Back to Elite and the Starmap is a mess

They did revamp the galaxy map a lot a few years ago changing the tabs and the icons IIRC there were the usual complaints about the changes at the time, perhaps they have been away since before that change.

oh well that explains a lot, i joined like 2-3 weeks before 3.3 dropped - and except ADS getting removed exactly when i was getting to it and wondering "how stupid is that? do i have to point the ship at a planet to discover it?" - Horizons is pretty much unchanged

I have no issues with map, it opens fast and is smooth. zoom in and out are quick with no lag. What kind of hardware are you running?

Still don't know if OP is talking about Odyssey or EDH. GalMap and SysMap of EDH are both snappy and good UI IMHO. I can't get accustomed to GalMap and SysMap of EDO, though. Only thing that is good in EDO is the search bar and the copy button, but that's it. Everything else feels like a regression. And switching to and from it is slow, so much so we even have a "fade-to-black" in the new update now.
But really, who cares?

I suppose the OP should be glad they don't play in VR.... (which I think the GalMap is excellent in, but it did take a little experimentation with bindings to get 'just right')

Give it time, after a whle it becomes second nature. (I'm assuming you are referring to EDO rather than Horizons, or have been away quite a long time)

I enjoy posts like these. Makes me smile. However, it makes me smile even MORE when a response says to Try Odyssey. Like that will fix everything. This game is what it is and no amount of chest pounding is going to fix it. In fact, I can't think of ONE suggestion that FDev has taken and ran with that ended well. I still love this game and keep coming back to it... still the best of what it does vs what is available IMO.

It doesn't have 'performance problems' as such, in terms of lag and so on. It is however a trash fire. I find myself playing in Horizons unless I'm doing something Odyssey-specific because everything is such a chore, hidden away behind endless buttons and mouse clicks. Hold to plot also drives me insane, the one thing that I want to be a click isn't. I just can't get along with it. It is in no way an improvement.

Many of the UI changes are an improvement, or are at least no worse than the old UI. The galmap though, no. Sorry but no.

I never hold to plot. I just click the star and click the route plot button. Hold to plot is super jank and was clearly aimed at controller usability.
All the cool kids use HOTAS.

"press and hold" is 100% console cancer and i despise it, but nothing unique to this game.
guess this has to do with console players pressing random buttons or something like that?
it´s the same with this horrible radial menus. they have a place, and that is on consoles, not pc.

now there are a lot of people on pc that prefer to play with a controller, so the above isn´t true, but i still don´t like it ;)

if you press random buttons, maybe stop doing it instead of letting everybody else suffer from your own mistakes.
is it an accessibility feature for people with parkinsons? make it optional!

like someone above mentioned, there is a "plot route" button that you can use instead

Seriously, who designed this ? Was it for a Console? It's slow, VERY SLOW, not orientated to PC, not orientated to anything as far as I can tell.

FDev has reallt lost the idea of PC Gaming.

PC GAMING

Get it into your heads. It's such a shame to see the destruction of this game over 8 years. Real shame.
What are you talking about?
This forum is for Elite Dangerous (ED) and not Elite.
You have two versions of ED: Elite Dangerous Horizons (EDH) and Elite Dangerous Odyssey (EDO).
I am playing EDH and I don't see any difference with the galaxy map: 1920x1080@60 and easy to navigate, there's a search field and everything you need:

Just a sidenote, but I love how this boomer community still lives in the mid 90s, believing gamepads are for consoles and every pc gamer uses keyboards to play games. :)

That's funny. I use a controller, but I don't hold to plot, but then I also don't play Odyssey. Go figure.
I use the controller for navigation on the galaxy map, but the mouse and keyboard to type and select.

Not sure what that has to do with it. There have been controllers used on PCs since there have been PCs, basically, even Atari and NES style controllers for early DOS games. Going from D-Input to X-Input (Xbox controller standard mode) was a bit of a needless hassle though – standardize and auto-detect and set everything to make sure nothing works quite right, kind of like USB C charging. :giggle:

Of course for FPS type games, a mouse is much better than analog sticks in general. That started more in the mid to late 90s though and around 2000 with consoles using analog sticks, so not particularly boomer related at all. There was a Microsoft controller I had for a while that integrated mouse control into the middle of the controller by twisting and pivoting the two halves of the controller between your hands for precision, or clicking onto internal buttons at the limits for continuous panning and/or tilting. It actually worked very well for FPS games, not quite as good as a mouse, but much better than an analog stick.

Now some controllers also have gyroscopic and accelerometer control, but the same X-Input mode standard is holding this innovation back on PCs. This can actually work really well for precision aiming in FPS type games; much better than analog sticks.

But I digress...

It is still kind of.. well, call it what you want, how consoles got dropped after the UI got so many console-typical UI changes...

I wonder if they were transitioning away from Scaleform, and took the opportunity to overhaul affected UIs since they would have to be adapted to a new API anyway...
