[ATT] A.I. programer

The new rules prevent posting a Devs name in a thread title (if I read it correctly) but, the A.I. programer, coder, master of the computer speak or whatever you call it, you all know who she is, post regularly, very professionally, and with clear informative (without giving away the farm) "news" on what she is working on, what bugs are particularly troublesome and more.

I'm not saying other devs don't do this nor am I saying I expect or am entitled to these types of posts or that the devs are required to do so. What I am saying is that each time I open up a dev tracker to see what the devs, those that actually know, have to say, it's been fantastic reading her posts. I know what she's been working on, kinda know how it's going (even items "finished" on occasion), get some insight into an extremely interesting part of developement and despite being baited, I've never read or seen her lose her cool. I bet the cat has ran for cover a few times and that if the swear filter had ears it would have melted on occasion but, not that'd we know of on here.

Again, let me be clear, I'm not knocking the other devs that post, all dev posts are appreciated but, again, you know who, even posts on weekends on occasion and if anyone should ask me what's going on with the A.I. in ED I can easily, with some detail, say what she's been working on, what's sorted out and what's taking a hammering in hopes of making it into 1.2. And that is awesome. I realize that not every dev has time (no knock on the A.I. gal, compiling code and all that :p ) to post or in that kind of detail but, it sure is awesome when they do.

So, to whom I'll call SarA.I. (catchy no?) Thanks, your posts and hard work are greatly appreciated. :D

[EDIT] I'm not shy when I think somethings wrong so, I might as well not be when I think something is good.

And she is a perfect example of why we need, yes need, a dev diary/ blog/ video on a regular basis rather than the newsletters which have filler material of little interest. I know creating this interaction would be time consuming on top of their schedule but it would bring FD and the players a lot closer together. Communication is key as we move forward, I hope the other Devs follow her example. Whoever she is ;)

Yes, 'she who must not be named' does an excellent job on the AI in this game.
Her feedback is always welcome.
Whoever she is.

I'm always checking those third part sites that highlight the dev posts and I wholeheartedly agree. The guy at the top could take a lesson from SarA.I. (I love that) about keeping us a bit more in the loop.

If I didn't like the nick you coined I'd have called her the Newsletter. I'm more interested in her posts than the weekly fluff.

+1 from me too

Yep, I know who you mean OP, and you're right, she is informative, invested and I really enjoy reading her posts. Not sure what the thinking is behind not naming the Dev's, to be honest these forums have seemed a lot less democratic of late.

wait, what, where is the dev tracker hiding? i've been following the icons for each thread, would love a proper dev tracker page!

Wait, hold on, you can't mention developers by name on the forums now? How does that even- But their names are right- What?!

there is a rather handy "unofficial tracker" RSS feed that I found posted here some while back. Great way to keep track of all the interesting posts without trawling the forums 24*7

http://www.miggy.org/games/elite-dangerous/devtracker/ed-dev-posts.rss - if whoever created this is out there: thanks, this feed is a great resource :)

I think the difference is one person commenting on a particular area of responsibility (which might be relatively straightforward in terms of what needs to be done, when it will be done), vs somebody else with more overall responsibility (and many things to juggle, which may often have competing demands). The latter can't speak as freely as their path is more subject to change, and might be wary of being seen to make promises - intentionally or otherwise - that they later can't keep. Either that or just personal style..

I love the amount of effort going into the AI ships, and enjoy reading about the little tweaks. It's refreshing. I'm also quite impressed how forthcoming the sound guys are too.. it's always nice to hear what people are up to- even with the inevitable semi-literate whinging that this always attracts.

This is a big, complex and very unfinished game, and a lot of us get a kick out of hearing about some of the thought processes and tweaks, whether we agree with them or not. Yeah, there are a lot of rough edges right now, but it's still tons of fun, there's nothing else quite like ED out there right now :)

True. But there's a deluge of space sim games coming from a variety of angles so FD need to keep on their toes to maintain the jump they have ahead of them and the quality. And a big step is the transparency some of the Devs give us.

Let it rain space sims. Let some of them be good, too. There has been a bit of a drought of fun ones for a few years (and no, I don't include the click-to-move world of Excel vs Excel). Bring it on!

(I never really got on with the X series, especially when buggy AI allies were more dangerous than enemies.)

Of course I agree that FD need to have at it and keep improving this game, you're dead right. The fact that I am having fun right now doesn't mean that I'm not selflessly prepared to enjoy it even more in the future, when they fix some of what's broken, and add some of what's missing.

Yeah, i love reading SarA.I posts (great nickname, hope she isnt offended by it) that lass certainly knows whats she's doing, a real credit to the team. I can see where your coming from regarding the disclosure of information from other members of the team though. Im pretty sure i remember her mentioning working on other areas as well as the recent AI work that she has been talking to us about, if my memory has it right, that would support your thinking.

I did some AI on game mod a few years ago and its tough work, you have to make sure there are no conflicting behaviours because that's when the AI spaz out and do strange things, for each action a AI can do it gets exponentially harder to avoid conflictions, kudos to the ED AI.

Good post - not sure why your rep's so bad - have increased it a notch.

Here's the latest quote from SarA.I.'s doppelganger:

"Yes, I've fixed all the orientation problems at the entrance and am trying to get everything ready for V1.2. Feels like I've been fixing a lot of issues, some pretty major ones, the most serious (I feel) being ramming. Oh, and the Docking Computer does use the same code as AI docking."

Even if you haven't followed her posts, you'll have a pretty good idea of what is going on with the A.I. right now. Hope I'm not getting her in trouble but, in just a simple post we know a few things:

1. She's been augmenting the A.I.
2. All the orientation issues have been addressed.
3. Major ramming issue dealt with.
4. The docking computer uses the same code as the A.I., so, any improvement to the A.I. improves the use of a docking computer.
5. She's working her rear off trying to get it all ready for 1.2.

Sounds good to me. No mystery, drama or ambiguity. Say wheat.

I cannot find the thread to quote the post I am thinking of, but it's also good to see a great sense of humour in terms of hinting just how evil she could make the AI if she really wanted to .... something about AI pilots avoiding firing arcs, and basically capable of wiping the floor with the rest of us, just through standard game mechanics .... mWAHahahahaaa...

:)
