Hello Granite, we have spoken a few times before. Great new video by the way.....
.
As you may recall, I have been in the games/graphics business for nearly 20 years now so have a rough idea about how these things go together.........there is a very important two words that need to be understood on this topic.......I forget who said them, it was a Higher Up at FD......but they mentioned "visual consistency" across the platforms.....and that, is it.....game over.
.
The translation of which is, they don't want the PC version looking too different to the Xbox version, so If the Xbox can't do it, I'm afraid that gets passed on to the PC. People might think I am suggesting conspiracy between FD and Microsoft to make the brick look good.....but it is more simple than that, I believe........It is a nightmare for a developer to maintain multiple versions of the same assets. If you want the "best" out of all platforms then the graphics need to be set up to the strengths of those systems. And the abilities of the XBone vs a modern high end graphics card, are large.........so it is a lot easier to knock everything back to a more basic level so that you can practically send the same assets to both systems...........
.
When I saw the phrase "visual consistency" mentioned by one of the lead developers, I knew this wasn't going to get better any time soon......maybe when the Xbtwo comes out.
.
I am still a touch baffled as to why we don't have detail sliders that can load in higher LOD models for high end PCs. As we have seen before, there is no major graphical difference between low and ultra settings.....(not played for a while maybe that has changed).......so the reason why they have not added this feature maybe does lend weight to a "not make the Xbone look bad" argument.......A clear statement from the Devs would soon clear this up.
.
Maybe we should all be thankful they didn't cut it to the core so that Horizons would run on the Mac.

This is unacceptable if it's true. Elite Dangerous was funded by the PC crowd and to now have the graphics dumbed down is beyond a joke. If my crap laptop could run it fine then I'm not sure what kind of PC Braben wants his games to run on as my laptop is 3 years old with 4 gb ram, intel integrated graphics along with an i5 processor.

So the PC crowd funded it and now it's being developed for Xbox and the PC users will get whatever scraps FD decide to throw us?

I agree 100%. Visual Consistency across platforms is a very bad idea.

It cannot be achieved anyway. Even in it's primitive state, the XB1 is not able to render the game viably in 4k resolutions today.

It struggle at 1080p at times as well.

Of course it can.

You cater for the lowest common denominator.

Except we can play this game in 4k with 4k textures. I think they even have 8k textures, so the argumnent doesn't stand.

So why is everybody then complaining that asteroid fields etc etc look like a dogs breakfast? Are you saying that you don't have this issue as contained in the OP?

Not only that but I don't own Horizons. <snip> I couldn't give a crap about xbox players and it's not "low end" pc's and if it is, who the hell is running a 486 these days and why are they being catered for,Hey everyone, here's a really great looking game that we're going to PR the crap out of on its visuals then later on when you've all bought it, we'll downgrade the graphics massively so we can sell more to xbox. ED is now $ED$. How is the screen shot, a few pages back, looking exactly the same between low graphics and ultra settings? So we now have "Xbox Setting" and that's it?Like I said, my crappy old laptop ran ED on launch day fine for the most part and we all paid for a game that came with these graphics only to now have them taken away when we never had an issue with them. Sorry...no, I'm not sorry I'm mad lol. They have just ripped us off - they sold the game on it's graphics and now they take them away and keep making them worse?Where are our settings to put back the game how we bought it? I'll decide thank you on what graphics I'll run my game at and If I want to tun it at 15 FPS I'LL make that choice. That's why you have LOW settings and HIGH settings so people on crap PC's can still play the game.So can I have the game I paid for back, please?

yep, why bother beyond pew pew, if the whole galaxy looks the same with isotropic gameplay & dumbed down blandness ?

I downloaded Oolite again a few days ago as it's more varied and diverse in many respects and just more... Elite

I don't think XBOX is to blame.

XBone is more powerful than most middle and low level PC players are using to play Elite.

They had a major stutter problem. I for one I'm glad it's gone. Graphics did suffer though, things look poor now compare to back then, a bit sad really.

I agree FD was already making optimizations to the Rings before the XBOX was ever involved. Bounty Hunting in RES is one of my favorite activities, I hope FD will be able to get it back the original level without studding they had before. Smooth game play is King, Graphics are Queen.

Well, I won't speculate about WHY the overoptimalization takes place, I just want to chime in with a big thank you to FD, as I apparently threw 1000 bucks out of the window when I bought a new PC for Elite, during the Summer hype, because as I found out, I can now run Elite on Ultra 1080p on my OLD machine. :D

So now, as a die-hard PC gamer and console hater, I'll be praying Microsoft comes with the new XBox as soon as possible to allow us on PC have some slight improvements.

Hey! Maybe two years from now, we'll be allowed to have a proper antialiasing! Wouldn't that be awesome?

For those that have come into Elite after the downgrade...a look back to how it looked for the first six months after retail...

No official response I know of.
Just vague statement about "small sacrifices" for better optimalization on slower machines.

Nobody explained why Max. details look worse, now, than low details looked at the launch, though.

I just loaded up the single player combat training demo. The Wolfpack tutorial is set in an ice ring and it looks pretty good ....

Just a quick note in support of all the well presented and mature posts here regarding the graphics downgrade.
I would sincerely hope that the community manager or devs respond...

That's because its running on version 1.0, using the old volumetric dust. 1.0 was the release version.
