Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Since Starfield is coming to Gamepass - and Bethesda is owned by Microsoft, does this means, it will be permanently on Gamepass, and won't be removed from it?

It'll be gamepass exclusive initially (PC and Xbox). For how long? No idea... but I'd expect a delay before the PS or external game platform versions (Steam/Epic etc) are on general release...strictly because of MS/Sony politics revolving around Sony's long standing PlayStation release exclusivity. Phil Spencer as head of Xbox and Gamepass simply said, "Two can play at that game, Sony."

Sony are folding slightly through it's recent policy of releasing some formerly exclusive titles onto Steam and Epic...but these are all for the most part at least 2 or 3 year old titles...as much as Sony now releasing them on PC is generally regarded as very welcome. All of those former exclusives have been very well received on Steam (for example) without exception...even by those of us who've played them previously on PlayStation.

Microsoft suggested making gamepass ultimate subscriptions available to PlayStation owners as an external games platform (like Steam)...but Sony shut that discussion down chosing to beef up their PlayStation Plus software instead. I have PS plus/PS Now for my PS4 pro as well as gamepass ultimate for Xbox and PC...Sony's offerings are nowhere near XBox live or gamepass standard...but Sony will be Sony. They even managed to wrangle PlayStation exclusive content for Hogwarts Legacy, not available on any other platform...not just cosmetics but additional game content as well 🤷‍♂️

What's more important now that Bethesda are (in effect) a Microsoft studio is what happens with the Elder Scrolls VI when it appears. An Xbox/PC exclusivity with that will cause a riot with the PS fans. That's not even mentioning what will happen if MS finally aquire Activison and the Call of Duty franchise...

As primarily a PC gamer, although I have an Xbox and PlayStation as well...the persistent console exclusivity war between Sony and Microsoft denying access to certain game titles are nothing but frustrating. I don't really care which piece of expensive plastic I play games on...but I'd much rather games as a form of entertainment were universally available on day one across all platforms.

Are you including macOS there? ;)

I'd include macOS in there as well...even though I've never owned a Mac...but only because of what @Ozric hinted at, the Mac has never really been a serious gaming platform...or at least it was never well enough supported by Apple for it to become one in it's own right. A serious bit of kit with an intuitive and well designed OS, but sadly, not one for dedicated gamers. No disrespect to you or anyone else who uses a Mac for any reason (I put Linux in the same bracket)...but I'm a gamer, besides faffing around on forums, it's kinda what I do 🤷‍♂️

It's always fun to gee up some folks cos you know you'll get a reaction :)

The serious point is that Microsoft, after nearly dropping the ball on internet integration, has a virtual monopoly on desktop OS, a virtual monopoly on business software and is now buying its way to a virtual monopoly on AAA gaming. Not good in the long run I think.

Depends on whether you're a gamer or a business analyst I suppose ;)

I meant the modded versions. Modded version of Dog was a cute (but deadly) husky skin borrowed from the DG DLC and optimized in 4k UHD. Same for Lydia except she had a MASSIVE overhaul in her AI. Until I ran across one of the best Serena mods on Nexusmods. Which, besides an amazing UHD skin overhaul, raptured Serena's vamp & magicka capabilities to near immortal god mode level.

Well, modded isn't Bethesda content. We can only judge and compare what comes out of the box because that's the uniform experience.

Well, that's why i'm not really in the modding and i'm absolutely not thrilled about mods, which - most often than not - look like actual cheats and/or exploits
They simply distort the intended game design and the vision of the developer.

Hence i usually prefer to play the dev's version of the game and skip mods completely.

So does this mean I'll need to log in using my XBox account to play Starfield? On PC, that is. I sure hope not, being an offline game. It annoys me enough already that I'm forced to do this to play MSFS2020 (which I actually haven't done in a long time now), but I believe that requirement is because the new flight sim uses Azure cloud for scenery.

Yup, exactly the same as MFS2020. All the games on gamepass are basically via the Xbox/MS account sign in palaver.

If at any point it will require a M$ account then I'll be giving Starfield (and any new Elder Scroll game) a hard pass.
I'm sure Starfield will appear on Steam, Epic or GOG eventually so no worries on that score. I'm not particularly fussed since I already have gamepass ultimate for the Xbox live subs as well as PC. It's no different to signing in to my Steam account to play games 🤷‍♂️

Even if I buy it on Steam? Granted, I bought MSFS2020 on Steam, but it's an online game, whereas Starfield is an offline game.

It's stuff like this that makes me very wary of Microsoft buying up all AAA gaming companies. Sony doesn't make me sign in using my PSN to play their titles that finally are coming to PC!

Since I won't tolerate any 3rd party clients or DRM outside of multiplayer titles, the odds of me playing Starfield any time soon are quite slim.

I do not ever plan on having a Microsoft, Steam, Epic, Origin, or Ubisoft Connect account.

Doesnt mean much - Ubi games need Ubi account still. ED need FD account. etc
