Horizons Attack ship abandoned on a planet -- salvage options?

Newly commissioned Commander here, been flying not quite two weeks, got my Pathfinder rank, made friends with a couple of Engineers, harvested a few Meta-Alloys, decide it's time to try some surface mining for elements, mats, whatever. I followed an SRV scan trace that looked to be promising, came across a ship in the far distance. Thinking of salvage, I motored up to the supposed wreck, found it to be a fully intact Vulture class hulk from a local Defense Force, parked in the middle of nowhere. Me in the SRV, it with cannons bigger than my buggy no doubt, I didn't immediately start cutting it up for scrap, but decided to research salvage rules first. Couldn't find any at all, just some hints in tutorials and forum posts. I'm wondering what my options are.

There was no activity from the Vulture, but since for now I'm playing Solo, I was wary of any game-generated/NPC response if I attacked the apparent orphan. Any ideas, comments, suggestions?

If you open up the camera and take a look there will have been a pilot chilling out in the Vulture, just waiting for you to do something naughty.

These are often traps actually, you can have a system defence ship sitting on the surface right next to a bunch of wanted skimmers (different faction). Killing the wanted skimmers provokes the security ship into killing you. I don’t see the logic here, surely it should be the same rules as bounty hunting.

Too much of the planetary stuff is a mess, needs a good sorting out.

Turns out it's moot point, Vulture was gone when I relogged. But good to know the ins & outs, thanks.

Later I did track down a cache of illegal canisters, so the trip wasn't a bust. And in the same place, an occupied escape pod. Looking into what I can do with that, I assume it's a Search & Rescue affair.

EDIT: Well, that was too simple. I was hoping for a kiss from a grateful rescued space princess -- different game, I guess :D
