Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Yeah. But I'm willing to bet the base game source code has left room for enhancement. Just need to consider a complex mold like Skyrim's Civil War Overhaul. One of the best--if not the best--dynamic faction game mechanic overhaul mod produced by the PC modding community to date. All drama queen hysterics aside, the fact that a single modder (Apollo Down) was responsible for creating this sort of masterpiece ( v. Beth's entire dev team) is mind boggling.

To say designing a mod like CWO (on the scale of the universe v on one planet) is insanely ambitious would be a gross understatement.

But considering gifted geniuses the likes of Chesko (Frostfall/Campfire mod), the TES modder teams who designed Skyrim's Beyond Bruma series and Enderal, the SkyOblivion/Skywind teams, the Fallout franchise teams who made A Tale of Two Wastelands mod, the New California and lately Fallout London mods? Anything is possible.

There's a reason Bethesda proc gen those 100 star systems and their 990+ planets. They were designed to be a blank template for the PC modding community to lose its mind in......

The most risqué mod content in Morrowind was the prophylactics mod.

Skyrim's OSA/O_ _ _ mod suite makes that look like a hapless cherub Cupid

Another obvious feature I completely missed. I've been wondering if the Earth was habitable after we learned it was surrounded by a debris field (suggestively trash from poor environmental policy). Turns out Beth literally gave us that answer. It most definitely is! PC is currently located at the blue marker in A Centuri at the Constellation city HQ. This faction HQ settlement/city appears to be designated by the little facility looking icon above the planet from Galaxy view below. And if you look at our Sol home system, it also has the same facility icon above it!

View attachment 313442

So similar to ED, this icon system could be a great visual indicator when you jump into an unexplored or unclaimed star system. Because it would immediately tell you if the planet is already settled/terraformed/inhabited by humans.

What's not clear is which specific faction these human settlements/cities/towns/outposts are owned or operated by? Is this facility icon only limited to the 4 major faction city settlements (of which Beth has provided us with information on only 3 to date)? Or does it apply to all human based facilities in the galaxy? Or does it also include alien settlements/civilizations which Beth has been so tight lipped about (but teased in game concept art?).

Another thing is that SF doesn't appear to have the dynamically complex BGS ED excels at. So we don't know if it's even possible for factions/star systems to shift allegiances based on the shaky peace treaty between the UC & Free Colonist factions. But I'm hoping there is some weak form of dynamic game mechanic like this though. The galaxy map indicates A Centuri star system is owned by the UC where Constellation's HQ is based. So it seems the UC is on far better terms with Constellation than it is with Freestar.

If I end up RPing as Crimson Fleet merc, it would literally kick a donkey's rear end if your PC could exploit this shaky UC/Freestar Colonist relationship. Masquerade as a triple agent working as a Crimson Fleet spy (PC's real faction) working under guise of a legit Constellation explorer. Then go primal double agent against these two factions and undermine their strategic positions in star system sectors the Fleet needs to control. Find ways to sabotage and turn the UC and Freestar on each other at the more remote outposts as part of supporting RP sandbox game play..... 😍
Looking at that picture, the system names are written next to the star dot - and the facility icon, as you say, is above it.

Looks to me that the facility icon you’ve pointed out is for Narion, not Sol.

Good catch! I totally misinterpreted that. So we don't know what's going on on Earth. Seems Beth wants to keep dark on this until game release.

I'm really hoping visiting the earth will be worth while. That the earth isn't going to turn out like the planet sized version of the PC vault in FO4. The backstory on such a fundamental vault was a complete let down for lore & RP perspectives.

some 3 weeks later and now wondering how many billions in profit MS will be making off increased game pass monthly sub sales. From their exclusive XBXs flying off shelves to desperate PS gamers.

And since SF is clearly going to be MS store exclusive, then same potential calamity can befall us Steam/GOG/EGS/Origin PC gamers if MS limits PC DLC to their store come to think of it......

Microsoft gamepass ultimate cures all. I have it for Xbox live subs as well as the combined game library for PC and Xbox :)

Nothing to back it up, just a gut feeling but I don't think MS would pull such an anti-consumer move like that. They know they're gonna make a killing on paid mods from the Xbox & casual PC crowd, but the cream of the mods will come from their most devoted players who might not get into it if it's a pay only company grab.
I also doubt Tod would've mentioned mods if there was an asterisk next to it (he's still being slaughtered for the 16x the detail meme).

A quick check on Steam shows Starfield can already be wishlisted there:

A quick check on Steam shows Starfield can already be wishlisted there:

Yes. I know that as a Steam user. It's also on my Steam wishlist.

Just like I had The Outer Worlds, Metro Exodus and Rebel Galaxy Outlaw tagged for D-Day release. As promised by the devs/publisher of these highly anticipated titles.

Until these august devs & publishers decided to drink the poison Kool Aid from EGS's toilet. Got avarice punch drunk besotted and vaped themselves into the digital exosphere. Leaving EGS --that anastole on the gaming industry hemorrhoid that is the Exceptional Ahats--to reassure us non EGS gamers with breaking news: RGO was an EGS exclusive. And consequently, wouldn't be seeing the light of day on a Steam forum, until a min 365 Gregorian calendar days had elapsed.

