Attacked and destroyed in SOLO MODE

HI All
Last night I was attacked and destroyed by a Thargoid in SOLO MODE whilst scanning in Analysis mode in Arietis Sector VO-R b4-2. How is this possible? In open play this has happened 3 times whilst scanning which I put down to being in the wrong place, but solo mode?. By the way I'm a newbee learning to play. Are there areas where it's safe from Thargoids to scan?

Arietis Sector VO-R b4-2 is a Thargoid-controlled system; you will attract repeated Thargoid interdictions from Supercruise there, and you will get more appearing from Frame Shift Anomalies after dropping to normal flight. Doing anything there generally will require a starship swift enough to escape and at least a bit of extra Hull upgrades so it can take a few scratches; this does not prevent scanning and mapping the Water World there, it is just a bit more preparation.

You can get a view of Thargoid war systems and their states by using Thargoid War Mode here:

War mode 1.png

This applies a colour-code to the Galaxy map systems:
  • Grey/white systems have no Thargoid presence.
  • Yellow Alert systems can incur hyperspace destabilisation on the way in with a Thargoid from which to escape, but are otherwise quite safe. System anti-xeno forces will join you in normal flight, some with repair limpets for you!
  • Orange Invasion systems are not safe; you will see Thargoid interdictions and Frame Shift Anomalies, although the system AX forces will try to help as well.
  • Green Control systems are much like Invasion, but without the system AX forces.
  • Red Maelstrom systems scramble your displays and have much more frequent interdictions.
Just in case you did not see or did not check the Galaxy map, you get also a Thargoid Controlled warning here when charging the Frame Shift Drive:

The Info panel also displays Thargoid Controlled in the same way as it does for faction states:

Hopefully this helps you to stay a bit safer!

Hi Spacerschoice-00 Thanks for your reply and the nod. I will take your advice before setting off again. Would you say the Sol area or say Colonia area's are safer. Can you recommend a system and station so I can learn to fly etc. Its bad enough avoiding pirates and bounty hunters LOL. I really want to play in open play.

Colonia is a loooooooooong way away, 22000LY.

If you are new then I'd suggest just staying in the Bubble for now (the main cluster of human worlds near Sol), and maybe try excluding Thargoid systems from your route planning settings in the Galaxy Map to make sure you don't jump to them by accident.

The last time I looked there were only 1-2 thousand systems with Thargoid problems, all at one edge of the Bubble. If you aren't already near them they generally aren't an issue - I think I've jumped to a Thargoid-danger system accidentally just once since the war started last November (though I've jumped to them many times deliberately :) ).

If you pick a starport to base yourself at away from the war front (see various Youtubes & forum threads for suggestions) you should be fine.

From Thargoids? Anywhere that is not in the war zone.
From hostile players? In usual gameplay, you'll be hard pressed to encounter a human player at all. Hotspots, which will also include hostile players, would be:
  • any CG (community goal) system; there are none going on right now, though
  • Shinrarta Dezhra - but you'll need to be Elite in any single profession to obtain the permit there (which usually serves as justification - if you're Elite, you should know what you're getting into)
  • Deciat, the home system of Felicity Farseer, pretty much the first Engineer for most players
and, to some lesser extent
  • any other Engineer home system
  • any other "quick cash" hotspot discussed here or in other social media sites

Outside of these places, there's statistically one player for every 10 inhabited systems, your chances of meeting anyone are low, chances of meeting anyone actively attempting to kill you even lower. Colonia is pretty much the same with fewer systems and fewer players, although there is a known sump of villainity at Carcosa (you might have to make an appointment) who are often hanging out in the Colonia system itself (the only place there with at least a bit of passing player traffic).
If you set up camp in one of the lower population systems in the Northern (Colonia side) half of the Bubble, you should be reasonably safe from player encounters or Thargoids.
