Newcomer / Intro Best way to start playing after a long break?

Hi there, I originally played when Elite: Dangerous first launched, until just shortly after planetary landing/exploration were introduced to the game (I landed on a few planets but never ventured out). At this point I'm guessing it's been at least 5 years since I've played, so I'm looking for recommendations for the best way to get back up to speed, even if that means jumping back into a Sidewinder to not risk the Fed Dropship I had invested in right before I had stopped playing. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

The best way to my mind is to do all the tutorials/training from the menu option, not only will they reintroduce you to the game but because they are repeatable will let you reset/adjust/remember your control bindings.

Your old bindings are of course helplessly out of date as there have been a lot of changes in the time since landing was introduced just before I started so it is probably more like 7 years.

Once you've got most of your controls ironed out via tutorials, set a minor goal for yourself, and go for it. It won't take long to get everything working the same (or better) than before.

This worked well for me after a 2 year break. Now, I have too many goals :)

Welcome back.
As others have said it maybe good to redo the tutorials and also read some of the really good help threads on this forum.
Just a bit of advice, the bubble has got a little more dangerous in places, Thargoids generally now attack rather than just sniff and run so in the Galaxy Map make sure to check 'Thargoid War Information' (left hand side) it shows which systems to avoid when you are scooting around.

Steer well clear of those Thargoid systems too. I made the mistake of trying to take a straight trip out to Chloe's place for a blueprint pin. The path passed too close to Thargoid occupied space. That was my first ever hyperdiction, and it resulted in a buyback screen. My "paper airplane" DBX didn't stand a chance against two glaives.

I made the trip the second time by manually plotting the first half of the trip, then auto plotting the rest. It just took a couple more jumps, no big deal.

If you do not yet have it, get Odyssey. Lots more stuff to do on foot, and you can get away with a small or medium ship for most stuff.

Oooh thank you, I stopped playing before Thargoids started showing up so I have zero experience with them.

Thanks also to the people who recommended in-game training, I played through just one so far but those also didn't exist when I last played! 😅

Just keep in mind that some of those training scenarios are proper training and not supposed to be easy.

Do not feel bad. Only specific builds actually have a chance with two Glaives. You cannot escape into supercruise without ECMs (vital now for rescue missions). You cannot beat them with guardian weapons, only with AX multi's and after a hard fight. These things are meant to stir the AX fight and definitely succeded in this regard.
In an exploration ship only a logout might save you, but you have to be quick. And then go and fix your fsd booster, as Glaives degrade all guardian modules very fast. (90 seconds to 0%)

I learned something useful from the experience, so no bad feelings.

I've since discovered I can exit the game when the hyperdiction starts. Upon returning, I'll be in the system I jumped from.
(yes, I made the same mistake again recently)
