Asteroid Cores Found in Belts

Earlier today, u/SpanningTheBlack posted a screenshot of a asteroid in a belt cluster with a Painite core on the r/EliteMiners subreddit:

Naturally, this got me curious. With belt clusters being as sparsely populated as they are, it should not be hard to find the same asteroid with a core again when it regenerates a few days after getting blown up. If core asteroids are common enough in belt clusters, this could possibly be a very reliable and efficient way to find asteroid cores.

So, I did a bit of investigating. Starting in my home system, I went to my local pristine metal rich belt, which has 8 clusters. I was rather surprised to find a total of 3 Rhodplumsite cores. Heading to a neighbouring system with 7 pristine metallic belt clusters, I was further surprised to find an additional Rhodplumsite core and 2 Painite cores.

Unfortunately, I did not have the time to go to another system and scan more belt clusters. However with the limited information I have, I can draw a few initial conclusions:
  1. ~40% of belt clusters will have a asteroid with a core
  2. Belt clusters with fewer asteroids (all of the ones I found had exactly 6) will have exactly 1 asteroid that lights up on the pulse wave scanner but will not have a core
  3. Belt clusters with more asteroids (the ones I found had 10-12) will have 2 asteroids that light up on the pulse wave scanner, but only 1 will have a core
Not only does it seem like asteroid cores are quite common inside belt clusters, it also appears that we can determine AT A GLANCE whether or not a belt cluster will contain an asteroid core without using the pulse wave scanner.

Of course, this still needs a lot more information to determine if these hold true, so I would ask for anyone reading this to spend an hour or two scanning belt clusters for asteroid cores and keeping track of the number clusters you scan, the number of cores you find, and the number of asteroids in the clusters that you do/do not find cores in. Feel free to bring seismic charges with you and/or record the exact locations of each core for future use. I would really appreciate it if you would reply to this thread the information you collect. You shouldn't need to post exact system-belt-cluster information (it's OK to keep trade secrets), although I may ask for a list of systems that were searched to be sure that the data being collected is not duplicated.

Edit: The cores will only spawn once you get within a certain range of the belt cluster, I am still trying to figure out what that range is

An encouraging post. One might think that everyone will want to check this out now and cash in while it lasts. It was always the intention of FD (Sandro Sammarco) to have "gold rushes" and some of these might be, especially close to a well-paying space port.

I used to mine painite in belts all the time. When someone said there's nothing there, I thought maybe they changed it.

People have been mining cores in belts since the mining update wen't live. Thought it was common knowledge.

Someone also mentioned that core roids are the only ones that rotate in belts. Personally I stick to hotspots, it isn't really difficult to find plenty of core roids if you use the double pulse technique.

"Thought it was common knowledge." Not everyone is as all-wise and understanding as you, 777. Some concentrate on other aspects and don't have time to comprehend everything about this game.

It would be helpful to describe or link to this "double pulse technique" that you speak of.
