Automated Undocking in an Asteroid Base - A demonstration of Flying While Intoxicated

Anyone else notice that the pathing used while exiting the Asteroid Base while in the Automated Undocking Mode is a bit hazardous? Prob about 30% or so of the attempts result in smashing into the large "square" suport structure near the exit. Not healthy of an unshielded vessel.

Hi :)

The Automated Undocking AI goes something like this.....

'Is the player at their keyboard / computer concentrating on what I'm doing?'....Damn!, yes, I've got to behave...sort of.' 😖
'Ho Ho Ho!....I've just noticed, the player's not watching what I'm doing, time for some fun!' :devilish:

Seriously :D...Exiting Asteroid bases (some small percentage undocking at other bases as well) has always been kinda 'dithery', the bigger your ship the worst it gets, most probably due to having to contend with the surrounding asteroids outside as well as negotiating the inside of the dock.

So yes, I've noticed. :)...It's just a fact of life with this game, the docking computer is there as an 'assistance' and not (ever) to be relied upon!

Edit...Also particularly 'Dangerous' when you first boot up the game and intend leaving the dock you are currently at (at any station). I usually press the default 'X' key which usually resets your speed controller, which kicks in the auto undock mechanic to what it's supposed to do. Sometimes though it doesn't, and the ship will continue just dithering, so I just manually pilot the ship out.

Jack :)

It’s just named wrong. It’s really an automatic collision computer. There’s really no other way to have your ship purposely automatically locate something to crash into, and then crash into it.

Mind you.. if you think about an auto pilot in a 'space' ship, the statistical likelihood of crashing into a space station within a control group is comparatively high.

Pffft. The docking computer in the original Elite never crashed. And that was ~31 years ago. It can be fixed, they just won’t for some reason. Maybe one day.

Would be nice to have keybinds for certain docking computer and SCA functions to toggle them on and off: Such as 'automatic landing' for planets, etc. My HOTAS has a couple of free toggle switches and it would be a great improvement for quality of life and immersion.

Try taking a taxi to a coriolis with noob hammers if you really want to experience fear. Nothing like seeing your approaching doom and being unable to do anything about it.
