On behalf of all a holes world wide, I take offence at this.
We a holes serve an important function. Without an a hole, everything would back up and things stop working.
If you get rid of a holes, then the whole system would stop working. After all, we get rid of sh..... stuff not wanted.
People who make open a worse place are not a holes, as they do not serve a purpose.
They are people who are into self-gratification, they only please themselves and no one else.....

Heres another way of looking at it with a real life comparison. If someone spoke to me like an a hole in a game, I get to ignore them...they do it in real life and I get to not ignore them at all and one has alternative options like get them scraping their teeth off the ground.

You know what the difference is between assault in real life and assault in a video game?
One isn't actually real and is encouraged by game mechanics.
A civilized person would not need to commit violence just because someone is rude, and would find themselves on the wrong end of the law if they struck the first blow.

What makes ye think I care about the law? I care about it in a game and follow the rules more or less...in real life much less so. Ye don't need to know specifics only that you an I have very different ideals and morals...where I'm from and where yer from would be very different places I'm assuming ^
Besides...how is being an a hole encouraged in game? I wasn't aware it was any more than a personal choice...learn something new every day hmm?
I never said being an a hole was encourage, I said ingame assault was, whether for cargo, PP rivalry, CG opposition, lore opposition, etc.
Assault ingame isn't the same thing as assault out of game, for one thing it's completely irrelevant and inconsequential, this is a hobby where no one is harmed by a fake ship blowing up. If someone is rude and harassing you report them and they will be dealt with for violating TOS. But out of game assault is a much more morally and legally repugnant action. If you can't see the difference you need to take a break from the game and the forum, it's unhealthy to let the lines between the fictional and the real world blur like that.
(And no I don't care what your biography is, on the internet anonymous people tend to lie or exaggerate about their real life so all stories must be assumed to be fake.)

My point of contention with your comment isn't the block issue anymore, it's equating ingame violence to real world violence. It's a stupid thing to say, moreso when you stated that you are not joking. Compared to that a debate on the faults of a video game mechanic is meaningless.
Also I never talk about my personal life, so I don't know what you reference with 'including yer own'.
It's not healthy to equate fake violence with real world assault, what you put up with ingame and in the real world should never be comparable. I'm being completely serious in that you should evaluate just how different fictional violence and real world violence is from each other, they are not in the same category.
When your Warthog goes all wonky with lopsided stick position and force, you will figure it out , just like the other 700+ people around the world have.

Equating does not mean the same as comparing in hypothetical situations. Im not equating anything in real life to whatever happens in a video game, Im giving an example of a hypothetical situation and comparing the two attitudes. I dont tolerate that in real life and see no reason why I should tolerate it in a video game. It is vexing in both worlds ergo I do not tolerate it in either. Thats what the block function does...removes the players I just cba with like a primitive human filter.
By all means, keep mistaking one fer the other but yer really just grasping at straws here. I see playing games as my escape from toxic people and yet here you are arguoing I shouldnt have that ability to remove them entirely. Ye see how ridiculous that point of view looks like from my perspective?

I say that it's fine the way it is because it is a two way street. A griefer can block all of the good guys out to stop him as easily as anyone else can block the griefer. The only real victims are the new players that haven't aren't aware of this feature.
Shower thought: what if FDev introduced an option to toggle on / off your block list?
Then players with extensive block lists of every PvPer / Griefer / Pirate / whatever, can toggle their block list On, and effectively have "PvE Open "/ "Carebear Open" / "Mobius Open".
Or toggle their Block list Off, and have "PvP Open" / "Dangerous Open" / "proper Open", Open mode.
So when a CMDR boots up they can decide what they'd like to play that session. Unfortunately without a toggle Block on / off you can't make this choice.
But that would certainly make a block list more useful.

Strange though as i had never come across the player before and if it was from a block then it must have been as i approached him or during interdiction. It could just be networking though im not at all sure.
Edit .. i think FD need to be a bit more clearer with how the block feature works and its ontended purpose, if it is the case then the cuthroat galaxy where anything can happen is just that bit less cutthroat. It was at a bounty hunting CG , i am no griefer and had never had any contact with the player before so any use of blocking in my eyes is an exploit to avoid interaction with others which to me defeats the purpose of open. If you dont want interaction then why goto a CG in open? Strange times we live in indeed.

I've been interdicted by players several times recently, and upon submitting have found myself alone in the instance. Twice last night at the CG, twice last week, similar circumstances
Thats making me ever hopeful that it was just down to simple netwrking issues and not just arbitrary blocking.
I really don't understand what all the concern is by a handful of players in this thread over players blocking other players. Are you already being effected by the lack of victims to harass and blow up for no reason? Would a more expansive blocking ability make your OPEN games even more devoid of players willing to be in the same instance with you?

I thought so, too, but I've heard enough worrisome talk about how blocking screws up instancing in unforeseen ways that I can't rule it out. Ultimately I don't care if someone doesn't want to play with me, but I do care plenty if by abusing the blocking feature people are messing up my ability to play with the people who DO want to be in the same instance with me.
Ultimately I'm giving Fdev a C- for this feature. I'd sure like it if they'd instead spend time on developing fun mechanics to the actual game.
People keep quoting the "cutthroat galaxy" stuff. What about the part in the same marketing material that says you can play along side others, your friends, or alone? People only see what they want to see. Put plainly, using marketing slogans to prop up an agenda is as useless as most RL comparisons, and all analogies you see posted.
