Newcomer / Intro Best Keyboard Controls? with mouse

Hello all.

I'm new and bought the game on the sale that is going on right now.

I have just a basic mouse(left, right and wheel) and basic keyboard. I noticed that I don't have a roll, so with most space games, they use Q, and E. for the roll. but that messed up thrust up and down, so I moved them to I and K. And thrust left and thrust right, to J and L.

I also messed up other commands.

Any advice for better controls?

The default for roll is left and right mouse movement while pitch is up and down. This puts the basic movements in one hand and I would leave it at that.

I'd set everything back to default and then study the controls that are set up before changing anything.

Also you could have a look at the manual that lists all the default keys https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34437

I agree, start from scratch. Fly around and see if you like Mouse X-Axis doing roll.

Personally when I use keyboard and mouse, I make the following changes:

  1. Change default Mouse X-Axis to Yaw. This makes the mouse more like a desktop pointer.
  2. Remap Roll Left to 'A' and Roll Right to 'D'. By default 'A' and 'D' were Yaw, but since I mapped that to the mouse, I need roll somewhere.

Give both the default and mouse-X-yaw a try and see which way feels better to you.

I use:

WS -pitch up and down
AD - yaw side-to-side
QE - move left-right (without turning)
RF - Move up & down
Mouse left-right roll (turn on the pip marker to get a better idea of how much it's trying to roll
Throttle - Mousewheel

The main issue with using the mouse to Yaw is that Elite is deliberately made so that ships roll much faster than they yaw, to try and force combat towards 'WW2 dogfight' and away from 'click on the tiny spaceship to win'.
