Back in (the) black

Hi,

Just started Elite again after several years. I duster of my trusted old Vive Pro wireless and greased of the old X55 Rhino controller. After several hours of struggle to get the drivers for the X55 to work I found some old version on a ftp site which gave full life to the stick in Windows 11.

The 4090 seems to be able to run the headset in 150% when playing Horizons legacy. I did not see any other cmdrs when joining open. Is there still someone playing Horizons legacy in open or should I try Horizons non legacy? To my understanding the non legacy is not good in VR but I have not tried it. Should I give it a go, is there more cmdrs there?

Last question, to my understanding Odyssey is not go for VR users so I can happily ignore this update, right?

There's nothing wrong with Odyssey in VR which I'm aware of. Not sure why you would want to play Horizons still, I might be missing something. There's the old chestnut of going on foot and have a 2D display but that's irrelevant for Horizons since you can't do that anyway. To me it just feels like I'm wearing a space helmet.

I loved my Vive Pro, they were awesome when they launched. The performance on the 4090 must be just insanely good.

Thanks for the feedback!

I saw some post that the non legacy variants of Elite did not run well so that is why I went for the legacy version. I will try the normal Horizons. For me the Odessey 2D on foot gameplay seems a bit akward still so I still do not see any point of upgrading from Horizons though.

You're right BUT if you are anything like me you'd get motion sick immediately.
Flying is one thing but walking as a character destroys me.
I tried playing Minecraft, for example, and the jumping motion made me feel nauseous immediately. I feel nauseous just thinking about it.

Legacy is a dead game. I would not play it if I were you. No updates, no new content, and the content that exists is already years behind what's in the live game.

Odyssey is more than on foot. For one, descending and hooning on atmospheric planets is really awesome in VR. If you are able to make your peace with the virtual 2D screen, the Odyssey content is actually really fun. But just for the atmospheric planets alone I say it is worth it, even if you never leave your ship.

And then there's the new ships to consider - if you own Odyssey, you can buy them all for credits at the shipyard after the early access periodf All of them except the Panther Clipper are out of EA now. If you don't own Odyssey, the only way is to buy them with ARX. So getting one ship costs roughly what Odyssey costs, even more when it is on sale. Getting a second ship for ARX is financial suicide.

On-foot isn't VR. It is presented as a virtual screen in your 3D environment. It should be fine in terms of motion sickness.
