Autocannons as a replacement for Class 3-4 multicannons

Im wondering if it would be possible to introduce Autocannons for C3-C4 hardpoints

Large multicannons were dropped because they were unbalanced, and i think large caliber machine guns would be "unrealistic"

but given that multicanons in game represent AA and historically, machine guns were surpassed by autocannons such as the 40mm BOFORS

What i propose:

C3 autocannons -similar properties as C2 (regular) cannon but
-with a 5 round burst fire (similar to burst laser - full burst is fired in rapid succession)
-worse accuracy than C3 cannon (as in wider projectile spread)
- much higher muzzle velocity + comparatively higher armor penetration
- much lower damage/shot potential (although burst damage should be similar to one C3 cannon shot)
- better target tracking for turreted/gimbaled mounts (faster weapon turn rate / better target acquisition)

it could even use the C2 cannon model with minor modifications such as an added reloading mechanism with ammo-boxes to fill up the large hardpoint´s space

C3 class could look something like this

sounds ace to me, really feel projectile weapons are missing something in the upper hardpoint sizes
 
I'd be happy for normal C3 and 4 cannons to just get a slight velocity buff - right now, you may was well climb out of the cockpit and float on over to your target with the cannon shell in hand, than whack it against the hull.

slow muzzle velocity of cannons is intended to prevent sniping (i.e. hitting fighters at medium ranges) it makes cannons only really useful against large ships. these autocannons would be better at hitting small agile craft although with lower DMG/impact (so no one shots) and their accuracy means you cant snipe sub-systems from long range.

Additionaly, burst fire means you cant just spam them
 
That sounds like that Fed's capital class side cannons. They fire on 5-6 bursts, with range like 5-6 km... Would like to have something similar to mount on c3 or c4 Hp.
 
I've been meaning to make a thread asking for basically the same thing. I was even going to use the bofors as an example.

whatever you say... until this game actually puts up a public access stats site .....to show player account stats .. I'll believe the moon is really Elvis in disguise first



trying to sneak autocannons in by limiting it to burst size... is just trying to sneak the unbalanced weapon back in .... C3 Pulses will be just fine for now :) or fit C2 autocannons

I still oppose the motion ... by the lack of answers in here... I'd say most others don't really care that much either :)

Just wanted to say I like this concept.

A light cannon, something between normal cannons and multi-cannons. Perhaps a kinetic gun that feels a little like the Flak 38 (I think), that I remember having such an impact in Saving Private Ryan (as in sounds and fire rate, rather than the horrific results).

No promises or ETA, but I think there's room for a weapon like this.
 
Cant we just have a flying gatling AKA the space warthog?

I like :). Also Sandro, how are procedural modules and weapons coming along? It would definitely inject some life into ship customization.
