Asymmetrical Ship Designs

Every ship in the game is extremely symmetrical in design (at the very least from left to right of fuselage).

It’s time for some asymmetrical designs, even if these ships may never make the coveted (and absent) atmospheric landings. Even better these ships could make atmospheric landings but had flip or roll to an orientation that precluded line of sight flight and forced the player to conduct an instrumental atmospheric breaking maneuver (a la Apollo 11).

Either way, we need new ships that don’t follow the current Fdev ship design.

The T-10 looks asymmetric, although the weapons are symmetrically placed.

I think the issue is more Disney's lawyers, as soon as something asymmetric gets released comparisons to a certain freighter will ensue....

FDev had to change the description of one of the PS Achievements as it quoted from Star Wars....

The consistently symmetric design in the ships is definitive proof atmospheric flight is being planned and will be implemented at some point in the future.
centre of gravity affects manoeuvrability. if you're asymmetric, your centre of gravity moves and you become unbalanced
You don't need symmetry if atmospheric entry is done in FSD mode. Our ships are also big bricks with powerful thrusters that can compensate any asymmetry with Flight Assist so I don't see any issue in this matter.

Symmetrical designs tend to distribute frame stresses more evenly, which given the G forces high-thrust maneuvers deliver is a serious consideration. I have no idea what stresses the FSD jumps generate, but compressing space along a specific ship's axis is definitely not stress-free, as evidenced by ship's integrity diminishing with each jump. Asymms are fine for small low-to-zero g orbitals (e.g. outposts) but note that the large stations are also symmetrical along at least one axis, for similar reasons, the stresses of rotation have to be managed.

Which is a complete non issue with our current ships capabilities. Ships in ED are using intelligent vectored thrusters, those thrusters are capable of generating an immense amount of thrust. Fuel consumption also has no correlation to thrust output.

The above means quite a few things... Devs painted themselves into a corner regarding interesting or difficult atmospheric flight, these ships are capable of handling atmospheric flight with ease.

Asymmetric flight would not be an issue, even in an atmosphere with high levels of parasitic drag.

T9 re-entry.
