General / Off-Topic Audio Book Recommendation Thread

Hi Folks,

Obviously there has been much talk of late or audiobooks. The large number of Official Elite Books being translated into Audio format is great.

I spend a lot of my working day in the car driving to and from sites of work and have been a massive fan of audiobooks since using them to stay sane whilst driving around central london daily.

I now live in the Nottinghamshire area but drive all over the East of England. I now get my audiobooks form Audible.co.uk and continue to rack up many hours worth of reading(?)/ listening.

I have spoken to a few people of the forums that also listen to a lot of audiobook/drama etc so I thought it was time we had a recommendation thread. I will try and keep it updated with the 2nd post listing genres and recommendations and number of +1's or repeated recommendations to help keep track.

If the thread has not been updated for a while feel free to PM me a nudge.

Cheers Fozza

Classic radio sci-fi drama?

This page (and elsewhere on that site) has some great classic sci-fi - I highly recommend #77 on that list at top right.
The Green Hills of Earth is classic Heinlein - a tale, and a character, that I've always loved.

For that one person out there that may have been too young at the time to know about it... The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy! The radio play is better than the TV show, film, or book.

It got me listening to radio plays. If you're not happy paying the £8.00 a month for Audible.co.uk then don't forget the cheaper alternative

If your PVR can manage it, you can even set it to record a whole series and copy it onto a USB stick for your car.

I love the Foundation Series by Asimov (particularly the later books) and the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. I mean this in a nice way (they relax me) but they've been helping me fight Insomnia for years now. They're my goto audiobooks. For the record I prefer subtle in my audiobooks and not overly sound effected (like the star wars audiobooks) which I find distracting when trying to sleep.

Edit: The Wife thought James's first words would be 'The Wheel of Time, by Robert Jordan'.

Awesome resource. I've got the torrent downloading, and have just started listening to Part 2 of Brave New World. It'll be a while before I get to The Green Hills of Earth...

As a Discworld fan I recommend any Discworld books or the Bromeliad trilogy (Diggers, Truckers, Wings) all by Terry Pratchett.
The unabridged version is read by Stephen Briggs and the abridged version is read by Tony Robinson.

Two I love from from Audible Fozza

A Short History of Nearly Everything
World War Z

Can't recommend A Short History nearly enough fantastic listen... not entirely factual mind :)

Slightly off-topic but there a lot of great podcasts on BBC.co.uk. I especially enjoy The Infinite Monkey Cage, Marcus Du Sautoy's Brief History of Mathematics and Discovery shows.

I listen to a lot of audio books, and by far the best I've ever listented to are Joe Abercrombies books read by Steven Pacey. Excellent fantasy books in their own right, but Steven Pacey is an amazing narrator with a wide range of voices making the characters really come alive.

The Blade itself is the first of the initial trilogy.

Peter f Hamiltons Sci-fi books are all pretty good to, and very very long.

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy makes a comback

I'd guess this is close to being on topic. I'm sure it's of interest to audiobook enthusiasts.

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio play is back on the radio. Saturday 8th Mar at 6:00 on Radio4 Extra, repeated at midnight.
