"Blockade" of Dav's Hope

There has always been a need for out-of-game or third-party information to do things in the most efficient way.

It used to some in the mail along with letters, which were white rectangles made from trees that people used to scribble on with ink sticks.

In any sandboxy style environment, there should not be any single 'most efficient way'.

Also, Earthworm Jim is really a psurlon.

The presence of another player can only ever be a disadvantage; at minimum you will have to share materials and scans with someone else.

Unless they don't need them and can provide cover and backup.

I've often found safety in numbers more than advantageous enough to overcome any resource contention issues.

There is always a most efficient way to do anything. That's what speed runs and monday.com are all about.

There is not always a single most efficient way to accomplish any or every given goal, and speed run analogies only really apply to very narrow and linear ones.

What's the single most efficient way to enjoy playing Elite: Dangerous?

What's the fastest you've seen Elite: Dangerous speed run to 100% completion, including all possible permutations of PvP encounters and abstract BGS goals?

There is probably a most efficient way to extract materials from Dav's Hope. However, the game, which could do a lot more in this regard, already makes touching Dav's Hope or any given site, far from clearly the most efficient way to acquire materials, even on a pure material vs. time basis. If you start introducing other considerations, the number of credible 'most efficient' paths balloons exponentially.

Some locations, like Dav's and Guardian sites, are IMO designed for Solo play. The presence of another player can only ever be a disadvantage; at minimum you will have to share materials and scans with someone else. The only reason to go in Open is if you want the added excitement of trying to beat a "blockade".

Can't agree with this, it's exactly opposite ... during my first visit at guardian site (month or two after they were known) I met there player which helped me (he showed) understand how these sites works. Yes, I know there are youtube videos "How to", but I didn't wanted spoil my fun with that. It was amazing experience, fun and totally unexpected situation. People usually speak here at forums about Open as a place where bad things happens, but irony is that in Open is possible mostly expect neutral or positive outcome (except places like Shinrata :) ...). Another experience at guardian site shows image below ... I was in SRV there and unknown cmdr offered me such views ...

There is a most efficient path to unlocking engineers (sequencing), to making big money (core mining → high volume stripping), to Guardian modules (locations and site walkthroughs), to grinding navy ranks and unlocking systems with permits. Sure, there's no "most efficient way" to enjoy PvP or exploration for example, but that doesn't mean there isn't a most efficient route to reaching a place where you can sit back and enjoy those things.

People will always look for ways to make the most of their time when they're online, and that means completing tasks in efficient ways so that more and more of the sandbox opens up to them. I don't really see what the problem is.

True, and perhaps "efficient" wasn't the best choice of wording there. But the vast majority of games weren't online in 1994 either. Their content didn't change, and anything that wasn't explicit in the interface or the manual (another archaic medium made from trees) needed to be stumbled upon via accident or tenacity. That's still true for a lot of ED's content, and if the game offered players more pointers during normal gameplay the reliance on how-to guides might not be as prevalent. They'd still be popular, because some players will always want shortcuts or time savers, but they might not be the first port of call for new players struggling to get a grip on the game's complexities.

I agree there should be much better information in- game. I think the Codex doesn't really fulfill its purpose so far. But I just tell myself that the internet accessed by Alt-Tab is an interface to my ship's data banks.

The worst thing about Dav's Hope is that players are going there based on old threads they've googled up for manufactured material farms that are no longer accurate since material traders were added. They used to be the best way to get things like polymer capacitors, but now? Just hit up a war system and hit HGEs until you find some military supercaps.

And like others have said, if you're going to be relogging at a site over and over, why bother popping into open for any of them? Just bounce between solo and private.

Open has the potential for everything the game mechanically allows . This can be both positive, negative or neutral depending on what you are looking for.
For me after an initial 6 months or so I decided it was not for me and instead use a tailored PG. What ever floats your boat. The only wrong decision is one where you are in a mode and something happens you do not want to experience.

Would just say that you don't have any right not to be attacked in open.

You can call it a moral or ethical failure on your attacker's part if you want but it's entirely part of the game.

On logging for materials being lame, again that's the game Frontier built.

Oddly I've seen some streamers refusing to do the log on/off at Dav's and actually fly into supercruise and back down since that also respawns, presumably because that's somehow more realistic.

Based on what you said though there was provocation, at least from his perspective. Material gathering at Dav's Hope provoked him. Sorry but we can't have a situation where people call other players out because they aren't role-playing the same campaign.

That's a very poor argument and makes very little sense. Material gathering at Dav's Hope is a normal, non-intrusing and non-aggressive occurance. It harms no player and every player is free to use it for his or her own (engineering) purposes.

nosleepdemon commented on why I allowed myself to get destroyed by the same person three times? A valid question. You could blame it on me being naive and having a bit of a faith in humanity, hoping he has had enough and would just leave me be. Obviously there are people out there with issues and frustrations that they believe are best to be 'treated' via in-game harrasment of other players i.e. howering over the same spot for hours and attacking other ships.

The player in question appears to fall under that category. I mean, if I was in an armed Anaconda, I could to some extent understand this behaviour i.e. the challenge that I would present to him. But attacking a basically defensless ship is just lame and a d*ck move, regardless how you try to justify it.

And now, because of these people, I have to go Solo in order to be able to play normally? Well, I guess that's the reality I will have no other choice but to accept.

Regardless of there being griever's or not; Gathering mats in solo at such site as Dav's Hope in open is asinine. Because if someone else has gathered them first. One must reboot back and in the process hope no one is there, or they risk having another gather them; Which means one has to reboot again. Thus gathering in solo is considerably much more proficient than doing it in open.