To date, I remain very traumatized as a Steam gamer. It's best for my emotional recovery I refrain from buying any of these titles until the end of next century.

Yes. We Bethesda fan bois have a deeply neurotic, 28 year old sunk cost fallacy. For some fan bois, best analogy of the toxic relationship between the TES/Fallout fan base and Bethesda is the relationship between an abused wife and her significant other.

Other delicate fan bois like me who are bipolar narcissistic juveniles, it's a bit more psychologically complex. We suffer from an unique disassociate identity disorder and that particular circle of life visually looks like this

Please tell me that train is going to be a real thing on release day.....:D

TBH I wasn't trying to troll. I'm genuinely enthusiastic that they thought to include that silliest level of detail in the game. :geek:

And because I'm blind, it seems there are TWO trains in that pic. Which could imply more?!? 😍

And if true then we've got a potential subway line system like we did back in FO3. I could see them needing to add some form of public transport to the bigger cities like UC faction controlled New Atlantis. There are also unmentioned (but teased) MEGA city metropolises on mega satellites. Which appear to be associated with grav jumping (SF version of ED's FSD through witch space) technology. This phenomenon has a dedicated trait and entire associated religious cult called the Great Serpent. These satellite stations are Gaia size in scale based on the relative sizes of humans depicted walking on a solar array in the artwork.

Anyhow, I'm totally incapable of stopping myself obsessing over SF today for some reason. Been drowning in a spam of YT breakdowns of the trailer to the atomic level

That being said, I've finally decided what my background & 3 optional traits are going to be.

Background: Cyberunner. Clearly the fastest way to an early retirement working for Stellaris MegaCorp Ryujin Industries

Trait #1: Alien DNA (because ENDGAME based on the alien artifacts I'm spending the next 1,000 game hours finding).
Trait #2: Empath (really hope this is the Troi/Star Trek Next Generation or Tuvok/Deep Space Nine variety. Because alien civ is MQ endgame)
Trait #3: Kid Stuff (because my PC will likely end up marrying/being in a romantic relationship with a companion at some point. Would be nice to take them to meet Mom & Dad) :geek:

My PC is actually an alien but doesn't know his true identity as he was raised by loving human parents. But my PC always had an unquenchable space wonderlust. Something was calling him to join the stars. Once he was old enough to leave home, he decided to get rich working as a merc for Ryujin Industries. He was doing well financially working as a freelancer cyberunner.

Until the fateful day he got a space email from Constellation one fine space morning. After joining Constellation, he found his first alien artifact. And on interacting with it, became aware he was clearly different. Unknown to him, the strange encounter awakened his sleeper gene psionic empath abilities. He was fixiated by the strange, seductive siren song that was now calling him to explore the stars. Unwittingly driven by his alien DNA, his life was no longer about obtaining material wealth and profits working for trivial organizations. Finding the source of the song through those strange artifacts had become his lifetime goal.

Agonized over #3 and Neon Street Rat. Deal breaker on Street Rat is that it's a faction trait which excludes the other faction traits by default. Also seems likely the game will spawn you in Neon if you choose this. Howard did say your background determines where your PC starts the game. And fact you have other suggested faction starts like

Secular trait based faction starts:
  • Freestar Collective settler - Your basic Star Wars Tatoonine minus the desert like environment
  • UC native - Your basic SWKOTOR meets Mass Effect style metropolis city
  • Crimson Fleet Pirates - Your basic Fallout Gunner merc faction (possibly associated with Spaced trait? Seems like a good faction choice if they're based predominantly in space)
  • Ryujin Industries - Your basic Stellaris: MegaCorp ménage a trois with Fallout New Vegas and The Outer Worlds....
  • Spacers - Your basic Fallout Raiders guaranteed to be feral to the bone. Would be cool if we could get radiant missions from these from time to time if you side with the pirates
Religious faction starts
  • The Enlightened (Raised Enlightened trait) - Sounds like GTAO's Epsilon Program cult
  • Sanctum Universum (Raised Universal trait) - Remind me of RDR2's Chelonian cult for some reason....
  • The Great Serpent (Serpent's Embrace trait. These sound like your average batty Fallout Children of the Atom cultist types. Worship a Gaia like entity called the Great Serpent which appears to be associated with grav hyper jump technology (Starfield's version of ED's witch space hyper travel)
  • House of Var'ruun - battier than the snake disciples but insanely more violent. These nut job six cultists sound like they would make GTAO's Altruist cult look like choir boys...
Was also sorely tempted to go with one of these religions given how well Bethesda developed these factions in past Fallout games.

edit: Oh wow! I just made a possible brain fart connection to the Ryujin Industries faction. In Japanese, the word "Ryujin" refers to the guardian sea deity in Japanese Shintoism mythology. If this ends up being represented as a sea serpent (where the "sea" is now the void medium of space), then this could be the same Gaia deity mentioned in the Serpent's Embrace trait! So this trait could automatically give you a start with this MegaCorp styled faction....o_O
