Automation and Scripting - An investigation into further abuses of BGS and Powerplay

That's one idea.. But.. would you do it in open? And is that much credits made by the activity mentioned here? Fighting over systems? (I don't do PP or mess with the BGS so I'll admit to being totally ignorant to it)
What if the bot cannot discern the difference between Open and Solo while board flipping? It gets a full load and off it goes.

OP : I feel you. But bots and cheats are always been in MMO, since a long time. After, with more or less success I agree.

More grind you will have, more bots you will have. Logical. Bring some emergent content to PP and then it could change.

Agree your point. BGS (and powerplay) needs to evolve into something more engaging and spontaneous than its current form. If the game was only BGS & PP nobody would buy it because not enough entertainment.

Docking Computer makes it quite easily automated.
This ... Without DC it would be significantly more difficult (maybe almost impossible) to program those bots ... maybe controling faction should have option to disable DC in their stations ?

TW

For the BGS, bots running in solo and PG would be harder to detect - and could pretty much cause trouble with impunity.

These bots were switching modes presumably to maximize mission access, or for trolling purposes. Which is why we have video of them in action in open.

So "gah modes are bad" is irrelevant.

I just have a hard time believing that someone automated the extremely variable process of flying from a station to another station. In this whole thread is there something I missed which proves that was done?

You need to watch the first video the OP posted the way the bot moves is clearly automated as they only perform one action at a time.

They travel out from the letterbox in a straight line no pitch roll or yaw, gear down to control speed. Come to a stop at a set distance of around 10km's out still facing directly ahead, once stopped they turn to face their destination star. Once they've turned they charge FSD, once charged they accelerate to jump.

A person doing this would be playing the game with one finger, no mouse no joystick no mistakes or overcorrections and no reaction to other ships. People are less precise, more fluid and can multitask.

Hi CMDR Tom D,

Awesome documented investigation!

I’d like to throw in a suggestion your way, and if you agree, you could pass it on to FDEV. So, I suggest a simple image-based security access to Station Services like CAPTCHA e.g click on the limpet:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/156205264448651265/424705260951568384/Captcha.png

There are many other forms of CAPTCHA but something that works in with some Elite Dangerous lore would be nice, and I for one wouldn't mind just a little CAPTCHA when I dock to ensure our game rolls with less cheating.

HELL NO.

At the end of all of this. This debate over tracking them, the only people capable of true pattern analysis is FDev. Everything flows through them. Especially with the changes to EDDN, this massive debate over tracking & "stalking" is frivilous and distracts from the problem at hand, that is slowly killing a part of the community and will only get worse unless dealt with swiftly & decisively. The debate over modes is also deveating from the point of OPs post. Mode doesn't matter, it still happens, FDev COULD still track it down. We cannot as well anymore.

This. Identifying a bot from its actions at a given moment can be extremely hard, but identifying a pattern in actions is way easier. An account logged and running 24/7 is easily recognizable server side and should immediately raise a red flag, just to say the first obvious thing.

Ehm, I'm flying with landing gear down through mailbox. This way I have better control over my speed and I can't accidentally hit boost and slam my ship to the station wall. Is it crime now? Am I going to be banned? :)

And have the question asked by the Station Security Contact, as a homage to the FE2 copy protection secuirty check

Interesting thread but I'm not sure that an "ultimatum" to fdev to tell them to "stop selling the game [for a fiver]" will be particularly effective.

And still! No-one has come up why someone or some group, would pay real money to buy accounts to bot and effect the BGS.

It sounds harsh, but I just don't see it. I'm a developer and have been for decades. I've codes and admin'd online games and I've investigated botting in all shapes and sizes.

Anyone with the intelligence to be able to write a bot of this nature, would;
1. Ensure the botting was done away from view (There is no problem ensuring this is done outside of Open)
2. Ensure the botting was done in an area less likely to be visible to participating players/groups
3. The bit that's thinking .. is this; I could write better than this, and it would be undetectable.

Also, we have seen no other evidence, that someone creating a bot to launch from the docking pad, exit the station and then... We're 'told' it's effecting the entire game. I'm left wondering; Having left the station they have to;

a. Orientate to the jump vector. Not easy, as it can be anywhere. We have not seen this
b. Perform the jump.. Easy peasy if aligned
c. Enter the new system and orientate from jump in point. Easy
d. Navigate to supercruise drop point. This is very difficult.
c. Drop from SC and align with station.

So, to believe the OP, someone has created this, and kept it super secret, and with all that ability and indeed, intelligence, is using it to mess with someone's powerplay? In open where it is super visible and super obvious?

What I think we're seeing is; someone with multiple accounts automating some of the procedure, aka, the undocking. That being the case, we're dealing with a bored kid who has automated part of the procedure. We have DC, this person has a Undocking Computer. Big woowoo. I could that in a day and I guaranteed you would not be able to tell the difference. But I keep coming back to... Why bother. I can exit any ship from sidewinder to cutter in seconds manually.

It is not extremely variable and that's the point. It is invariant enough to make even a scripted bot fairly essay to achieve if you have any programming experience. For crackers that also use the illegal (in FDev TOS point of view) memory scraping, it is even easier.

Sorry, checking the game mode is child's play. Press escape and read the mode near the bottom of the screen. Even a bot can do it.

Wait, I just noticed a thing - in facts, it's literally the first thing happening in the video. When the Cutter is lining up to the slot, a NPC ship cuts it and runs into the slot. The Cutter very clearly stops to let the NPC pass then resumes course and goes through.

I replied to this in post #68. In short hubris.

This is simple behaviour. All it is doing is detecting the that slot is blocked and waiting until it is not.

No it stops before the ship is into the slot. Watch at 1:37: the NPC is coming from above, you can see the Cutter braking when the NPC is still a bit above it and both are at some distance from the slot.

At first glance of the thread that would make sense, until you watch the video and see it move.

"I don't understand the motivation behind this" doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

If I was guessing I'd say it originates from the angry offline-gaters who have been hacking ED since day one encouraging other players to use their hacks and complaining loudly when they get perma-banned across multiple accounts. No links possible as some people are too dumb to resist, but your google-fu will show you it if you look.

I think you're being very selective in what you reply to. I posted a full breakdown and analysis. While I agree 'in part' to your 'ego' narrative, the story as a whole, simply does not add up. No sane person buys game accounts at this volume to show they can code a script. So the question still remains..

Yep, in agreement there, except for the 'paying for new accounts' - Sounds like someone with disposable income, a huge chip, and not very bright... :D
