand inventory tab.

To (un)install services you need to be in a carrier admin system. Use Inara to find your nearest... You can suspend temporarily unneeded services everywhere to lower your weekly upkeep...

Have fun with your new toy :)

Thanks Cmdr, time to transfer a freight carrier to my FC....

For the Carrier Admin; I presume I have to dock at the station in a normal ship and use the Carrier Admin facility while docked?

Further to the useful info from Cmdr Raumkraut, this may help other newbie FC owners...

1. Once you've purchased the beastie, you have to add funds to it through the Carrier Management panel
2. Once you've added funds, you can purchase non-standard modules such as UC, Shipyard etc
3. You can do this from the RH panel of your ship while in a Carrier Admin system, no need to be docked to station or to FC, you'll have a new menu for Carrier Management
