Big grid and small grid

So i was working on a pirate fortress with different grids. But all of sudden had a smaller grid on one of my buildings. Not sure how to explain this. But i could place a wall for instance, and then place another wall over it with the half over the other wall and the other half extending the wall. So i could make 1,5 walls. The problem is, i have no idea how i got this smaller grid, can anyone help me? I'd like too have that all that time.

to everybody on the search for the "smal building grid". You can find the "Sandstone Curved Column" in the category "Walls"
and just place it like oli414 said to access the smaller building grid.
