The new 9 series has built in downsampling. I've picked 2560x1440 and it's downsampling on the card to 1920x1080. Looks so good. Maxing out the new beta with everything on and smaa. Tried it on both my 3930k with 16 gig ram and my home rig I usually play on which is the 930 with 6 gig of ram.
If you're buying a card now I wouldn't go with anything else for the money, buying an older nvidia or ati card just doesn't make sense.
