Newcomer / Intro Azeban City out of range and don't know what to do.

Hi, Completely new and don't know what to do really.

The guide says fly to Azeban City. Well it's 73 light years from me and My ship said it ain't happening. So now I'm flying around to random stations and "citys" which turn out to be hole in the wall little stations that just deny my requests to dock. I am using an Oculus Rift and am having trouble using the galaxy map. There doesn't seem to be a way to search for anything unless you know its exact name, and whenever I turn to read the text on something it disappears cause I guess whatever I'm looking it is targeted, so looking away to read the text breaks the lock or something. I don't know.

Any general insight or wisdom would be appreciated. I am currently in the Eravate system floating not far from Sylvester City (Lol, it's funny they call that little station a city. Docking request denied, again.) Don't know what to do...:(

I think the guide is a bit outdated, and was written prior to the entire galaxy being unlocked. Everyone was within jump range of Azeban City.

You need to get within 7.5 km to get a successful docking request. If the station's docks are full, you'll still get denied and have to wait your turn.

Reading the HUD font is pretty hard on Rift in the default amber. There's a bit of a hack to change the color to green, which is much more legible.

Going to go with Sargon
Elite is amazing in the rift but spend a couple of days mastering the controls. It will save you a world of pain

The video is great except for one thing...

YOU CAN use reverse thrust... I use it all the time to decelerate and adjust approach speed while in SuperCruise.

Stations shouldn't refuse docking requests so there is something odd here. Are you trying to dock at outposts (external docking facilities - no letterslot)? If so, then you may be in a queue. Quick tip: keep an eye on one pad and as soon a ship lifts off it and the lights go out request docking. You can often jump the queue over NPCs that way.

Edit: You can tell the difference between an outpost and a station in the system bodies list in the left hand UI - outposts have a symbol like a little ray gun next to them while stations are indicated by a coriolis symbol.

Yes I watched that, and I understand how to travel between systems, but I fear I am traveling in vain, as each system I'm met with more small posts that just deny requests. Did it mention anything about creating a flight path or multiple jump points to reach your destination? I will watch it again to be sure.

Maybe, but I've been alright so far for pretty much everything except that Galaxy map. I did all the training missions a bunch of times before launching into the game. I feel at least competent with my ship control, and honestly the Oculus has no effect on that. It must be usable, cause everyone online says this is the best Oculus enabled game and they never mention the Galaxy map. I will probably just have to learn its idiosyncracies.

This is useful, thank you. Will all stations have a larger docking area so that people can actually get requests granted? Or are there stations as small as this "city" and no clear way to determine their size?

Sythrix - Azeban City is located in the Eranin system. If you go into the galaxy map and navigate to the 2nd tab (on the left), there's an entry in there to search by system. Enter Eranin and when the galaxy map centers on Eranin, use the UI to navigate to Plot Route.

When you exit the galaxy map and navigate to the Navigation tab in the Left UI, you will see an icon next to your next destination (it looks like shape connected by lines connected to another shape) - that is your next destination to jump to.

Thanks all. I figured it out. I never made it to Azeban, but I found another station and got into the swing of things. Special thanks to Googol for information on how to differentiate between stations and outposts.

Nope you cant fly reverse :p What you are talking about is adjusting your speed. Its not the same like flying in normal space.

Even your throttle only works halfway. Just look at it the moment you hit the middle you will see that you have reached minimum speed, you can thottle down all you want you will not go reverse :p

You can fly in reverse. You can set the throttle to only allow forward movement but that's a control option (one I heartily recommend). EDIT note that it continues to show speed in the same way as forward speed, by climbing upward, rather than going down below a zero point, but it's speed in a different direction :)

Reverse works for me as follows:

I'm using X52 HOTAS and in control options you set the thrust to "full range" and then the thrust goes forward and backward as you move the thrust lever forwards and backwards. On the meter to the right of the radar the indicator goes below the zero line and it actually flips and works from the top downwards when reversing

the default control method is to have forward and reverse toggled on a key press, but that doesn't make sense with the HOTAS throttle, and it feels more natural to centre the throttle for zero thrust and then have forward and reverse as opposite directions from the centre mark.

Only times I've been refused docking permission is
- when more than 7.5km from station
- lots of other players and outpost has limited number of landing pads

if desperate to dock to complete a mission, try logout and back in using solo mode as theoretically it will be quieter with just NPCs and you can get docking permission sooner

Nope, but you can be refused if you are too far away when you make the request, all the bays are taken when you make the request or you are using a ship that is too big for the small platform, outsider stations.

Incidentally if you cant get into a station in open mode because of heavy traffic, just press escape, select save to main menu, then restart in solo mode, request again, then after you have docked up go back into open mode.

Addendum to what I posted: stations are far less likely to be fully occupied than outposts because they have so many bays, but it is possible that they might fill up. The 7.5 km range limit applies to outposts but I have had requests accepted at stations from 9km out (note this may have changed in Release 1.0 so Cmdr Inigo may be right). Outposts are a pita if you have a delivery mission and they keep refusing docking so I generally check the destination type before accepting one with a short time limit.

You need to be within 7.5km of the station or outpost or it will deny your request and also if there are no free docking pads you will also get denied (this is more of an issue at outpost as they only have a few pads). If all pads are full just wait a few seconds roughly and request again as one will free up quickly. Welcome to ED commander :)
