Attention Pirates: Create the Pirate code of conduct for ED

Pirates take your cargo and let you go (unless you run, fire back or they are having a really bad day)

People who just shoot you and kill you are not pirates; they are either bounty hunters or PVPers. Pirates abide by a code when they are pirating

at least the CODE does. :)

Pay your tax, save your hull repair costs ;)

edit: when i'm forced to engage, i prefer to take out drives and let them think about what they've done, assuming no AFMU.

edit2: i always fire first, esp if it's a ship i can't mass lock. if you don't disable your engines, you get shot and disabled. i send the warning message when i can, but it's never first priority -- getting close, stripping shields and firing a hatchbreaker is.

Here's a starting point. It would be great to adapt this to our own Universe and therefore establish a code and even language to live by in Elite Dangerous. Anyone who doesn't follow the code isn't a pirate but a cutthroat murderer. Honour amongst thieves as they say.

i dont care if u use a code or not ur getting squat from me i would rather self distruct pfft leeches

In what way is attempting to avoid a limpet by moving one's ship an exploit? It's almost as if there is an expectation that the trader should simply stop in space to let the pirate plunder their ship....

These include fixing:
- Limpets from NEVER connecting with an exploiting trader who constantly turns his ship
You're lucky.
I couldn't find the background marker color formatting button.

I consider blockading trade to be a win on par with getting your cargo so no issues there. It's your hull loss, not mine and doesn't really affect my bottom line. :) You'd be much better off to just eject a few units of cargo and haul ass away. Most pirates will let you go if you do that. I only demand full ejection from people who run or give me a hard time ;)

A Pirate may not fire upon a CMDR immediately on encounter
A Pirate must initiate comms with the opening line "Arrr...what ye be haulin'" (clearly needs work lol)
A Pirate must allow for three attempted comms exchanges where there is no reply met. On the third attempt a single warning shot against the ship is permitted.
If after all three attempts to initiate comms with the target have failed, a pirate may engage the target with the intention of forcing a cargo drop, not destruction.
A Pirate must carry a Cargo Scanner and Cargo Hatch Limpet
A Pirate must wear the pirate faction paint job (where available) or a red coloured paint job
A Pirate should use the approved pirate lingo to remain in character (optional)

Here's a starting point. It would be great to adapt this to our own Universe and therefore establish a code and even language to live by in Elite Dangerous. Anyone who doesn't follow the code isn't a pirate but a cutthroat murderer. Honour amongst thieves as they say.

#8 A Pirate must drink their rum straight from the bottle! Arrrr!

Many pirates do have a code of conduct, shame traders don't have a similar code.
Our code can be found at http://thecodeelitedangerous.enjin.com/

I would love to be able to interdict someone, then have the time to communicate with them and let them know that if they drop part of thier cargo then they can go free and my Pirate friends will let them continue without further interdictions in that system.
However in reality as soon as a trader is interdicted they usually make a run for it in which case we follow and take out thier shields. At this point some will stop and comms can be established, but most of the time they panic and go for the FSD. This can go either way, either they escape or they die.
If wings is implemented properly pirating could actually start to be profitable and a lot more fun for both sides.
I am hoping that when I interdict someone (post Wings), my partners in crime can jump straight into the instance with me . This will give us the time needed to mass lock the target with one ship while another member scans and another opens comms with the trader.
On the other side, the trader may well have friends (or mercs) in main space who he can communicate with and get into the instance with all of us.
This would make things very interesting indeed and really liven up multiplayer for everyone.

I really like this. Here's my take:

A Pirate should
not fire upon a CMDR immediately on encounter
attempt comms with the victim, er, business partner to discuss terms
fire warning shots before using lethal force, if negotiations fail
let the prey, er, fellow CMDR go once the terms are met

Good pirates should
keep demands reasonable so as not to frighten off traders to PvE or Solo
offer escort back to station (if possible in 1.2)
get them again and again on the same trade route - like a protection racket.

I enjoy seeing that just as much as I enjoy getting your cargo...

the point being you get nothing from me and to be honest ive only had to self distruct once in a T6 such is the lack of skillz in the pirates i come across also i have enough cash to allow me to do so at any time money is no object for me

Sadly, the existence of a "code" will not allow the trader to be sure of anything at all with respect to an encounter. The lack of any, visible to the target, pirate "statistics" make any encounter an exercise in guesswork.

Applause for the initiative though. :)

You know, if it weren't for naming and shaming rules, we could make a list of honorable pirates... :)

In response I will from now on carry this message in my clipboard:

Shiver me tribbles, a gentlemen pirate.
Don't shoot good Sir, I am but a humble explorer
I have only data in my hold which is too complicated for your oafish ways
Please let me be on my way

Avast ye stinking dog, ayl have none of ye fancy talk, give us ye cargo or Il cut ya throat and ravish your woman!

Personally... I'd send a message through Supervisor during/prior to interdiction. Having something on cut/paste or a standard voice Attack message would help people identify the pirate/privateer types.

This is a cool idea. Some suggestions: Rather than try to define for everyone what is and isn't piracy, and dictate what other players must and must not do, just get a few like-minded CMDRs together and create a pirate faction. Give it a cool name, a cool insignia, and (of course) a pirate code, and means of identifying. Other CMDRs can join by pledging to follow the code and be an ally to the Fellows of the Order, but that won't happen until the faction is up and running and looks like fun and looks exclusive.

Perhaps make merch and badges and forum avatar graphics and other club-members-only stuff. Act like you are the superior pirates, non-affiliated so-called "pirates" are mostly just amateurs and wannabees. But be perfect gentlemen (and gentlewomen) about that. It's unseemly to punch down.

Submit your activities to the official GalNet feed. Much like the (player-invented) illegal racers now featuring in the official news, I'd say an organised pirate faction is pretty newsworthy stuff! Once you have some buy-in and a membership list and look like you're an organised group, ask FD to make your insignia available as a ship decal, etc. I think some people there would be inclined to help this kind of player organisation if time/budget/policy allows.

There's all sorts of things you can start to do once you're collaborating as a player-made faction - have a list of Members in Good Standing, and Members of Insufficient Character. Have a contact point so Traders who feel they were unfairly destroyed can complain to the Faction. The faction may or may not take action, but repeated complaints against a certain member may move result in their fellows requesting they raise their game, or be moved to the wall of shame. Or whatever. Have a list of Heros Of The Order... Make your own medals... Experiment with an organized blockade of a trade route... Organize hunts of CMDRs that falsely identify themselves as faction members then violate code. Make the faction a real "thieves guild", of (hopefully) growing appeal and power and influence.

Point is, this can start really really small. You don't need a lot of buy-in from other pirates or for people to agree with your code, just go right ahead and build a cool clubhouse that piques interest. You can grow it slowly from there.
If you want help with graphics / insignia or something like that, ask the forums - there are talented people here who I think would help, even if not pirates themselves. I would :)
