Blocking in Elite Dangerous

@Lateralus , were you flying Maximum Firepower? My "secret weapon" is Scrambled Spectrum (it lets me contribute something in a wing-v-wing fight), but it appears broken after the September update. I'm curious if you (or whoever was flying that ship) noticed any modules failing.

Just block and move on if someone is bothering you, either verbally or physically (by attacking you in game). The block feature exists the way it does to prevent that form of harassment.

Scramble spectrum is still working (at least on player ships - not sure about NPC's, as I don't use it myself).

Lets all just face the fact here that it's the same old story of many different playstyles being put alltogether - of course theres going to be disagreements....Mostly because everyone is right! Everyones opinion is valid within their own ideology...unfortunately, many Cmdrs = many ideologies....hmmmmm...
I tend to favor being Lawful (mostly 😜) but there are still many types of PvP - 1v1's or Wing - Lawful or Unlawful - pre-aranged or spontaneous - Engineered or Vanilla - Symetrical or...erm...Ganking 🤔 (Powerplay too maybe?)

I think its fair to say that its only a small number of PvPers that most Cmdrs actually have a problem with.
I for one HAVE to max my PvP ships out, and i constantly seem to be collecting mats (also i really am grateful for others who play in Open - it's hard to have emergent content with no other Cmdrs!)

erm....whats my point again....oh yeah -
This whole debate seems to get very Black & White to me - Good v Bad - PvP v NonPvP - i bet that if everyone posting in this thread sorted themselves into a Wing or two, the CG would be a much more interesting place and (dare i say) the Traders would get hassled less. Seriously we have a multi-crew "looking for" menu, maybe if FDev made 'looking for' a wing a bit easier, everyone could potentially get what they want from a CG?
I don't know - it seems to me, that if Gankers get some combat from 'willing participants'...then theres no need for anyone else to get block happy.

I don't want to loose Cmdrs to Solo, and i do enjoy a good CG from time to time. If FDev could just supply a little more structure, i'm sure there'd be something for every Cmdr in non-blocked Open 🤗

Plus the Hauler has the best engine noise in the game
I've actually fallen in love with the Hauler, a ship I totally skipped over on PS4. It's got a great cockpit, and with enhanced thrusters it's nippy! It also can take quite a pounding and survive - my shieldless Hauler survived three back-to-back interdictions and attacks from FDLs and still had over 50% hull.

The hard point sucks for gimbals or turrets, but I've poked some holes in the enemy with a rail gun, and missiles are a viable weapon. Obviously this ship is not meant for 1v1 with anyone, but it can contribute in a wing fight, and its real purpose* is to keep gankers focused on me instead of the serious traders coming through the system.

* I normally would not share this secret, but I think they are on to me since nobody interdicts me anymore. Heck, I could probably use it to actually haul cargo now and be totally left alone!

Oh, and dying in a Hauler over and over again is a great way to earn Arx. It's stupid, considering I get zero Arx for beating an interdiction or high-waking before being destroyed, but leave it to Frontier to reward failure more than success.

Now your talking my language!
I skipped the Hauler too....i've also been unlocking alot of the Class 1 Powerplay weapons i never got around to.....Idea's forming!!! 😜

I don't like the block function. It's messes up instancing. Instancing is fragile enough as it's is with wings and squadrons and what not, that overrides pure performance.
Blocking is worse though. It's a negative criteria. The others are at least positive.

That said, I fully understand where OP is coming from. Running the gauntlet in ED simply isn't fun. Doing it successfully usually means using twice the time to deliver half or a third of the cargo. That would be fine if it was entertaining. It isn't. It's just submit, boost, boost, enter SC, repeat. If things get hot, it's hi-wake and start over.
It's just dull.
Emergent gameplay fails to deliver entertainment to prepared traders.

I blame this on poor game design. FD should have gone a different route in outfitting and not allowed cargo capacity to be replaced with combat capability.

I don't block, but I wan't blame anyone for using the function. Mini-maxing is the name of the game on both sides of this fence.

Actually, alternative off the wall ships make for some of the most fun in the game, whether we're talking PvP or not. I noticed the further I got in my ED career the less I cared about effective ships and the more I just wanted to try out various memes.

Admit it: its fun making a Corvette or Cutter log on you when you are in a shieldless Sidewinder with non standard loadouts.

My current fave ship is the sidey it moves like a dream, as I backed at gamma I got the freagle so I skipped it entirely. Not the tankiest ship in the sky though.

Arrooo!

My dream ship is a Hauler on the inside (including sounds) but an Adder on the outside. When faced with the choice between the two, I finally ended up with the Hauler since I spend all my time INSIDE the ship, so I don't care if it looks boxy and kinda ugly on the outside - you all have to look at that, not me :p

And for reasons I cannot fathom, my Hauler seems tougher than my Adder even when my Adder has a higher HP number...
