Backup community forum

Some members of the community have discussed setting up a backup forum for ourselves, in case of interruption to service on this forum, and perhaps just to provide an alternative to the existing Reddit / Discords.

These are the suggestions so far:

1. A separate Discord (votes: 9)

2. A free forum, e.g. - https://www.forumotion.com/ or https://www.proboards.com/ (both look good) (votes: 9)

3. A subreddit (votes: 0)

We will need volunteers to manage and moderate it. I can be one of them, I suggest we have at least 5 so the work is well distributed.

I personally vote for 2. Unfortunately I can't be a moderator at the moment, but hopefully somebody steps up to the task😅
 
I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but I'd love to join too. I'd probably prefer option 2 because I tend to find Discord confusing, but maybe if it can be more structured I would find it less overwhelming.
 
For my vote, I'd say Discord would prob be easiest to set up and manage, and is all we need for now.

We should only need it very rarely, if at all, in case of longer maintenance like today, or in case there is maintenance at the moment that something interesting drops (unlikely but you never know, I had a slight panic this morning!)

It is highly unlikely that this forum will disappear, as Frontier have said they will keep it. But in case it did, the Discord could be a place for us to gather, reconnect and set up something more permanent from there (like an actual forum).

I'd say the worst option is a subreddit bc everyone and their monkey will find us there. The community we have here is great (lurkers included! I always love it when one of you chooses to pop up!) It's best if we can find something not explicitly exclusive to our forum group, but a bit harder for the wider community to find.
 
I’m not a big discord guy, I’d prefer just a backup Proboards or some other quick free forum type of board to serve as an emergency backup if this one goes down for whatever reason. If people want a discord for casual chat that’s fine too, I guess.

Archiving the threads on this forum in one way or another is also important, I think.
 
If I had all the time in the world I’d sit around with phpbb developing a full-fledged other site…but then I’d probably just get knocked by Frontier’s PR department or something

I am in no matter what we do
 
It looks like the consensus is Discord then by majority of votes (7 for Discord, 3 for forum, 0 for a subreddit)

@Fallax and @Topaz Star would you feel happy to lead on setting it up (I have no experience of this) and I can help draft the rules and anything else I can do to help? Can I be an admin/moderator when its ready?
 
One problem with Discord is that I guess it could end overrun with new people from the official PZ2 discord.
I prefer a good old forum, but I'll join it any alternative as a user.

BUT, key question, we are talking about just building a backup, right? I want that this forum keeps being our main and true community centre.
